As a newbie to Boats and Sailing I am always looking for good sound info on makes of Boats as to whats good whats not but its very confusing . So many questions. Maybe a Video or two on sound advice aiming at the newbies? Ty

@@zofoblueszofoblues8339 You bet it is confusing. A lot of owners don't want to admit they made a mistake for buying the boat they did, or just don't yet realize the mistake. Anything can sail around the world, if one stays in the proper latitude at the proper time of year. But I want a solid boat that can take a punishment especially when I make mistakes. Check out my Valiant 40 tours. There are 3 videos in the series. Also, the missing thing on or keel will show the differences in some keels and you want one that is strong and won't deform when blocked on the aft section of the keel faring. As far as the older boats, you never hear of a keel or rudder simply falling off of them as you do with the more modern production boats.

What great galley tips Patrick! I watched one of Barry the old Sea Dog video's where he was outfitting his boat and showed off his stainless steel dog food bowl with a non skid rubber pad around the ring. I laughed and then I see you show the same thing I said absolutely awesome and how practical. A fitting food vessel for a couple of wise old salty sea dogs. Great whale pictures at the end and the scenes of the market from Madagascar! Thanks for all you do! Fair Winds Patrick & Rebecca!

I always hated that bowl and have since thrown it out . Steels all the heat from hot food, and all the cold from cold food. Burns or freezes your lap. Anyways…another great comment from you David.

Here's my cruising tip - 2 or 3 mins boiling the pasta (or whatever) until it's softened up, put it to one side (still slowly cooking away, ) make your sauce (or whatever,) chuck the pasta in the sauce for a further 2 or 3 mins or so, et voila... Half the fuel, and half the CO2??

Scuba Tony, thanks for watching, and the encouragement. Because of your name, I will mention, we just did some snorkeling on a shallow reef off the N.W coast of Madagascar. This one small area has some of the healthiest coral we have seen in a very long time. Water temp here, 80 F. Across the Indian Ocean, even in remote Chagos, the coral and fish life is a remnant of what it once was. High, 84 degrees F, has done a lot of devastation. Nice temp for the swimmer but bad for the marine life.
@TonyAnschutz
@TonyAnschutz 6 лет назад
very interesting! I would have thought Madagascar was as polluted ad over fished as the rest of the world's reefs that aren't protected. Get some video of that. Pretty surprising to hear. I am looking forward to Madagascar. I hear the daily wind patterns are ideal for sailing the coastline.
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife 6 лет назад
I am speaking positively only about the health of the coral in a very small sampling. You are right about over fished reefs. So far, in Madagascar, I have seen very few snapper and grouper or other "edible" fish on the reefs. But that is no different any where else in the world unless one is in a protected area like the "park" in the Raja Ampat, area of Indonesia or the island nation of Pulau, where there are schools of edible fish The wind on the east side of Madagascar appears to be pretty steady trade winds. So far, the winds on the NW side of Madagascar, have a 180 degree predictability. In the morning, the natives can sail out to the ocean then use the afternoon wind shift to sail back.

Okay Patrick... You old salty sea dog.... I finally found a tip for you. I like to keep some emergency supplies in coolers in case I have to abandon a sinking vessel. They float and that way they can be tied together and over the side of the liferaft to save space. So the score is Patrick 561 .... Robert 1. I thought of that watching you defrost the freezer. I would put my food in the cooler and let the sun do the hard part as I am super frugal on power

Great tips there, Patrick. Thanks. The spring hatch latch is great, and I have yet to instal sink foot pumps. A tip back is, not that I expect you have a problem here, is that I use a 12 volt Ryobi cordless drill as a mixer/food blender. I tested it whipping cream the other day and it came out well. Its batteries should charge off the boats battery charger but haven’t tested that yet. I love your galley layout and size.

Another downside to the Corel type plates, or any glassware, is WHEN they break, there are 1000 glass shards on the salon floor and in the bilges. Don't go looking for problems. I bought a set of teak salad bowls that have a large flat bottom that serve as plate or bowl, they look great and have a nice organic feel. I'll be taking the dog bowl idea and ditching the stainless steel mixing bowls, which are too tippy.

Very interesting indeed. I like the functional non-pretentious wine glass. I didn't know some boats used sea water in the sink. Is that taken straight out of the sea? Also makes sense. Thanks. Nice video.
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife 4 года назад
Yes, that is straight sea water. Back when I started crossing oceans, in the late 1970s, every cruising boat had a dedicated sea water pump at the galley for washing dishes. It would have been a big waste of fresh water to wash dishes in fresh water. No one needed a "water maker" back then. But of course, at that time, they didn't exist.

I chain my pots down, especially the pressure cooker, when the going gets too rough. Between the fiddles and the small chain my pots aren't going anywhere. I have never liked the idea of using galley straps, but I can see how they could be useful. Good idea not using the little finger holes on the cabinets. My right hand index finger is permanently twisted about 90 degrees after a bad break from one of them little finger holes.

Tattoo, sorry to hear of your bent finger....but that is exactly the mental image I would have if I had to stick my finger in those tiny cabinet, latch, holes while at sea.

good video, thanks of the effort. Does the food freeze quicker with airflow around it or is the freezer just more efficient with it that way. I've never put anything in the bottom of my freezer, just dumped all the food in, seems to work ok but might try it your way if it saves some amps.
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife 5 лет назад
We had food on the bottom that would not freeze till we added the elevated grates to aid air circulation. These older boats do not have the insulating properties that the newer boats have.

