2:10 I see what you did here! 🤣BTW, I'd say I'm an intermediate-to-advanced player (far from a professional, but still) and I loved how this video has put into words many problems I stumbled upon when I first started to work on fast passages (for instance, Goltermann's capriccio tricky coda, or the Breval sonata in G) in a much clearer and articulate way I would ever be able to do. I remember my teacher telling me to practice fast passages "slowly" and thinking to myself "but the mechanics of playing fast are NOT exactly the same!" and getting so confused. As always, a super useful video that I wish you had made years ago.

Where was this video last year? I gave up on Goltermann because of the "practice this slowly." Never got better than medium speed. 20 quarter notes under the required tempo.

What are your thoughts on using this technique but exaggerating all of the left hand motions? I often practice slowly thinking ahead, with a lot of activity in my left hand, but also picking up my fingers extra high and hitting them down on the fingerboard. Is exaggeration necessary?

Em passagens rápidas no capotasto -- que é o caso desse trecho do Haydn apresentado no vídeo --, naturalmente uso aquele limite entre a carne e a unha no 1° dedo (ou até mesmo a unha). Mas não me parece natural e me sinto insegura. Alguém mais tem essa sensação?
@IliaLaporevcellist
@IliaLaporevcellist 5 месяцев назад

Poxa, professor, Muito obrigada. E parabéns pelo canal, me ajuda bastante :)

Thanks for these uploads!! I suppose I should start working on the Haydn C. Playing those fast runs aren't an issue for me, the issue is being able to sight read through the piece. Is that your beautiful French cello?

Could you explain the glissando to open e harmonic in libertango played by HAUSER ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AcCrnDtgQc0.html at 1:40. I saw after the harmonic with up bow, he jerks the bow down, and I wonder if that jerk produce any sound? 🙏

I treat a piece as a dance, and just learn the steps of the dance.

Why are you playing thumb position so low? I thought thumb position was only at the octave and above?
@IliaLaporevcellist
@IliaLaporevcellist 5 месяцев назад
Usually it is. But in some musical works it is written like that. Like in that excerpt of the Haydn Concerto that I am showing. Besides, not using the thumb in that passage, would be extremely tricky.

Ok a little embarrassing for you, that whole motto “if you can play it slowly you can play it fast” from twoset is said IRONICALLY. They don’t believe it, they don’t advocate it, The whole point is to MOCK the person who said it, the guy who played flight of the bumble bee badly. Because of course it’s not true. It has nothing to do with slow practice.
@IliaLaporevcellist
@IliaLaporevcellist 3 месяца назад
Oh, I did not know that came from TwoSet. Funny, it comes from my teachers and they are right. If you can play it slowly and good, and bit by bit increasing the speed. Than fast will be not a problem over time.
