Gain 40 Yards with the Correct Spin Loft

Grant Waite and Joseph Mayo show how the correct spin loft and spin loft orientation can help you gain significant distance off the tee. A low spin loft value will help you minimize back spin and aiming the spin loft up in the air will create a high launch. High launch and low spin are critical to maximize your potential distance.

IMO the average golfer hits down on the ball because they come over the top during transition which causes a steep and to the left swing path. It's pretty hard to hit up on the ball from this path.

Mr Waite had to really pull back on those drives to get his clubhead speed below 100. What is amazing is he tell him to swing at 95mp and he can do it within one or two mph. Amazing talent.

Information is amazing (40 yards more carry with essentially the same speed). That said, how does the everyday player increase the dynamic loft without increasing spin? Your suggestions for what to try? Thanks...

Great video! Any idea how far the ball would go with these same numbers but with a 110 mph clubhead speed?

I went for a fitting yesterday. I am having way to much spin because of my loft. I am hitting 6000 and 22 degrees of loft. Hitting up to much can kill you as much as hitting down. Everything was good on path and face, but my loft killed my drive and spun the ball horribly. I actually had 8000 rpm on one strike. I use to slice because of over the top. Trained my shoulders and body to shallow and come from in to out. My numbers were perfect there. Now I need to learn to keep shallow and decrease my angle. Better problem than slice.

I like the easy explanation of Angle of Attack. How can one practice the proper AoA on their home driving range?
@AlexSkinnerGuitars
@AlexSkinnerGuitars 6 лет назад
Without a launch monitor, like the trackman, you won't be able to have concrete data to look at when practice your AoA. Instead, you will have to assume your swing speed is staying roughly consistent and try to watch your ball flight. Pay attention to how high it goes, is it a flat trajectory or getting steep quick? You will have to do it the old fashion way and figure out the ideal trajectory for your given swing speed, and once you can consistently produce an ideal AoA you can figure out the exact loft driver you should be playing for this swing.

Great video and lesson. The question I would like to ask is with regards to irons. Using an iron, how should one aim his angle of attack for maximum distance? Thanks.
@Jeff-tj4tx
@Jeff-tj4tx 9 лет назад
for irons i've heard you want to have a zero angle of attack (even with the ground at impact) and a somewhat high dynamic loft by having enough foward shaft lean by having the hands at the left thigh at impact. this will minimize spin and maximize compression and distance. keep in mind that hitting the ball this way you will be bruising the grass in front of the ball but not taking a divot.
@AlexSkinnerGuitars
@AlexSkinnerGuitars 6 лет назад
So this is all good info, but does the "12 degree rule" apply to a swing speed that isn't roughly 95 mph? What if the swing speed is more around 115 mph? Would I still want roughly 12 degrees difference between my angle of attack and dynamic loft to produce an ideal spin rate?

this is not about fixes its about purely numbers because a fix is very individual, at least you get to understand the reason of your problems from a physical standpoint, biomechanics are the other end of the issue

What's missing here is rollout. Look at how the two balls roll out and the difference looks like about 10 yards. As with everything in golf there's a time and a place for every shot. Got a tight fairway to hit? Hit the low shot to keep the ball closer to the ground and let it roll forward. Wind at your back need a big tee shot? Hit it high and let it float. Into the wind? Hit it low and keep it out of the breeze to avoid ballooning it.

@tmo4330

Jeff OK Jeff i will give you that. I hit the ball very straight and have a swing speed avg 95 mph. Can only get 7-11 more mph by pushing it. They always tell me on the launch monitors, Oh you should be getting much more distance if only you had less backspin. It drives me nuts i hit it straight as an arrow and 210, 215, carry. Also i think many of the teaching gurus are overstating the distance a golfer can get.
@Jeff-tj4tx
@Jeff-tj4tx 7 лет назад
Here are 3 things you can try that might add more yard to your drives: 1. of course make sure you're hitting the sweet spot (if you're measuring your drives on a launch monitor, how's your smash factor? it should be over 1.45 and close to 1.5. 2. your launch angle might be too low. most weekend players launch too low resulting in shorter carry distances. 3. you might try using a softer compression ball, like a callaway supersoft or wilson duo. i swing at about 100 and am surprised how far those balls fly.
