Gaijatra is mainly celebrated in Kathmandu valley. In Bhaktapur, the Traditional Gai jatra is specially Celebrated and it continues for a week. The Tahamacha symbolize dead people and is decorated with their possessions and photograph. The chariot has a framework of bamboo which is wrapped with cotton cloth usually Hakupatasi (a black with red border traditional sari type female cloth) for women and simple sari type cloth for men. Many local musicians, and a cultural dance called Ghintang Ghisi follow in the wake of a chariot.. Men are also seen wearing women's dress: Hakupatasi (newari traditional black saree with red border). People dress up funnily. Children even dress up as Gods and join the parade. It is believed that the festival derives its name from the religious belief that the deceased, during their journey to heaven, crosses a legendary river by grabbing the tail of a cow. The Gaijatra observed in Bhaktapur is considered more special, entertaining and satiric compared to other cities.
People are playing ghintangisi with the melody of newari musical instruments in Gaijatra Bhaktapur. The Tahamachas are brought out from different toles of Bhaktapur. In the evening of the Gaijatra, the Tahamachas of Lakolachhen are brought which are guided by one large one that has the bamboo framework but is covered in straws. This is known as Bhailya Dya: (Bhairab) and is succeeded by Ajima (Bhadrakali) made at Khala (Ajima Dyo:Chhen). Children, youngest to oldest peoples are playing ghintangisi With the melody of ghintangisi of newari musical instrument in Gaijatra Bhaktapur ( gai jatra Bhaktapur ) . The Ghintang Ghisi dance is celebrated for almost a week, starting from the day of Gaijatra to Krishna Janmashtami. Festival of Nepal, Gaijatra Bhaktapur by Bhaktapur Travel Jatra.
