Game Boy Player Review (GameCube)

I've used the timer feature on the gameboy player before and quite often actually. Say your popping something in the oven, and wanna play your game while you wait. If you're anything like me your tv and gaming systems aren't hooked up in the kitchen. I can't tell you how many meals i've overcooked because of being totally immersed in my game and not hearing the timer go off in the kitchen. Nowadays everyone has a timer on their phone but back in '03 - '04 this was a handy feature imo.

I recently found a boxed complete Game Boy Player for £70 on eBay. After umming and arring over the price I took the plunge and bought it and I can honestly say I don't regret it! It's a fantastic little add-on and playing original Game Boy games in full screen on my 26" LCD TV is amazing!

Pokemon Pinball Works. Just turn off the rumble feature and wedge something under the Console so it won't be resting on top of the Cartridge.

Wow, had no idea you were from Croydon, or at least presumably near the area lol. Thanks for filling me in on the history of the GBP's conception, I always thought Nintendo put it out because the Gamecube was struggling up against the PS2 and OG Xbox, and may have used it as a trojan horse to tap into some of the GBA market. That being said, it does make me wonder if we'll see a 3DS/DS Player for the Wii U someday, considering the Gamepad is more or less the lower half of the 3DS.

For those interested in a Game Boy Player, things have very much changed on how to obtain one. As while finding a Game Boy Player itself is very cheap (got mine for $16 USD), the Start-Up Disc has become sort of a random price sort of thing, you could get lucky and get it for $30, or get scalped on one that's almost $100. I find timers super useful since I always fall asleep while palying games. Or sometimes I rarely forget to turn off the console so, this very handy feature was also ahead of it's time.

found this for $20 bucks at a GamesPlus here in Houston, TX. Bought it immediately as i know a great deal when i see one. I was happy to find out some of these games actually look a lot better on the big screen such as GBA iridion 3d and Super Mario Kart Circuit.

I got the player at a yard sale with a ton of other Nintendo stuff for 5 dollars, but No disk I found one one eBay a few days later for 8 dollars So I got it, worked fine love it, loved the review keep it up mate!

You can use the ext. Port on the player for connecting GBA link cables, if you have the right cable with a older style connector on the other side, you can plug a GB printer in as well!

Seen many GB players used over the years but as you mentioned without the boot disc they are worthless so have yet to add to my shelf, great enjoyable review!

This might sound crazy but I really like playing GBA games on my Retron 5 as opposed to the Gamcubes GBA player. I know its a emulation console but its really nice that you get more filter options and it plays in 720p as opposed to the Gamcubes 480p via component cables. Not to mention I'd rather play GBA games with a Super Nintendo controller than a GameCube controller. It just feels more natural and not so bulky like the GameCube controller. This is coming from someone who has a GameCube GBA player.

u can plug a link cable in the front of the player u can use gameboy pocket/color link cables and gba link cables.

well the gba sp dpad is actually the same size as the gamecubes dpad, but what i recommend using for the gb player is that u use a snes controller using an snes to gc adapter as it has all the needed buttons and the dpad is great

awesome job. I love the GBA player...one of those pieces of hardware you didn't know you couldn't live without...lol

The only GBA cartridges that would not work with the Game Boy Player naturally are the Game Boy Advance Video carts. It seems the TV studios or movie studios who put their movies and shows on those carts wanted Nintendo to block their contents from ever showing on the GB Player thus making it useless to watch them with the GameCube. Even with that being block, you could still watch GBA Videos cart on the Game Boy Player by using a special bypass code from an Action Replay or Codebreaker cheat device thus allowing you to bypass the security lock on the cartridge and loading the video with no prob.

Pokemon Pinball does work with the Game Boy Player. It does go in there, because its longer than the normal Game Boy games. I don't see why it wouldn't...

Using a modded gamecube you can use the gameboy player without the original disc using homebrew.

@zombiecraft don't you mean the 2000s because the gameboy player wasn't made until the 2000s so yeah

Nintendo: Do you wanna play your Gameboy Advance games on your TV?! Consumer: Aw sweet, they're gonna come out with a wire that links your Gameboy Advance to your TV! Nintendo: Then all you need to do is buy (essentially) a 2nd Gameboy Advance and a Nintendo Gamecube!

just found a gamecube loose with game boy player, the disc and a 251 memory card in a flea market in Morocco for around $10 that was awsome

Um the com port and ext port work together so you link a Game Boy and a Game Boy player together for multiplayer, I know this works by testing mine.

You actually can play Pokemon pin ball on it. You just have to like prop up the GameCube

it does work but would you want a GBC cartage rumbling wile plugged into the game boy player? i guess you could remove the battery and play it with out the rumble feature.

Good review as usual! I have this add-on device for my GC and I love it! I honestly either didn't know or forgotten about the eject switch on the side. >_< The only gripe I have is that it won't use the color feature on Super Game Boy enabled games, like Donkey Kong for example. No big deal though as I have the SGB also.

emulation is a fine way to play game boy games and it's 99% close the the real thing and a great way to try stuff. but for some reason it feels better to have the cartage playing on real hardware.

How do original game boy games look on game boy player? Do they look like how they would on original game boy, game boy pocket, or game boy color?

its like a gba but stuck in a model for the gamecube,get the disk,and play the games

i just bought one without the disc, though i used an old memory card and a memory card exploit to still be able to use it :)

they can also do a new version for the N64, that would be awesome, and even a newer version for the GameCube without the disc require, and with internal games, that would be awesome.

My GameCube story: when I was 5 my mom and dad surprised me with a GameCube and I had 1 game that I loved, Spider-Man 2. It was so much fun to play it w/ my 3 yr old brother then a few yrs later it just disappeared I didn’t ask were it was. Then when I was eight getting ready to move from my old house my uncle gave me a GameCube and I was surprised and there was like a racing/car game and it was cool. Then later I lost the GameCube and I became upset. Until one day my brother found ROBLOX which I loved very much I would play it on my pc a lot but then my parents wanted to get rid of my pc so they bought me an Xbox 1( there’s an unboxing video of it on my channel) and I have 3 games for it Call Of Duty Black Ops III and Grand Theft Auto V and ROBLOX. And I looked up like Nintendo consoles and I find the n64 and the GameCube and the game boy and the ds and the wii (wich I have) and the switch. I like Nintendo except for the wii but I also like the Xbox then I lived happily ever after.

I got a preowned one from CeX a while ago, £18. One nit-picky bit about the video though, I got excited when you said that M&M Games was in the London area (as I'm from Essex myself, so it'd be an easy commute), but it's actually in Surrey, which is a little too far out for me. :-(

wish it was full screen. also i seen gameboy videos that said can't use it on gameboy player. don't know why they did that.

nope :) it's a slot for holding your game cube memory card. the ps2 did the same thing with it's game cases

I remember some lucky kid got dat SNES GB player and I wished so badly for GB player for GC, now as an adult they are frikkin expensive including delivery and import price x-x
