I decided to go with the S23+. I think you have to ask yourself what your requirements are, with anything you buy really. On some level I do agree that the Ultra is worth the relatively small amount of extra money, but it my case, it's still money that I don't need to spend to get what I want out of a phone. I don't see myself using the S-pen. Like you said, the resolution difference is barely noticeable, if at all. 10x zoom is kind of a nice option but one I can live without. If you don't think you need any of the extra features that the Ultra offers, then why spend more? Don't fall for this car dealership mentality of getting upsold on features you don't need. MKBHD talked about a great example with iPad pricing and how Apple walks you up the price ladder with small little increments, each time convincing you to spend just a little more, until suddenly you've arrived at something way beyond what you originally intended to spend and probably don't actually need. I could afford the Ultra, and in this one isolated purchase, spending that extra money would not kill me. But think about a lifetime of making decisions like this (oh just a little bit more and I can get this), and it'll add up.
I got the s23 plus. I hear your points in the video, but there are several reasons to choose the s23 plus iver the ultra. 1. I don't like note line phones, I don't want a s pen, and the boxy form factor 2. The screen is too big for one hand usage. That's pretty much it 😂 but saying it's pointless to buy a s23 plus isn't valid imo. It's the perfect size and I don't like the small size of the s23. Yes the ultra is a better phone, but that doesn't make the plus useless. Yes the s23 plus is 200$ more (I would say it should 100 more), but a bigger screen, faster charger, more storage, and better battery life is worth it.
As someone currently holding a 21 ultra that doesn't care about having best camera or S pen and thinks 6.8 is slightly too big, the S23+ seems perfect. You still get the same processor and similar capability as the ultra with a $200 discount. Im definitely leaning towards the plus.
@@daprinceomar I just made the switch from the Blue Bubble Cult and got the S23+ through FirstNet... The only memory option they had for mine was 512! I had an iPhone 12 with 128, so its absurd how much more this phone has for the same price mine did.
I recently bought S23+ and it works pretty well. I really do not like that square edge brick. Apart from that zooming photos I really do not miss anything from S23+ truly. Guys please do not hesitate to purchase S23+ and you might feel same way like IPhone because it looks like same appearance rather than that big square box.
As I try to figure out which one I want to keep. I like the s23plus it fits in a hand MUCH Better and using your one hand to swipe much easier, battery seems great, the sound on movies is better than the ultra to me. Now the ultra zoom on picture taking is mind blowing, but when will I really care to use it.... once in awhile. And it has 12 ram vs 8 on the plus. But my plus seems great at 8. Do I really need the ultra? It does seem much heavier and wider than my note 8 that I had. According to my scale, my note 8 is 6.6 ounces, the s23plus is 7.0 and the ultra is 8.1 without a case added to it yet. I can feel the weight difference. Even swiping the unlock screen for your password is more effort on the ultra. I cant imagine how I am to run or work out in the gym with this huge ultra. I wish the camera was on the plus then itd be a done deal. But I think Imma have to over look the zoom and go with what makes more sense to my every day comfort and use. And that is the S23plus. I wanted to really like the ultra I do I guess, but its way too big. Period.
Yeah. I've 23+ and it's amazing. My bf got the ultra and was wanting to get me the same one, but I felt his without even a case and there is no way I'm taking on a heavy ass, square phone as my daily driver. Too uncomfortable. If they packed everything in the plus, that would have been amazing. I love the form on the plus much better.
I have a 20fe and am thinking about upgrading. What concerns me about the Ultra is size, weight, and, as you mentioned, feel of the phone. My fear is if I get the Ultra, I will be kicking myself for having spent 200 more for a phone that I can't fit in a pocket and I like carrying around less .
