This short video explores usual recovery times following laparoscopic or open gallbladder surgery to give a prospective patient some idea to plan ahead. Around 95% of the procedures are performed through the keyhole route but in a small minority, the open operation is used. This video draws a distinction between the two. In addition, there is a list of symptoms at the end that the patient or carers ought to be aware of, to call the doctor if the patient is not improving.
00:00 Introduction
00:10 Laparoscopic versus open operation
00:47 Hospital stay
00:57 Return to work
01:19 When can I drive
01:47 Diet after the operation
02:03 Sexual activity
02:19 Dangerous symptoms after op

I am 70 years old. Had my gallbladder removed in May 2023 by laparoscopic surgery. I was put on regular diet immediately following surgery. Immediately ate eggs and sausage, waffles and syrup, orange juice etc. No nausea or diarrhea ever. Mild pain only lasted a week.

Wow! My first meal after surgery was bread and sausage. That was served at the hospital. The dr was upset and told me who gave me permission to eat these things. He said liquid diet for 4 months. I'm experiencing alot of gas. Very bloated. Some people tell me I need to start eating solid foods. My surgery was on the 31st of January 2024. This week gonna be 2 weeks I think since I had my surgery.

I am 12 days post op from gallbladder removal. To preface this, I went into this in pretty great shape. The first day or 2 was as expected, pretty sore, had a light diet of mostly jello and easy foods like apple sauce. The biggest thing I can recommend, get up often and walk. A body in motion, stays in motion. I was sent home with a couple days worth of narcotic pain meds…never used them. Tylenol, Advil, and rest worked fine for me personally. I have had no issues with bringing food back, thankfully. A couple more weeks of a lifting restriction to protect the incision sites, and this will all be in the past.

My daughter had this operation, but my god she went through the mill, she could not eat or drink for day, had very bad acid reflux that burned her chest, was unable to lie down and needed to sleep sitting up. It was terrible indeed and a few times I thought I would lose her. Many people say they recover fast and that's good for them. But please think very carefully before getting your gallbladder out. After her gall bladder was removed by a top consultant in London, it was found she had no stones, just slush in the gall bladder. You can pay a high price for getting this gallbladder out. Maybe you'll be fine, but after seeing what my daughter went through I would never wish it on any young adult. She was very fit, always eats healthy, no drink, smoke, drugs, or anything. She was in great health apart from pains in her back and feeling nausea,, but god, after she came out of surgery, it was a nightmare for about 2 months, then things gradually got better, but she's still not 100 percent right. I don't want to frighten people, but do your own reading on it, about bile coming back up or going into the stomach, very painful and burning. I'm a mum, not a doctor and I'm just saying what we went through. Try everything if you can to get rid of stones naturally, I know the pain, but be careful. See dr eric berg dc on u tube.

I am sorry that your daughter suffered in the post operative phase. Having observed hundreds of patients, the great majority of patients recover well and with out undue symptoms or disability. It is always advisable to seek medical assistance, if the recovery does not go to plan.

I had gallbladder out in February 2024, surgery at 8am woke in recovery, no heprin shot, no compression socks no circulation device, sent home by 1200 noon same day. Did as i was told walked every few hours. 10 days later major DVT in left leg also 2 in lower lung. Hardly had any symptoms in leg, but had them in lung, went right to ER. 6 days in hospital on blood clot IV. Now have to be on blood thinners for 6 months and be monitored by my primary Doctor. Listen to your body and don't be afraid to get help. Best place is ER "lucky to still be here"

I was in such a bad way after my surgery and everything was ignored by the doctor who did it and the staff. They sent me home after one night, in thorough pain, and was rushed back to emergency a full day later. I was lied to again, had ultra sound, etc., still could not stand the pain. I found out that the file went missing completely and to this day, years later have nothing but problems. Can't track the doctor down because I tried. Maybe he was killing a few, but it s crap everything afterwards, and you can also get bowl cancer after this operation and die, like my brother did! They are all liars and normally trying to sell crap!

