Back in 1997, I gave birth to a very critically sick child. This battle continued for many years. In late 98 I became pregnant with my second child, at which time my partner decided he wasn't interested in being with a sick child. (Not that he was anyways) Pregnant, alone, at a hospital with a critically ill child was painful...but with me...I had a few Gaither VHS tapes (yes...VHS) and I listened to them....all the time. Leaning on the promises of many songs. Through prayer and music, God carried me through....NOW my son (the sick child) is a healthy mature adult living a strong independent life, and the child I bore during this time has given me 2 beautiful grandkids...But in all these years, not a day has gone by when I don't recall the nurture I received from God, while listening to this music. I may have been physically alone, but your music and God's presence was a true source of strength.
Mmmm so I suppose that means 20,000,0000 fellow Christians are wrong🤔. I think it is totally stupid to compare artists, and in this case it is from within the same circle of artists. What IS true is that Marks voice and interpretation is incredible as is Guys. I notice that Bill, the maestro, so organises the different line ups so as to get the best sound. But to categorically make statements is irrational and I will say again stupid.
I’ve heard so many different versions of this song from several different GVB lineups, and this is by far the best lineup they ever had, and best version of this song. Mark has such a beautiful voice and is perfect with his stylistic choices vocally, same for Guy. Both phenomenal vocalists. David is just on another planet, what a freak of nature. Boy was God generous with talent when He created David. You can tell that this line up sang together for such a long time just based on how they listen, blend, match their tone, intonation, phrasing, dynamics, style, everything is just spot on. I love this rendition especially for the solos which are so tasteful, and my favorite moment is they key change which in earlier versions had been missing something - David nailing that D flat cold really adds momentum and helps the song build towards the ending. Great musicianship all around. This is what worship should sound like - the quality and effort of hard work and talent that really brings glory to God.

What about this..: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wTyuT3WkrEE.html
Still true today, 2024. Best version of this song right here. The combination of all these voices did the song/composition justice, thus able to deliver the message of the song very, very well.
I just love it how David reaches inside and trumpets in all power at " and when time has surrendered and earth is no more i´ll still cling to that old rugged cross"
This is still my favorite four of the Gaithers groups. I could watch these videos all day and never tire of the spirit of worship that seems to emanate from their faces.
I agree. This is the best Gaither Vocal Band group ever. I've never been a big fan of Guy Penrod but he's absolutely fantastic when he sings this song.
Have played this version so many times over the last few years before I preach - saw another person saved yesterday - all glory to God! He hasn't left the UK yet and I don't believe He ever will. More Lord.
As a senior who is looking to be with the Lord soon, I have asked my kids to play this song by the GVB at my memorial service. I want everyone to know I am safely in the arms of Jesus because the time here was only a preparation to my life with my Lord. So much worship and faith recorded in the lyrics of this song. Praise God.
Wow! Guy Penrod has a special gift in his vocal talent from up above...it is evident, and you can feel it when he worships! I miss him with the vocal band!
One of my Wife and my Greatest joys was the GVB in the Iowa consert that we went to. She is with the Lord now and I know she is singing with the Homecoming group who are now in Heaven singing for The God the Father Lord Jesus Christ. I know it has to be a joyful time. I long to be there. Thank you GVB for your gift.
Mark Lowry has such a beautiful voice. The same for Guy Penrod and Michael Phelps. I love this four the most of the different variation. When I listen to these songs they really transport me from this world.
"I believe that the Christ who was slain on the cross, has the Power to change lives today, for He changes me completely. A new life is mine. That is why, by the cross, I will stand." That is my testimony for my life. And that is why I love my savior.
You can never beat Guy Penrod. The band was never the same without him When he left, they seemed to lose a lot of followers. Guy is on his own now and doing fabulous. He has new dvd's and cd's out. Mark Lowry is also on his own and doing great.
Oh my Lord. I have saved this in the "history" section of my computer and I listen to it several times a month.... Sometimes several times a day. Each time I cry uncontrollably and reflect on what the cross means to anyone who believes what Jesus said. Those of us who understand that although it was so long ago He was thinking of us. Of you and me. I don't know about how you handle that, but I know what I am and what I see my life being worth.... and I will never be worthy of Him dying for me. But I thank Him always for so much love and so much forgiveness and for valuing me. Blessed is His name.
What a beautiful testimony of faith and trust in Jesus you express through your comments. ! can never be worthy of His love and sacrifice for me, either. The good news is that we don't have to be; Jesus' blood paid the price for our atonement. What a marvelous gift of love.
I was without my computer for a time and when I got back to it I saw your comment. Glory to God. Jesus made my life worth something and gave me a home... a home.
When you think your life might not be worth much, just think of what you are worth to Jesus. He gave His life because He believes you are worth that sacrifice. Love you for who Jesus thinks you are. That's a lot!
Best Gaither Vocal Band line up EVER! Tenor - David Phelps (Best gospel Tenor EVER!) Lead - Guy Penrod (Most powerful Gospel 2nd Tenor) Baritone - Mark Lowry (Rich, full and strong baritone that completes this line up) Bass - Well, there is no GVB without Bill Gaither.
Bill, Mark, Guy and David --you are inspired by the Holy Spirit and you inspire us who are chained to the earth to soar and fly on the wings of your matchless singing and your deeply-sourced music. To hear you is to be refreshed and renewed in the path of our faith in Jesus. When I am very tired I turn to one of your songs and and experience a surge of energy and hope. It is just not the technicalities of your talents but your devotion which lifts me to where a Christian should be.God bless you
I have listened to this rendition this song for years now, before I preach & at my lowest points & the Lord always meets me - so thankful to God & the Gaither team for this ❤️
Praise God for the Gaithers!!!!!! This group has been a huge help in me finding Jesus and accepting Him as my Lord, Saviour, and my friend!!!!! God bless you Gaither Vocal Band!!!!!!!
I grew up on all these songs and as I get older in life I learn to appreciate them more. Thank YOU FATHER for the Gaither Vocal band songs it brings me back to my roots back home in Jamaica, whenever I hear these songs I can't hold back the tears. 😢😢😭😭🙏🙏👏👏
This is a great rendition by GVB of “the old rugged cross”! Mark, Guy and David all shine, individually on their solos and collectively with their powerful voices joined together towards the end of the hymn. Beautiful and expressive performance!! ❤❤❤❤
The prettiest and most anointed song ever! Touches my heart deep within. Something about that old rugged cross where Jesus gave His life for and me. How I love that old cross yes and I will cling to the old rugged cross and someday I will exchange it for my crown. Thank You for the Cross Lord....
Dylan I’ve heard many other versions of them singing this tune. Here, David nails it out of nowhere. It’s the best! Other versions he slides into it and it doesn’t sound as great, but still amazing. What’s sad is sometimes they have Wes try it, and it’s really out of his range... he comes in pitchy and really doesn’t have the support that David does. He really is a master tenor! And this is by far the best lineup & version of this tune!
Mark Lowry does well here, but when Michael English, Phelps, Mark and Bill did it in Australia........it was so powerful. TO each his own, God shall be praise either way.
David is great :) his range and control is amazing! I can't really explain why I like Wes better but I do like the blend better with Wes... Which makes the current group great: Wes AND David :P
this is so beautiful. i love this group the best of all. antonio if listen to this song and all you can comment on is davids lewlery maybe you are listening for the wrong reason .
