When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Gambia, many young people fell through the cracks and lost their livelihoods. Edith Kimani turns the mic on young Gambians who have been doing it tough and asks what should be done to ensure better safety nets are in place.

Please do more new about what Chinese debt is doing to African countries.
@africanmindsetseries
@africanmindsetseries 2 года назад
Most of Africa's debt is owed to western institutions and western corporations. IMF and world Bank (set up by the West after the European wars aka World wars) are the king of debt trap policy so this notion that China is the main culprit is a false narrative peddled by western media. China is simply following the example set my the West, the master of all neocolonial masters. For example, Read up about post colonial tax that France forces its ex colonies to pay. They are forced to deposit their monetary reserves in the French treasury, and it is then lent back to them at commercial borrowing rates. Anyone who dares to challenge this is removed from power. Also why do you think there's perpetual war in the Congo DRC, the richest country in terms natural and mineral wealth? Who do you think arm the rebels, etc. so they can profit from the chaos? Look up the list of western corporations linked to blood diamond,etc .... How do you think western economies sustain themselves? . Also, in terms of neocolonialism, again western influence is more nefarious than the media let on. Most of the conflicts and regime changes on that continent are sponsored or fuelled by the West in order to facilitate the continued control and exploitation of Africa's vast wealth. Look at most recently, the leaked video showing western diplomats discussing how to overthrow a democratically elected leader in Ethiopia, after months of false narrative peddled on air and social media? Please do your research rather than believing this notion that the West is all benevolent and China is all bad. As an African I can tell you that the West has caused and continue to cause more harm to Africa than China ever will. The West set up the neocolonial structures that still shackles African nations. Corruption, bad governance and bad leadership are rooted in this neocolonial system. The dictators you see in Africa are propped up by the West through Aid, arms sale, etc. From Museveni of Uganda to Paul Biya of Cameroon to Ouattara on cote d'ivoire., etc. Good leaders who stand up for African intererests are swiftly eliminated by the western coalition, because the west depends on Africa's raw materials and it is in their interests to keep Africa underdeveloped to keep the free flow of dirt cheap raw materials and extractive practices of western multinationals. If you think China is the main issue in Africa, think again. Western media is quick to talk about Chinese take over of African assets, do you have any idea who owns most of Africa's tradef assets? You guessed it UK, US, France, Australia Canada, etc.. They own trillions of African assets acquired through dubious neocolonial contracts, to the detriment of the locals. In addition, it is typical to hear rumours about Chinese taking over a port or an airport in Africa but western media somehow "forget" to report about corrupt westerners taking over Africa's ports. Read up on Vincent Bollore, the corrupt French business man , with close ties to the élysée, who owns about 16 ports in West Africa...the consequences of neoliberalisation and neocolonialism. African leaders who try to take a nationalist approach are swiftly removed through a coup d'état or some rebel group that are supported by the western coalition behind the scenes. I can say a lot more but I will leave it right here.... Things will only change when Africans realised the West have never been a friend and western imperialism, just like the Chinese must be resisted. We must also resist any western puppets that are installed as leaders in Africa, who generally don't care about their people. .We will get there as there is an awakening at grass root level.

The Chinese are better than the West.
@africanmindsetseries
@africanmindsetseries 2 года назад
@@shaunbarry4325 I tend to agree with that to an extent (although I don't trust the Chinese either) as at least they are helping to fill the infrastructure gap as requested by African leaders and they don't meddle in African politics, at least for now. African leaders are also not obliged to sign these contracts with the Chinese if they don't want to, whereas with the West they are coerced into these neocolonial deals and they know if they don't oblige, they might be removed. Of course, this is not reported in their fake mainstream media. The Chinese are not going around engaging in coup d'états, regime changes or arming rebels to create instability on the continent. They are also not going around imposing unilateral sanctions on African nations like the western alliance. Look at how they ruined the Zimbabwean economy through sanctions and then held Mugabe responsible for the misery they created, simply because he stood up to them and wanted an equitable distribution of land. After all, land was forcibly taken away from the natives of the land and held in the hands of the minority population. As an African, I would also rather deal with the Chinese (even though they are not to be trusted too) and let's face it even the US owes over $1 triliion to China, yet you never hear about it. Yet, they like to portray Africa as a pawn in Chinese hands. That's because they wanted Africa to themselves and they didn't bank on China challenging them there.
@shaunbarry4325

@africanmindsetseries
@africanmindsetseries 2 года назад
@@shaunbarry4325 LOL, I won't go as far as saying the Chinese deals are good and fair but for now I think the West is more of an issue and have always been the main stumbling block to Africa's development due some of the reasons I mentioned above. However, China is no Saint either and I don't trust CHINA either.. Ultimately Africans will have to ensure neither the West or the East have any sway on the continent. We are waking up and we will emancipate Africa.

