Galaxie 500 playing "When will you come Home" under a basketball hoop in a school gym (Boston, 21 April 1989) just before they found success. It reminds you how short their time was - school gym one day - thousands of punters a few weeks later - then it all ended. God I love them.

Whoa, I was there! That was at my tiny high school of 112 students in our gym that also doubled as a cafeteria. There were only like 40 or 50 kids there... my friend's older brother who was friends with them set it up, and got the school to pay them like a hundred bucks or something. My friend and I were one of the only kids in the room who had heard of them and knew their music; we were standing dancing in the back while everyone else sat on fold up chairs.

these guys could build a few chords into an amazing thing of a solo jam. I wish they made more music than they did back in the 80s and 90s. but the re-releases of Today and On Fire have really special unreleased stuff worth buying.

What I love is how Damon and Naomi, no matter where Dean goes, glide along sedately and beautifully, like Maureen Tucker split into a bassist and drummer. :)

This footage is quite possibly my faveourite thing on RU-vid....beautiful song and such an intimate performance. Saw Dean Wareham play a bit ago and it was great, but if I was honest, not a patch on this.....

Thanks so much for posting this! They are always in my top 5 bands of all-time. Naomi on her bass - the riffs - the lyrics - the memories. Pretty much brilliant music indeed.

I still remember when they appeared on MuchMusic (Canada's MTV) and had the misfortune to be interviewed by Erica Ehm, who was sometimes guilty of seeming doing little preparation. She asked if they were deeply influenced by the Velvet Underground, and the whole band pretended not to know who that was, and Erica seemed to believe them. This was just after Fourth of July was out, with Here She Comes Now on the B-side, for goodness sake! Who did they learn it from, if not the Velvets, Erica?

I miss the days when real musicians could afford to buy the gear that these guys are playing. Now you have to be a collector and drop thousands of dollars. I bet the Ampeg B-15 bass amp Naiomi's playing alone would go for two grand. She probably paid a few hundred bucks for it. What a great band, though...and playing in a gym. Crazy. And at the same time Poison was playing in some arena somewhere. Is there any justice in the world?
@dlawlis
@dlawlis 4 года назад
At the end you could hardly hear her bass. Today you can buy a fairly good sounding and LOUD bass amp for a fraction of the cost of a B-15, and you can get a high quality bass made overseas that is barely distinguishable from an American Fender for a few hundred bucks. Back then you still would have been paying a relatively decent amount of a change for something that rivals what you can have today for a lot less money. If anything, musicians have it a lot better today.

@kg2104 it's an 80's Gibson ES 335 Studio, which didn't have F-holes or fingerboard binding. He also had a late 70's MIJ Epiphone Riviera as a back up.

abortive, but eyeopening version of what will become one of my favourite 'ive had enough-lets slow down' records ever made. decomposing trees, strange and of course blue thunder..but my most memorable moment is hearing them cover ceremony by joy division- perhaps the best song j.d. wrote after shadowplay.

@@ireneadler4925 According to Damon Krukowski in his Reddit Ask Me Anything he never used Conan O'Brien's drums when he played in Galaxie 500. He DID borrow and practice with Conan's drums in the earlier 80's, before Galaxie 500 was formed.

@micheelvis Nobody gave Galaxie 500 their gear. They bought it. I'm glad that you believe in fate and magic and faires and wishes. But you know what? Wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which fills up first. Clearly you're way more special than everyone else because the universe has seen fit to bestow upon you crappy vintage equipment, which I'm sure you love and will argue is just as good as all the stuff I'm talking about. Play for 20 or 30 years and see how you feel then.
