You wouldn't let them retreat. You would harry and pursue them, disabling ships to capture as many as possible. Every ship you leave today is one you fight tomorrow.
Asteroides near Earth? Wtf… And What a bunch of cra.. there are 20.000-100.000 km or more between Those rocks in space. And The empires ships Cant get between then?? 🤦♂️🤦♀️🤦
Ok, so the technology of humans is still just slightly more than our current space travel capabilities. Here are the issues with that. 1. Somehow, humans flew to an asteroid field to truly dismantle their enemy??? How???? It is currently estimated that It would take 18 months to several years to get to the asteroid belt. And I’m basing this on the way the technology in this story of humans is assumed to be, which is the current level we have today. 2. While maybe from the outside, the asteroid belt may look like it's very dense. In truth, there are millions of miles between asteroids in the asteroid belt in Our solar system. So there is no way the fight would have worked out that way. Might have been far more feasible if somehow the battle was fought in the rings of a planet. And that is just as dumb in the end, just in the opposite direction of the spectrum. I know there are other issues, but I wanted to focus more on this aspect. It really shows how these people who write these things do no research and have a very clear lack of understanding of their own world and local Solar System. They tend to think what is shown in movies is how it actually is.
The density of the asteroid belt was a common thing since early sci-fi. It carried over to film. Think of the Millennium Falcon, hiding from the Empire in an asteroid field. I've yet to see a movie or a book solidly grounded in science. Remember, fiction has to entertain. Even documentaries (supposedly all facts) have some less-than 100% factual bits included to entertain the audience, be it readers or watchers. You leave out some of the boring bits and add some bits to keep the story moving.

But since this is earth and how they described our technology and the battle happened near earth too.. makes no sence for an asteroid belt to be anywhere near nor accessable for the ships to make it there. The way they described the earth ships. We are hardly able to reach the moon on a regular basis. Then there is getting that many ships up there with pilots.
