I attempted to write down my thoughts on Galactic Civilizations 2. In this video, I shall read them out to you (even when I don't even understand what I wrote) and we shall learn the secrets behind why I liked the game. As a bonus, I will obsess over the difficulty options because I am trying to find a way to divine the quality of a game using some meta-magic. I am really happy you liked Gal Civ 2, i can give you more underated gems if you want. But if you want to tear down a game for bad design and UI Gal Civ 3 its a good target, it made soo many mistakes.

So, Galactic Civilizations II is kind of weird, because they had this idea of giving everyone unique tech trees in the last expansion, and it basically broke the AI, because it can't really handle how unique that makes everything. Before that, the AI had a reputation for being smart to a cutthroat degree, which is really the opposite way the 4X genre ended up developing, where AI personality tends to matter more than victory, so the game is kind of an evolutionary dead-end. I do recommend playing Galactic Civilizations I though: the AI there is *still* better than most strategy games even 20 years later, and the more backwards style has looped right around to unique gameplay.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the mostly neutral morality in the game. I laughed out loud when you casually commented about gassing an entire planet as part of the status quo during the gameplay.

I do appreciated the particular hingedness of this review - that is, it is somewhat unhinged so as to avoid being trite or boring, but not so unhinged as to lose value or meaning as a critical work.
