Those are all different games with different ups and downs. No way to compare them apples to apples and give a definitive ranking. A&A G40 will always be the superior Larry Harris game to me, but I really like the new mechanics and faster play of War Room. Of the others you list, Rebellion and Twilight Imperium are my favorites. I'd also throw Twilight Struggle into that mix.

@@BrianPlaysG40 Just curious - why do you think A&A G40 is superior to War Room? I'm debating if I should get one or the other as both seems a little excessive and redundant! :)

Again, that is purely a matter of personal preference. G40 will always hold a special place in my heart because I grew up with A&A, and this is the ultimate culmination of that play experience. I also enjoy the chess-like nature of knowing where each piece begins, how and when it can move, etc. WR operates on a different premise. Limited orders, bidding for turn order, and gathering resources make it a much different play experience. It depends on the type of game you prefer. I love them both, and I don’t consider them redundant at all.

@@BrianPlaysG40 Thank you, that's a helpful thought. I never thought of G40 like chess, but I can see what you mean. I've played both, but my wallet is making me have to decide. I loved G40, have only played it a couple of times, but with such a long playing time, I was getting an idea for it. Never saw a game actually conclude the couple of times I played in a group, so perhaps that's the one draw back I have about it. I love long games, but not everyone wants to stick around for that long. War Room I loved for the order writing. That was thrilling and fun and a lot of laughter ensued because of it. I think the streamlined approach to that game is in its favor, though I found combat to be really brutal. Again, I only played a couple of games, but it seemed like one of the main strategies was to bomb the living daylights out of a stack with planes, then maybe bomb it again because your opponent will move reinforcements in, then move your army in the following turn. I felt like there wasn't enough time to build up artillery for anti air. But I guess it's more about guessing where your opponents planes will go and send yours there to meet them. I just felt combat was a little off, but I can't tell if that's just because of only playing maybe 1 global game and 1 or 2 Eastern Front games that didn't get finished due to time. There doesn't seem to be a "defender" like in G40; the stances on the battle board seem a little less important because of how much dice we're rolling all the time. But maybe I need more time with the game? To get to know it? What do you think? That's the one I want to get because of the group dynamic; but combat just felt weird to me. Perhaps I just need to get used to it.