Had my surgery five days ago and I'm doing pretty good. I want to mention something that I have never read before in all of these videos about what can take place after the surgery. For my first 3 days anything I drank anything I ate went right through me has diarrhea. In those three days I went to the bathroom maybe 25 times. Unfortunately no one told me that was a possibility and it freaked me out. This was the first day I was able to get food down and it stayed down so just be aware this possibility. I've also experienced pretty much all the other side effects that have been mentioned and other videos. This is not a picnic peeps. It's at least three days of hell.... but it will end.

@@UrBoyGee it's actually been 2 months now. It's been a trial and error period of which foods can I eat and which foods are a problem. For instance, tonight I ate some potato chips for the first time in 6 months and didn't have any issues with it. On a separate note, I'm still having issues drinking beverages or foods that contain caffeine like coffee and chocolate. But before and after the surgery they still create diarrhea. Hate to give them up but it looks like that's going to happened.

Hi great video,I had my gallbladder removed Iwas admitted has an emergency to hospital. Because of the pain i was in it was thought it was my pancreas inflamed as i suffer with Chronic Pancreatitis & believe me i wouldn't wish that pain on my worst enemy. Anyway after a scan it was found it wasn't my pancreas,it was my gallbladder the Scan showed it was full of stones the Dr. said it couldn't of fitted another stone in there and on top of that it was completely infected. So they couldn't remove it until they had got rid of the infection completely. I was on two iv's of antibiotics and also a huge syringe of antibiotics in my cannula twice a day i lost count of how many iv antibiotics they gave me so yes it wasn't pleasant at all. What i can't understand is the pain came on in just one day I mean how long would it take for a gallbladder to fill completely with stones yet I only got the pain that day it was severe that's why i was admitted as an emergency, just strange it was full of stones and completely infected yet the pain only came when it was in that state. So I was in hospital for 3 weeks knot a pleasant time at all.

I had to go to emergency clinic 2 days ago since I had severe pain on my upper abdomen. They ruled out all the possibilities and after sonogram they found that my gallbladder was little inflamed. May be because the stone just passed. They did not see any stones in my gallbladder. I was given the medication and I left. I was wondering if it is possible fix my gallbladder naturally. Currently I am eating just fruits and veggies. Can the gallbladder get healed so that that I can avoid the surgery. It is possible to reverse it. Please help? how can I prevent from having any more stones ?

Do another Ultrasound somewhere else if they don't see stones either, you should be fine but if you continue to have symptoms see your doctor and do more tests to identify the problem

I had my gallstone removed with the gallbladder ofc. I am on my 4th weeks of recovery but I eat some greasy foods coz I had my cravings. Some are burger, fries and hotdog. I continuously drink more water but I had this feeling in my right side of stomach it feels like ticking and some pain. Is this cause of another gallstone? Liver?

It is because you don‘t stick to low fat diet suggestion. As you say yourself burgers, fries, hotdogs should really be banned from your list for at keast 2 months.

Is it normal to still be so physically tired and drained 5 weeks after the surgery? I had my surgery done on 5/15/24. I can’t tell how the further out i get from surgery the more exhausted i am. I mean i slept all the time after surgery which is to be expected, but after 5 weeks… it’s bad enough that i’ll get dizzy and sway when i stand up or even when i’m walking, just randomly. I’m trying to make sure that i am eating foods that are healthy and not hurting my stomach after eating, cause some foods i can’t tolerate anymore. I’ve always been healthy and active. I’m a preprofessional ballet dancer. I’ve never felt this sluggish, except for when my insomnia was really really bad about a year ago. But we have that under control now. I haven’t taken classes since a little before my surgery cause i had wisdom teeth removed on 5/7/24. I need to get to where i don’t feel faint almost constantly. It gets in the way of normal activities of just moving around my house. I can only imagine what might happen when i start dancing slowly again in august…

For more info, i’m a 22 year old female, that has never stayed still well. I have always been doing something, soccer, dance, cheerleading. Always active. And per my surgeon i had strawberry gallbladder. I’ve also had side pain similar to the 5 months before my surgery since i was kid before we switched to more whole wheat foods, then it went away and came back on very very rare occasions.