I just really wish they could put the awesomeness of the ultra into a package the size of the base S23. I have an S22 Ultra r/n and just pre-ordered the S23+ because I'm sick of how big this phone is. I am nervous that the size of the plus is going to annoy me too. But I wanted more features than the base, so here I am hoping that I didn't choose wrong
I've considered both of these phones, and the reason I'm leaning towards the s23 plus. I wouldn't really use the s pen and I'm not a fan of boxed screens. I will say I'm surprised battery life is that much better on the ultra. You'd think with the quad hd display on the ultra and the full hd on the s23 plus the battery life would be very similar. I do think most people obsess a bit too much on cameras. How often do people zoom in 30 times? Or actually use 8k? Obviously if you pay more you get a little more. For most regular average consumers, I think it's borderline laughable to say the s23 plus isn't worth it. I'm sure I'm not the only person that wouldn't use the s pen or even care about the slight difference in cameras. And $200 is alot of money to most people. By that logic, the s23 isn't relevant either because it's only $400 less than the ultra. Yet each phone will appeal to some price ranges or preference in design. On a side note, you said we are in December? It's late February bro lol 🤣
I got a $1000 discount through my Carrier that I didn't on the plus, that was an easy tipping point for me... I was borderline before that as the camera for birding is cool, but a couple hundred dollars cool?
I agree with everything you said. I'll never use the pen and I don't care about the difference in the camera. I'm still pissed customers pay $1K for a phone and don't get a new charger!
Great vid, very honest and unbiased. Money is not an issue if it's 20% more, I think most people will skip note line until they offer your choice of flat or curved display. Rather than making the s23+ they should make 23U with flat or curved display. And stop with the colour choices because people buy cases to cover the backs..
I think you hit the nail on the head when you said why the plus costs so much but doesn't have any of the extras that the utra delivers. I was leaning towards getting the plus even tho I love the ultra but it's just too big for me, so for now am gonna keep going with my s10 😅
I wanted to pick the S23 Plus or the Ultra in Green because it was the sweet spot for me, but they were out of stock in my local stores, so I ended up getting the regular S23 (256GB) in Green and it still gives all of the premium feel quality and flagship features, but only the difference is the display being smaller, less resolution because of the 1080p panel but is still a gorgeous display, battery is definitely noticeable from the S23 Ultra, but the S23 still gives me 6 or more hours of Screen time when doing moderate use with light gaming sessions at high graphics. The camera is still grear despite not having the 200mp camera. It still gives nice-looking photos in daylight with great focus and color. Ram and storage are adequate for this small device. Overall, even if you are picking the most basic S23 from the lineup, you are still getting a great device that comes with everything that you need for a flaghship device but in a smaller and confortable size.
i got the s23 and love it but I'm a light user. Why you didn't get the s23plus from some other store? I don't care about battery too much, I just love the size
The 200 dollar price difference between the s23 plus and the ultra isn't by accident. They are designed and priced in such a way that the buyer can justify spending "slightly more" for a considerably better phone.
It's funny because actually, the exact opposite is the true. There's very little reason to go ultra over plus. Especially outside of US. Here in Europe we don't have those magical too good to be true provider deals, and the prices are substantially different. In my country the plus costed me 1200€ and ultra starts at 1600€.
I think many people like S23+ design as it's better feel on holding it. While if you want a higher spec. and don't mind the hand feeling, go for the S23 Ultra
Gonna have to agree to disagree. The ultra is just way too big. Yes it's not hugely different dimensions to the plus on paper but it feels so much larger in the hand. The S23 Ultra is also pretty heavy. Honestly I'd prefer to get the base S23 model if it weren't for the smaller battery and slower charging.
I think your review is somewhat true in your region but leaning towards influence. People from all over the world will be watching this. And in the uk, they do a 512gb s23+ for £1149 and the ultra here tops out at 512gb at a cost of £1399. So it's £350 more. Saying "just buy the ultra" doesn't take Into consideration everybody's use case and £350 more, is alot to fork out for the ultra that is essentially "slightly" better. The s23+ is a beast in its own right and many would be happy to own it. I just received mine from a s20+ that didn't use the snapdragon so anyone in Europe is going to notice a massive upgrade from previous s phones. You just jumped in a said "buy the ultra" it's just better. Then layed out how similar they are 🤔. From what I can see, the ultra has a better camera and a "better" screen. Most users struggle to tell the difference after 350 pixels per square inch so that's negligible! The thing that put me off the ultra was it's size once in a case, it didnt feel right in my hand, it's sharp corners and curved display that I hated on my s20+! Screen protectors sit better on a flat panel. I had my s20+ and s23+ side by side playing the same demo the s20+ in quad HD and I struggled to tell the difference. If it was there is was placebo and wouldn't be noticed if you didn't have them side by side. Yes buy the ultra as it is the best phone, but not everyone wants a huge phone, and I think the plus is a very good comprise between the s20 and ultra. I have the same chip, same storage, same charging speeds, same cameras unless zooming in above 30× in a package that sits better in my hand on a day to day basis and is £350 cheaper. You sound more of an influencer than a reviewer. Because you just stated what's best without taking into account people's use case. It's like saying telling a family of 6, buy this ferrari, it looks better and its faster! Not exactly practical for that family though is it so its not better "for them". Best is what suits the consumer. Buy what's best for you peeps, don't let influencers spend it for you! Yes the ultra is better, but only if you are a hard-core phone enthusiast, the plus is still a beast and if you want the balance of size vs performance you can't go wrong and you won't be disappointed with either.
