Working on my backlog of projects, that grows ever larger and I grow older. Figured it was time to finish this thing I started over 3 years ago. Here's a first demo, I'll make an in-depth video re: code and graphics once it's complete!
Hey Ben, Hope you're doing well! Just wanted to say how much I love your videos. Your projects are always super cool, especially when you turn gaming consoles into portable devices. Those are my favorites! It would be awesome to see more of those portable projects. I know a lot of people, including myself, really enjoy them. Your work is always inspiring and fun to watch. Thanks for all the great content, and hope to see more soon! Cheers
I think the physical hardware hacking aspect, as in having to replace the flash chip, is too big of a hurdle for casual enthusiasts. I've been working with Arduino etc. for years, lots of practice soldering, and I still found it challenging and it took quite a bit of effort. Oh, and I just happened to have an STM device laying around to dump / flash the memory with, which a lot of people do not. I agree though, it is such a neat little piece of hardware, I wish there had been more interest in it :(
So cool! I really love these Game and Watch units, and I wish more people had taken interest in them when they came out. Thank you for documenting your work Ben, I really enjoy seeing your projects :)
Is there variant that does that? Iirc all versions I've played customer rams bar tender head on to the wall through table. Gotta be bad festival for all customers to be so angry to get beer 😂
This is cool, man! I got a second game and watch just for this a couple years ago when you said you were going to do this, actually. Also, I 3d printed a holder for this that makes it a desk clock when in clock mode. Best desk clock ever! It's like a little clock mario fish tank going on. I use it every day on my desk at work. It's so great! I can get you the file if you want to try it out.
@@joeblow229 It can stay on always when it's plugged in. I do have the Mario version as the clock. I have a USB-C plug fastenend into it making it like a dock for the Game and Watch that it slides into.
What a great idea! Tapper is perfect for conversion to an LCD game. I do think the main guy should look more like Mario though, I mean, he does in the arcade anyway!
I am still so annoyed that Nintendo didn't add the original YM-105 Super Mario G&W game on the new super mario bros G&W system... Been wanting to hack it in there for quite some time, so really cool to see a good template for how to make the G&W games on the system!
The hardest part of accuracy in designing these is sticking to the 100 segment limit the original chips were capable of driving. I mean, design however you want, but going way over that 100 segment limit tends to make games that don’t quite feel period accurate.
The Zelda version is the one I'd pick to 'hack' (which, I did). You can swap the original firmware for something else with the stock flash-memory, or, you can remove the flash chip and install a bigger one if you want to go with homebrew / hacks / ROMs. I decided to install the bigger flash chip, run stock firmware, and also have the option of running emulators.
That's a big question that deserves an in-depth answer. I think the Pico has a ton of untapped potential, and it's cheap, but I'm not the 'expert' you're looking for to answer this. As far as 'microcontroller', then yeah, the Pico would be my pick. If you mean an 'all in one unit', then it would probably be to hack one of the PowKiddy or other Chinese handhelds and add your own home-brew code.
I learned there was an emulation of sorts for the old LCD hand helds like this. I grew up in the 80s with those Tiger Hand helds. I have a love hate relationship I guess. Ben if there are "roms" for these types of games out there due to emulation how difficult would it be to implement those games into the game and watch?
Ah, nice! It would be nice if you can make (bigger sized) typical Nintendo character sprites with more (face) expression and 'movement' (character in a sligtly other angle etc). Make a tilt screen so you can see all of characters at once. Idea for an extra difficulty; A woman at the bar and wants wine instead of beer or a woman that takes the beer of a man (by flirting) so you need to throw a second beer. 😄
