A digital storytelling research project for a University of Houston art education graduate class uncovers an interesting connection between the devastating Hurricane of 1900, Galveston's Vidor family, and the movie, "The Wizard of Oz." The story also documents Hurricane Ike's effects on Galveston and its ancient oak trees.

My grandmother was the last survivor of the 1900 storm. She was 4 1/2 at the time of the storm, and was 106 1/2 at her death. GREAT job on the story.

What a beautiful story of connecting the dots! Wonderful scenes from the beginning to end, flower-strewn cemetery to the poetic conclusion of the Tin Man figure at the Vidor family home. As an avid believer in the power of the people's stories, this was very endearing and enriching. Thank you!

The great storm of 1900 is still very little known or remembered throughout the rest of the country. If it doesn't happen in NY or LA it doesn't matter to many people. If it weren't for that one storm history would have been very different for Texas. Galveston was set to become more prominent than San Francisco but instead it has become something better.

Very interesting the connection between the Great Storm and King Vidor. My grandfather was 10 when he and his family went through the hurricane in Texas City. I like the parallel with Dorothy facing the tornado in the beginning of Wizard of Oz.

Thank you, that was the first thing I thought of when I realized he had directed her - empathy!

@@amyahlbrandrobinsonm.ed.9479 I've been trying to imagine what it was like for my grandfather Elmer to go through the 1900 storm as a child. I know his family took in neighbors whose houses had washed away. Reading Vidor's account helped me imagine it all. Like you, I'm also working on a graduate project involving storytelling research about the Great Storm. Maybe I'll try to include digital storytelling, like you do! Well done!

I'm from Galveston and part of what I love so much about this island City is our rich history. It's present in everyday life here. I really appreciate those willing to invest their research hours into my beloved Galveston.