Exactly!!! Same case in France without the deal it's 219 Euro of difference with the deal it's 200 IF you take the same stockage for both phones (512GO). Also the comfort is important like i agree that the Ultra seems better but you need to ask yourself if you gonna use the SPen, the Zoom x100 and all the features for some people yes but for the others no.
Coming from the S20+, I got stuck trying to decide between the two for two weeks and ultimately chose the Ultra. I'm very happy with my choice and would choose the Ultra again.
I currently have the S23 Ultra and at the time of ordering I was wondering if I should get the 23+ or Ultra. In the end, I am regretting getting the Ultra because as a low-medium user, I just don't need the specs of the Ultra. I've had the S22 Ultra and didn't use all those high tech camera functions and I barely used the S pen. The only reason I purchased the S23 Ultra is because on the off chance I had to sign documents, the s pen makes it much easier and I preferred a curved screen to a flat screen. However, the size and weight was very uncomfortable in my hand and I didn't like the boxy feel of it. I spent the $200 more because of the extra functions because other RU-vidrs say it makes more sense, but I don't really use them and I'm now wondering why I have the highest spec phone when all I need are clear photos (not 10x or more zoomed) and a non-laggy phone.
Don't like phones with curved screens or box shaped. Don't like scratches on my screen and screen protectors for the ultra are either plastic or difficult to put on and expensive. Not a no brainer for everyone I guess
THANK YOU SO MUCH for clarifying your opinion right off the bat instead of milking the viewer's curiosity to keep them glued to your video until the very end. Deserved a whole watch-through of your video and an instant Subscriber! Much appreciated.
We have both the S23+ AND Ultra and the ULTRA FEELS LIGHTER WEIGHT!!!😯 It is DEFINITELY SLIMMER and easier to hold in your hand. I chose the S23+ BECAUSE I believed it to feel smaller BUT when the phones came (they were shipped; we pre-ordered) the S23+ was heavier/bulkier. Go figure. 🙄 I am going to pay to switch to the Ultra. 😭😭😭😭😭
I bought the Ultra this weekend and was debating on returning it for the flat screen S23+. Then I looked at the price and the price difference. You hit the nail on the head with the rant, it just pushed me to realize that I made the correct decision.
S23 ultra is the best decision this year. At least people around you can spot the difference and tell it's an ultra just by looking at the camera array unlike plus which feels like A54😂😂. At this point I feel bad for people who bought s23+
Plus has flat screen. Awesome por protection. Plus has better performance in battery. Several videos on YT prove that. Plus fits better in hand. Ultra is just too big (and Im 6"2). Plus has curved borders for better handling. Camera is better on Ultra, yes, but only for very specific circunstances. The Ultra has pen, yes, but honestly, who cares? I dont. (I know some people like that thing) Ultra is just not enough for the extra 200 dollars. Funny that this video convinced me to buy the Plus. 😅 Thanks.
Im a photographer. Love taking photos. But because of that, i already have alot of camera equipment so camera quality wont sway me. Im more interested in the pen lol.
I find it funny how you keep emphatically repeating that the Ultra is the phone to get. And I completely agree with you when looking at both phones specs. Only I read in the reviews that 80% of people still go for the S23 plus. The S23 ultra may be better in specs, but the S23 plus feels much better in the hand and pocket. I've had the S22 Ultra and I really couldn't work with it on my job. That thing in my pocket definitely got in the way of moving my legs. I'm also going for the S23 plus this time. I'm sorry dude lol..
To keep it simple. I'm on the S21U. If I was upgrading I would go to S23+ over the Ultra. I would slightly miss the periscope zoom. However, much prefer the smaller flatter screen design. That wins out for me over the additional features on offer!
