One of the toughest, most drought tolerant perennial flowers is Gaillardia grandiflora. This native comes in several cultivar varieties such as ‘Spin Top’, ‘Arizona Sun’, and my favorite, Gaillardia ‘Arizona Apricot.’ Gaillardia is a wildflower native to the US and these improved varieties perform well in poor dry and even sandy soils. We often see wild Gaillardia growing in sand dunes along our NC Coastline. It’s a tough drought tolerant plant and would be a great plant in a container or even a hell strip. Also an ideal plant for a vegetable garden as a companion plant for bringing in beneficial insects and pollinators. I grew Gaillardia ‘Arizona Apricot from seeds and it has performed very well for me in my zone 8A garden. This variety is hardy down to zone 4.
Good companion plants:
Salvia
Sedum
Smooth Asters
Rudbeckia
Rattlesnake Master
Shasta Daisies
Coneflowers
Liatris
Ornamental grasses like Muhly, Little Blue Stem, and Panicum Switchgrass
