Galinstan is a liquid metal alloy that contains the metals gallium, indium, and tin. It can be used in place of mercury a variety of experiments. Watch here how galinstan can be used in place of mercury in the classic "mercury beating heart experiment". You can learn more at the article found at this link: pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/...

I recently learned something that blew my mind. When salt dissolves, the salt molecule a dually splits into sodium and chlorine ions. This seemed preposterous but I had chemists confirm it to me so what's the difference between that kind of dissolving and the dissolving that happens with, say, sugar? Are there other compounds that "dissolve" in this way too? Are there interesting demonstrations you could do to show this happening?
@ir8free

many ionic compounds called salts also dissociate in water.
@chemistryofquestionablequa6252
Sugars just dissolve into individual molecules in say water.

wait since its metal itself does it oscilate when initally combinding droplets to form the final blob? Does it look like cavitation or different?

I wonder how we can convert the kinetic energy of the ocilations to an electrical charge flow.

@jpjp9111

@@thecriticalpoint A thought..... What if we confined this experiment to a slimmer container such as a test tube. Then we take an appropriate magnet surrounding the outside of the "test tube". My thought is that the ocilations in the magnetic field might potentially create said energy via induction. I don't know but it makes sense.

I wonder if it would work in place of mercury for a switch. Mercury switches are very useful, but not used much any more because of the toxicity of mercury.

Isn't galinstan significantly more expensive to obtain than either mercury or pure gallium?
@meloney
@meloney Год назад
Well yes, but pure gallium easily solidifies at room temperature and mercy vapors are risky. Also it's just a tiny amount in those thermometers.
@OmniversalInsect

Would it not be possible to make the alloy from its pure metals?

@davebdot6713
@davebdot6713 7 месяцев назад
@@TommyTechnetium windowglass. It's made by letting molten glass float on molten tin. As i was writing the earlier comment i missremembered the tin part and mistook it for mercury. So it's probably not possible to make floatglass using galinstan Floatglass is easily distinguishable from normal glass when you look at said glass from the side. Floatglass has a greenish tint to it