Same situation as you, I went for the plus. Ultra was a bit too big for me so I wanted to downsize, had no interest in the pen. I like the plus so far, not a huge size difference, but I do miss the moon shots the ultra can take.
@James Tait the s23+ isn't a bad phone, but it's just not worth it for the price. It's too overpriced it should've costed $799 in the first place, and even if you can get the plus on $749 right now, u can get the ultra on sale for $949, the $200 gap is too small and the difference between plus and ultra is huge for a $200 difference, the plus should've been the ultra minus the spen minus the curve display with rounded corner minus the 6.8" minus WQHD+ maybe but they should've kept the top notch camera and pretty much everything the ultra has they dumbed it down a bit too much I'd say the s23 ultra is $300-$400 better than the plus because I agree that the s23 ultra justifies the extra $300 cost over the pixel 7 pro and I also agree that pixel 7 pro is a better phone than the s23+ while still being cheaper
@Shan_Shah the difference between the plus and ultra is 3 features. You can still get more than enough memory and ram for the price. It's a more than capable phone so the difference in performance or ability isn't all that noticeable.
the reason why im getting the plus is because the ultra 256gb storage comes only with 8gb ram and not 12gb ram, if i want to get 12 gb ram i need to pay almost 400$ extra for the 512 gb storage which is not ideal, if the 256 had 12 gb ram I'd go for it and i kinda missed pre order deal by a day or so rip
Samsung has been quietly scamming us with ram and base storage for years but nobody calls them out on RU-vid. The freaking note 10 plus came with 12gb/256 base !...the s20 plus had 2k display , 12gb ram base !...I still got the plus as I was sick of the curved display but the plus or ultra shouldn't be coming with 8gb in any configuration for the prices they're asking
I went for the S23+ because it looks and feels like a phone rather than a giant brick. I nearly went for the smaller S23 until I discovered you can play Morrowind on phones now. If there was just one in the middle at 6.3" I'd be even happier.
The FE phones aren't really good. My cousin bought the 21FE and has been regretting it. It's better to shell the extra and get the regular 21 inside. 6.3" would be the perfect screen size.

I was at the Samsung store earlier today stayed there for 1 hour deciding if I should get the S23 Plus or Ultra. I was leaning towards the Plus to save a few $$. Because I liked how the Ultra looks like, and its pretty much the better phone, I just went for it. On my way home I was still contemplating if I made the right decision or not so I YT S23 Ultra and S23 Plus and came across this vid. I'm glad I found this channel and pretty much has solidify my decision. Thanks Heaps. Setting up my S23 Ultra now and oh man it looks gorgeous.
My s8n is a dinosaur but it's like a time x. It's in excellent condition still. But the camera is not what I want now. So upgrading after 7 year's is a hard choice for me.this video help's. 👍
I have been forcing myself to use the note phone additions of Samsung from 2012 till now with the ultra. For about 10 years I can tell you that I probably found myself using the stylus pen once a month. Unless you regularly sign electronic documents or like playing RPG map games on your phone... Don't get the phone. I'm now happier with my Samsung plus 23 edition. And it all boils down to the phone case and the screen protector.. I can't tell you how many times I've had issues buying screen protectors and phone cases because of the curved screen. And I just realized that by dropping my phone or having small incidents with a cracked screen it has been all attached to the curved edges. You may be able to provide your ultra phone with more protection if you're to get a waterproof built in screen protector phone case.. but all of these designs make the phone so much more bulkier than it is. So do yourself a favor and if you don't mind dialing down on camera quality or screen resolution just resort to a plus because the more conservative design is going to provide your phone with a lot more protection in the long run.
It's simple, get whatever phone makes you happy and what ever fits you and your personality (like a gf or marriage) The s23 puts a smile on my face, every time I touch it. It's a living breathable thing. I just love the shape and size. Because it's the S range, it's powerful enough. Battery is a trickly one though and something to consider, I don't use my phone much or to game. If you do then maybe the other 2 is better. If there is a shape of the phone you like better, then go for that shape. I love flat screen and curve edges, if out of the ultra or the plus, I would choose the plus, just based on the shape. There is no right or wrong answer, do what makes you happy. I wouldn't move to the A range because it doesn't seem powerful enough. 3 years later, it might run too slow
I went for the s23 plus 256 gb version today since it is the right size for me and has good battery life. ultra is too big for me and the price difference is big for me and i dont think i am missing out on the additional features of the ultra which i am not going to use.
