Fantastic subject and an excellent video! My approach to dog training revolves around play and praise, recognizing their superior benefits compared to other forms of rewards for dogs. It's crucial to understand that the essence of play lies in the interaction dogs cherish with humans. Dogs have been bred and shaped by humans, making this connection vital for their happiness and training success. Your insights on this topic are truly valuable!
Again great content! I really enjoyed your talk with Michael Ellis, id love to see you have a similar podcast with Ivan (the Great) Balabanov who has a great deal of insight on the topic of this video. Keep it up and thanks again!
I like this definition. Dr. Ian Dunbar, DVM, Ph.D. created the Sirius training course about 40 years ago to use puppy play as an opportunity for socialization, training, and obedience for pet dogs. I'd love to see a video where you discuss this topic, as well as Dog aggression with Dr. Dunbar. He is an interesting, cross-disciplinary trainer with a wealth of knowledge on the history of dog training methods.
The mechanics and nuances of play are a deep dive once you get into it. Ivan has a pretty good knowledge of play, it was a real game changer learning from Ivan. You can learn so much about a dog through their play style. I tend you use play to build foundational skills rather than to address behavioural issues, especially when arousal is the main issue.
Last year I had a client's dog who liked her games of tug to be ROUGH. She LOVED being slapped in the face during a game, the harder, the better - the more "fight" in the game, the more she enjoyed it. She was super aggressive when I took her on, ended up being an amazing dog almost exclusively through the use of play.
I would argue that there are subtile differences between play and games. Games usually have a predefined purpose and structure or rules while play allows the exploration of actions & reactions without the aforementioned? 🤔 I could be totally wrong about this though 😀
Agreed. Everything I teach my dog and new puppy is through games. I believe in keeping it fun for the dog at all times. Small children learn through games. Dogs are very similar to small children I find.
Hi greate advices. Do you have a recommendation for quality online content (even paid) regarding Leash Reactivity. I'm after 3 training without success and I just can't find any professional information on how to approach this issue. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
😂 my dog always wins the tug game! Trick is she has learnt that it’s boring to run away with the tug toy. So she brings it back and pushes it at me to play tug again!