Nice tips. Is there a boat yard in Mauritius? I’ll have to look up the SSCA survey.
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife 6 лет назад
Yes there is and there is a very nice South African man named Gary who helps run things. Actually, all the people in the office and yard are very helpful. Google and it comes right up. Taylor Smith Boatyard. They build 45' catamarans at the yard so there should be a good set of skilled people there.

Another important thing to keep in mind with Corelle dishes is they absolutely EXPLODE when you drop them onto a hard surface, something you're probably bound to do in heavy seas.
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife 5 лет назад
I was delivering a 48 foot boat from New England to the Caribbean. On the way to Bermuda, we were in some extreme weather. When the sailboat took a lurch to port, an upper galley cabinet opened and I watched the Corelle dishes slide out like a deck of cards being dealt. As one after the other landed on the opposite galley counter top, they did as you said, EXPLODEd, one after another. What a mess to clean up!.

Jail cups. They are stainless steel with a handle and made in India. Good for all mobile use. Revere makes stainless square tubs with fitting tops. That and wax paper and you can push plastic bags and seran wrap out of the picture.

I think that is a great idea if it can recirculate through the water tank to kill what is growing in there, rather than simply treating the water just before it comes out of the faucet.

I am kind of surprised I don't see more microwaves on sailboats, Seems to me, you might get really busy on deck and might want to heat something up real quick. A quick cup of tea on the night watch would be nice. I wonder if anyone has gimballed a microwave.
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife 5 лет назад
When I first got involved with this boat, the first thing that went into the dumpster was the microwave. The second thing to make a thud in the dumpster was the central air conditioning. The BTU output of propane is so high it only takes a few moments to heat up 2 cups of water. No need for a generator or inverter or other energy headaches. Certainly the floating condos, catamarans, are more likely to have not only a microwave but clothes washers and dryers......not my cruising style.

So here's a galley thought I picked up somewhere. 2 burner's are smaller and the gimble pivot nearer the Hull and on the wrong tack the pot's are facing the hull and away from the chef and end up under the deck bulkhead. Not easy to stir when you can't get a spoon in. But not my point..... Here it is. So you heave-to to cook. You always do this on a starboard tack so you're high on the give way stack. Wow that rhymes! Pleased with your one-up-manship you go below. Now you see the pots on the gimble and realise you bought a Boat with the galley on the wrong side! You curse and then get a bigger stove and use the front two burner's. A. New Childress Disciple

Thanks, Allan. That is the information I need to know. I am deaf in one ear and have 50% in the other so setting volume is difficult. Rebecca checked the video for me, but she has laser hearing and can easily discriminate sounds. Also, I noticed the volumes might sound okay on my computer then playback differently after everything is rendered into the finished video. In any case, I will make sure all background volumes are lower in future videos.

Patrick...asking if you use a Pressure cooker and/or which brand could you recommend?
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife 5 лет назад
We have a small pressure cooker which gets used once in a while. I don't think the brand matters much. At times I use it when we can only get "beef" which is actually very tough water buffalo. First pounding the "beef" as though it were Bahamian conch, then cooking in the pressure cooker makes it chewable. In the old days, when kerosene was the main cooking fuel, people used pressure cookers far more extensively to save on fuel. Now, propane/butane is very easy to get where ever we sail so stove fuel economy is not on a cruisers tight conservation list as it once was.
@psystealth
@psystealth 5 лет назад
ohk great...it was just a thought as sometimes its easy to make meals or soup in a pressure cooker as its contained in one pot.....but yes agree with much. Hey Patrick, what camera do you use for your videos? GoPro? What settings do you use for video?
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife 6 лет назад
Nearly all mobile/hand held, shots are done with a GoPro 5 as that camera has a good built in image stabilization. So most of the galley footage was done with the GoPro. The second camera is a Canon 7D mk2. That gets better quality images. Some scenes were done with the Canon on a tripod set up next to the nav station.The “thumbnail” was taken with the 7D but then reduced to minimum kb which You Tube requires. The image stabilization in the Canon lens is not very healthy so it has to be used with a tripod or held up against a tree or something solid when shooting video. Since I am still new at video making, I have been spending my time trying to figure out how to make the videos technically more appealing in post production….that is when sitting on the computer and putting all the bits of video together. When I get comfortable with that, then I will dig into camera settings. For video, I just use “Automatic”. It does well enough at this point. Of course for stills, it is mostly straight manual or Tv or Av, never any of the presets with the little pictures on the dial. The 7D, though, is heavy and clunky. I think a smaller and lighter camera would be easier to use. I got that 7D, not for video, but for its fast and variable frame rates, and other features, for shooting things, like eagles swooping down to pick up a fish. With my old Canon Rebel T2i, I would get an eagle flying into the frame and the eagle flying away and miss everything in between!

what do you do with empty cans and bottles ?
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife
@SailingBrickHouse-RVLife 4 года назад
It depends where we are...what country etc. If we are in a country that doesn’t just dump their garbage in to the sea, we bring it to the landfill or appropriate recycling location if they have this. If we are in the middle of an ocean, and there is no responsible type nation in our future we break the aluminum cans and throw in to the depths to decompose, and fill the bottles with seawater and throw to the depths. If we are at a deserted island, we wait til we are at sea and do the same. To be honest though, we don’t drink sodas or bottled drinks, and try hard to eat fresh so we don’t have that many bottles and cans, but still there are some. -Rebecca