I just ordered the plus. I really need to be able to hold the phone in one hand. And the curved display on my current s20 ultra is incredibly annying. I had to download an app in order to disable the touch function on the edges of the display because my hand were just touching and touching and touching.
The S23+ has 800mah difference over the regular S23. And 512gb of storage space option in the US. In terms of longevity the S23 Plus is the way to go, Samsung is gonna lengthen the software updates down the road. You'll be able to keep the S23 for 4-5 years and you'll be able to keep the S23 Plus for 6-7 years. Edit: Lithium batteries degrade overtime thus resulting in users either replacing the battery or just purchasing a new phone. Heat is the leading killer of lithium batteries especially in smaller phones. After years of usage the S23 will have more of a depleted battery than the S23 Plus with an advantage of a extra 800 mAH. So in the year 2027/2028 you'll have to upgrade your S23 while the S23 Plus can keep going for another year or 2.
Yeah, just traded in my beloved Note8. After Loyalty rewards and autopay ended up getting the Ultra for the same price I was paying. Great phone. Gives me that Note5 feel (my favorite phone ever).
I just want to make note of the fact Samsung has started making their lower end phones of the same tier (like the S line) to have lower resolution screens when this was not the case years back. The Note 4 in 2016 first had QHD display and when the S10 line came out, the S10 and S10 plus both got the QHD display. Now the smaller model gets FHD and I feel there is no reason they should be going backwards.
hello Mark, for me, just like you stated; its that round shape handle feeling of the Plus !! am I a professional photographer, no. the battery has always been my - final nail ! will it support my avage person use? ps , thank you for your honest review ! money? ok , it does make a difference; however, from a S21 plus user, for 2 years . she is great . take care . peace.
I went with the S23 plus because I don't like the curved display on the ultra. Camera on the plus is good enough for my needs but I do wish I had the battery performance of the ultra.
I just use both of them, and i choose s23+ for simple reasons explained down: 1. On s23+ more cold in same quest than s23 ultra 2. Curved screen on s23 ultra just destroy the screen protectors and hard to stay, Than s23+ were it s easy to apply and stay still. 3. The felling in hand, i like it more s23+ than s23ultra. 4. And the s23 ultra feels more fragile than s23+ That is my personal opinion.
I really don't get at what point Samsung decided that making curved display to a phone with a pen is a great idea? I had a Note3 loved it. Now i have Note8. Also appreciate it but the curves are driving me crazy. Can't use the pen properly because of them.
I was really only looking for as much of a direct replacement to my S20FE as I could find. It was a solid phone for the last 2.5 yrs and did everything I needed. Just the battery was getting pretty crappy. The S23+ is the same screen size, slightly bigger battery, double the storage, and a few other slight upgrades. Jumped on the samsung deal because normal trade in for the S20FE is $75. With the deal I walked out with a S23+ for $6/mo.
The ultra is plagued with wifi issues. A quick search will inform you. I wish I'd known before purchase. Maybe it'll be solved with a patch, maybe not. I had one and had to get rid of it due to the connectivity issues.
S23 Plus: has longer 8% battery thanks to smaller FHD display, weight 196gm & easier to hold.. plus it's cheaper S23 Ultra: 5 cemara setup, S Pen, Curved 1440p display, Weight 234gm & feels extra premium because it's heavy weight Fun Factor: S23 Ultra comes 12GB RAM - 256GB in most countries for $1200.. & that should be the standard.. 8GB phone for $1200 is just a bad buy.. even chinese mid range now comes with 12GB as standard (OnePlus 11R for example) & only cost $500 Am not comparing Samsung to chinese phones, but am comparing they should give 12GB as standard for anything $1000 & above
Owned both, the s23 plus has a better battery life for me, and also, I hated the curved screen and boxy feel Ofc the s23 ultra has the pen and camera but I don't really miss them
i got the 512gb s23 ultra. i dont mind the boxy/squared look (the previous ones remind me too much of an iphone) i like the s pen to write notes etc. and the battery is important to me. the cameras are cool but i dont use it enough to find a difference but overall i got it for battery
Samsung needs to put premium specs in the plus like the ultra the ultra is a big phone i do not like big phones nor do i care for the s pen . The plus would be a perfect size just leave the regular s23 with sub par specs not the plus.