What can the government do to assist the youths?
@njemehnjie4324

Scholarships should be given to poor intelligent students so they can complete tertiary education and vocational training as a lot of people in this category drop out of School.Grants should be provided for Youths that are interested in having their own businesses or those that are interested in Agriculture. Corruption and Nepotism should be eradicated as those who see themselves being sidelined," not part of the game " or the bottom of the barrel, have no choice but to take the dangerous journeys to Europe. Old Government officials that are of retirement age should retire and give chance to the young, educated, intelligent, vibrant and energetic Youths to take over. Better infrastructures like public amenities for example Youths centres should be built in every major city or town. Now that we've discovered Petroleum, Government should consider paying the old folks some little amount of cash as pocket money hence the Youths are the ones who usually carry the burden of these old folks. The list goes on and on.

Not so much, I think there are plenty of opportunities for youth in the US. The issue is similar to Gamia tho, in our government is corrupt to the core. They are in it for money & power and not for servitude to the Citizens. We have a lot of work to do in the US. However, the Gambia has life threatening issues for their youth. Ours has a lot of safety nets. And our economy could rebound quite quickly, the Gambian economy maybe not so much as it'll take time and money to get travel and tourism back up. The Gambia needs to figure out how to not only rely on tourism. Need to have diverse outlooks and economic sectors that can hold without tourism. More equal opportunity, not Equity (equal outcome). Need to get away from Communist ideas and seek out Capitalist ideas. Not Crony-Capitalism, we have that here in the US. But true free market capitalism. Same for the Gambia.

Africans, both at individual and government levels, can put across marvellous and apparently faultless plans for development which can lead to great achievements, but implementation has always been impossible or a tall order. This should not always be the case if only personal sacrifices and recognizing and respecting talents become the order of the day. When we talk about personal sacrifices and selflessness Thomas Sankara comes to mind. When we talk about talents,what can't these young analysers (Nyang Njie especially) achieve giving the opportunity, barring all distractors and selfish interests? The ugly "creatures" such as tribalism lip-service and sectionalism and all other vices must also be completely eliminated in Africa, especially in the Gambia, period!

Unfortunately, it seems he's unable to chop wood to sell for firewood and gets beaten by forest security. I can understand his plight to feed his family and I can also understand the government side of protecting forests (eg deforestation and chasing out animals/wildlife). How can we assist one family without also working with the government to see what assistance families can have to be able to feed their families and also get an education? It seems for now they have to sacrifice their future to feed their current situation. Government can't solve all of these things definitely. We need charitable organizations to also step in. We do have some, Samaritan's Purse, but what about local churches, local groups banding together to make sure everyone is fed and has access to basic needs. It's a huge question. And corruption doesn't help anyone except the thieves doing it. We need to stop corruption, and return to sensible economic and political discourse to actually do the job of helping those the government serves. What are your thoughts?

We need to be careful of those that speak of Equity tho. Equality is different, we need that, not Equity. Equity is equal outcome, we need Equality, which is equal opportunity. Equity is a Communist ideal which Communism has killed 100+ million people. We need entrepreneurs and innovation to solve local issues and problems. I will do what I can to assist, but it will take the Gambian people to work together to resolve these issues. For future generations. This English language is dangerous. Mosts woman’s now day’s think speaking of woman’s violations makes them feel smart. Shame . There is no woman’s violations in Gambia 🇬🇲 cause we Gambian men’s respect our woman’s. So stop making looks like we have this American problem in here

What a loser. Your analysis is completely off point. Domestic violence or gender-vased violence occurs everywhere. Most of the victims are women and a minority of the victims are men. This cannot continue to be swept under the rug by cultural or religious norms.

It's so sad when someone who doesn't know anything about the statistics of gender-based violence in the country spewing trash. Get your facts right before talking.
