Great video! I was wondering; when you make these videos, you're obviously filming in real time as you make these projects. Did you practice making a couple of these before making the video? I just know that if I was doing a video like this, it would feature me messing up about a million things lol.

Hey, I've watched both parts of your Gameboy build, and i think this is super awesome, and i was wondering if it was possible to do something even more awesome: making gameboy-like cartridges to put into the Gameboy Zero so that it'll play those games, giving you the ability to create custom games without getting sued for creating a game for a console you don't have licenses to create games for or something. This could take things to a whole new level were people can make their own consoles completely, from hardware and looks to game design! This could be a good idea for a video where you explain exactly how a normal console would work and stuff.

Kenneth Fleming I think that is possible my idea is to get a SD card reader hooked up and get a 2 - 5 GB SD card per game (depending on ROM size) Or replace the SD card usb drive if the raspberry Pi could read it but you would need a usb port so a lot of modification. Edit: I didn't watch part 2 now I did but it is possible you need a lot of coding to make a custom game.

Dropped in to say that this video tutorial is excellent. The filming and camera angles are perfect, the voiced instructions are very clear and easy to understand with references to other videos and guides, the "boring" parts are sped up, and to top it off; the music was a great fit that was faded in and out at the right times. Well done!

For better sound quality, use 1uF capacitors instead of resistors. The capacitors will prevent the stereo channels from backfeeding into each other and causing distortion. Using resistors only is bad because it just lowers the volume of the audio. Using an inductor/ferrite bead is even worse because it acts like an RF choke and further reduces volume and adds distortion. If you find the volume is too loud with 1uF capacitors, you can add a single resistor after them to reduce the volume. You can also experiment with the value of the capacitor, lower and higher values will change the frequency cutoff. So you can reduce the lows or highs or keep it somewhere in the middle.

This is so awesome. From all the amazing work it's almost it's own open source project! I actually wish that the community would take all these parts and come up with a few different 3d printable case designs. The DMG-01 is nice but it would be cool if we had a few different case options that were compatible with these parts.. Mainly something that would more easily accommodate shoulder buttons and perhaps 3DS style analog sticks. Maybe based on the GBA case. Either way this is SUPER awesome :)

FYI, use a hair dryer on the screen to remove the adhesive. A hot air station is what I use of course but hey, I'm assuming you don't generally have a nice workstation like that and a hair dryer will be fine. Also, use a knife(to remove the old) and then some 3m double sided adhesive, it'll work a lot better than hot snot and you won't need a bracket. Hot snot should generally never be used unless it's to tack a wire down when building electronics.

Would make replacing parts sooo much easier and could be refined to taste.

I saw one video on here of one someone did and it looked pretty bad because they cut out the back of the screen so parts of the controller board would fit
@diglet553
@diglet553 7 лет назад
Theyd be too small to fit a decent sized battery. The Pi, screen and Teensy board draw around 300 to 400ma (varies depending on the Pi's workload). Plus, some extra current is wasted in the step up power converter, therefore the battery needs to be at least 2000maH in capacity, whcih generally won't fit an SP case along side the extra components. You get a decent amount of play time with at least 2000maH. I get about 3 hours with my build.

I realise this video is rather old now... but if anyone wants to do a build like this... You can get 40 pin DPI screens really cheap all over the place i get mine from buydisplay... Theyre great quality and you can contro and runl them directly from the raspbery gpio. You only need to have a separate board to drive the backlight. Its far more efficient and higher quality than using a composite video display like in this video...

Do a tutorial on how to add bluetooth for an external controller. Maybe with a video out so it can be hooked to a full sized tv.

I really want to make a handheld Pi, specifically this build. BUT i have absolutely no way to solder. It's the only thing keeping me from doing this.

pro tip 3 years later: 4:50 - heat it up with a hair dryer so you can remove the thing easy from the glue.

Great project. Would love to do it, but the price of the parts, shipping and customs to my country would be around 350$, a little out of my reach. :(