I've swapped from an S21 Ultra to the S23+ Hated the size on my ultra curved screens are horrible. The s23+ is just a better phone to use. My ultra also goes thermonuclear when charging. Spen never use. Camera is t really an issue for me I remember when 2mp was amazing 😂
I got the S23 Ultra 512 through my Carrier of many years with a $1000 credit, so basically $300 making it the cheapest and best value. But, it's the first new phone in nearly 5 years for me, upgrade from S8 Active. Honestly, if it wasn't for the Amazing upgrade on the Camera I may have just limped along with this one.
I have 23 plus.. size ok (fits ok in hands and poket), battery ok, speakers sound good, cameras ok! If i want pro photos, i use my sony camera! I had Note for a long time! They are too big and the stilus was useless for me!
The problem is that in Canada, the 23+ and the 23ultra 12g is a 600$ different . The 8g 23 ultra is 513$ tax in. The 12g is 789$ tax in. The 23+ is 193$ tax in. If I'm going ultra, I want the 12g of ram for that price. Why they even included an 8g option for the 23 ultra is crazy to me.
I just purchased the ultra and with trade in the price between the plus and the ultra was only $50 more. No way I couldn't justify not getting the ultra.
Good initial review. But after the hype and updates. The s23 + and the s23 are better buys. The cameras are great and actually the battery on the s23 plus is better. I'm fact the s23 battery life is better than the previous years s22 ultra battery life.
I got the 23+ because I hate how boxy the corners are on the ultra just for an extra 2% screen size. The curved edges make it easier to crack the screen and I wouldn't really use the S pen much. I've never needed to zoom in 30x so I'd rather save $200.
I've had my galaxy s20 note 5g for over 2 years now and I use the S-Pen once when I got the phone. It sure as hell gave me a heartattack when it would come out the phone by itself & I would have to run around to search for it hoping it didn't fall out the car at the store. Get the 23+!
I don't understand why the s plus's are the least purchased of the series. It seems to be the perfect choice for the average user. It could be that most of the reviewers push the Ultra. It's too big, too boxy, most people don't use or want an s pen, or are camera aficionados. I also didn't want another curved screen. I'm really enjoying my s23 plus! With the trade in discounts it is just the right price.
Let me help you with this. Going to get a S23 plus in a few days from a S9plus. About the ultra. Unless you really need or just want an s pen, It's stupid. I don't need any added weight or curved screen. Camera on the plus is as much or more than I need. About price, Everything is over priced, egges, gas, cars, you name it. So, there you have it. I'm a conservative tight ass.
Hi Mark. just little updates about prices in uk.The standard S23 handset will cost anything upwards of £849, the S23+ costs £1,049 and the largest S23 Ultra device starts at £1,249.
Went from S10+ to S22+. Now I was looking at the S23 Ultra. It would be free to stay with the S22+ but the charge port isn’t tight enough to get a good charge. Bumping phone stops the charging, and that is any cable.
It's over a $500 price difference from the plus to the ultra in CAD... so I went with the plus 512GB.... I do game a little on my phone and I don't take pictures that often or do crazy videos so I really don't care about the extra garbage on the Ultra... I disagree with you that the differences is that big of a deal between the two... I wouldn't get the standard S23 but the Plus is at a good price point for the added benefits, where as the differences between the Plus and the Ultra are negligible... 0.2" screen size, a stylus and a zoom that only matters at 30x zoom which is just ridiculous to begin with... like why are you zooming in 30x to take a photo? :/ like after taxes the Ultra is $2100 and the Plus is $1600... so a $500 difference for a couple extra bells. Not worth it.... Plus is fine.
Maybe I should get the ultra lol. I pre ordered the green on the last night of the pre order. I just have to wait til March 10th for it to arrive since it sold out. It's going to be a long wait lol. But I'm going to hold onto the phone for a long time. I don't want to just settle on any color.
The two length is the regular and the Ultra Wide lens those are the two lenses that I use on the phone out of the two phones which one is better when it comes to video and pictures
If you aren't going to use the pen and added camera features and $250 means something to you then get the Plus. If you don't mind spending $250 for features you'll never use get the Ultra.
