Game Changing Planetary Free Coaster Hubs Just Got LIGHTER!! 

In theory you guys could also do 7075 drivers like the colony hubs. Cheaper/lighter option then titanium. Especially for other hubs. Also an FYI. A tree cassette hub and a few similar hubs around 14oz full chromo are lighter then a profile mini if you make ti bits for them. A ti tree for example would be as low as 9 to 10oz for a rear hub.

Not surprising the free night style hubs weigh what a cassette hub does and rhe wheel you're talking about has the lightest rim that's street worthy. Like onky 35oz before spokes vs like 37 on alot of cassette wheels. Let alone the 20 ounces alone on more typical coaster hubs at lightest vs the like almost 30 most are. Even vs a birdcage to a clutch v2 its still a quarter pound lighter then that set up easily. On a really tuned set up a pound lighter isn't surprising. My next rear wheel is gonna be lighter then a profile mini wheel with a planetary coaster. Bsd or one of the other lighter hub shells. She male modded ti axle drive side 10mm female bolt non drive side male 14mm axle. Aluminum axle nut ti bolt. Ti driver ti or aluminum jam nut and probably some bearing mods to save a bit of weight and try and make the hub roll faster and smoother. Butted spokes(either sapim race or d light or) or aero/polymer spokes(sapim cx rays or berd spokes) alloy nipples weight weenie rim tape tubolitos and light tires. Full wheel set is like 6 pounds flat front and back with tires. Sub 7 including pegs. Eclat carbonic rims plus back ups laced to some alloy rims. My cassette hub is gonna be like a 10 ounce rear hub. Front hub like 6 ounces. Dependant on shells cause they all weigh different and the venus is the heaviest but nicest looking. The regular all chromo planetary weighs less then an all ti profile z coaster. Just using basic math and material science and common sense. Apply similsr weight savings to ti parts on a mini hub to the planetary design and as low as 12 ounce coaster hubs are possible. 7075 driver and a few other mods to the over all design would net like 11 ounces for pegless set ups if you went 14mm 7075 axle bolts like tree did for awhile before ti bolts were available. Ti bolts are barely heavier and strong enough for pegs vs the 14mm 7075 set up is truely pegless flatland or race only. But we're talking as much as like 12 ounces on hub weight alone. And like 2 to over 7 ounces on the rim over some other light street rims and common choice street rims. And still lighter then birdcage and e440s by like 10 to 20g. And heaviest shell no ti or exotic materials is still as light with hub guards as the lightest khe style or traditional style coaster by odyssey with plastic internals. Lightest shell like a qp savings. In theory pegless set ups for transition only you could get sub 6 pound wheelsets with this coaster. It's just silly how much weight they save. Vandals are easily as strong as my favorite old rims, but like 3 ounces lighter per rim. Bare minimum on just the rear wheel it's like over half a pound in savings over other light set ups, like bare minimum absolute lowest possible weight savings is still a qp ish. High end I could see like over 15 ounces being possible, like potentially as much as like 19 or 20 ounces.

Just before weights are shown. Guesstimate is depending on hub shell used like 12 to 13oz is possible on the planetary hubs. Alienation maybe a bit heavier due to a heavier shell design for that awesome look.

Tbf. If you made a ti driver for certain cassette hubs on the market they also fit like 3 to 9 other hubs also on the market. Old example cause I don't wanna throw any shade. We the people Supreme hubs and old shadow rant hub were both q lite designs. Shadow never released ti bits for the hubs but wtp did. Wtp also didn't have a nice of a guard solution as shadow. I mixed and matched upgrade bits to get my wtp shells set up perfect. Proper magnalite cassette hubs axles fit the free night and other planetary hubs. Also fit animal stuff. 4 different brands currently on the market with a high engagement cassette hub would also use the same drivers and axles. Same with odyssey hubs and joy tech drivers and every other joy tech design style hub. Or profile ti parts in older primo hubs.

Well, you’d have to try to see the advantages because they are certainly there. Same with cassettes. Both have advantages for certain riding/trick styles

I'm (51)old school as well. When I got back into riding 11 years ago after a few years off. All I was seeing was that free coasters gained popularity. At first, I was like wtf is this bs. It didn't take long for me to see that this is where street is going, and I started to like what I was seeing. I like all styles of riding since I've ridden since the mid 80's. Like the old saying goes, don't knock it til you try it.🍻

Tbf. I'm modern mid school and even I'll tell you real old school is free coasters before cassettes. But reliability and weight and durability killed them till now. Bmx been wanting coasters like these for like 40 years. Just saying.

​@@x88868these aren't silent they're cassette coasters they click. Further more alot of riders agree easier to judge speed on a cassette hub cause of clicks vs coasters.

@@brunoandres__ hyper frames use the m10 style threaded mount. So the m8 size won't fit. One sec I think I know where to source m10 ti posts.

@@brunoandres__ BOX ONE TITANIUM BRAKE POSTS Google those. If I'm not mistaken they should work. You'll have to either find the hyper Haro and like that group of brands style posts which sre hard to find or get the right v brake posts to work. Not all v brake posts will work but some will. You may need to do some digging around and testing. Unfortunately hyper and a few othe brands use the annoying m10 size. Making it harder. If it's a complete bike frame there's a chance it uses a different size. But if it's any of the aftermarket frames you'll need to do testing.

Definitely some good ideas there man. There’s some really cool parts on the titanium page of their site too. Ti brake mounts, ti odyssey wedge clusters for thunderbolts. Hopefully they can keep expanding the offering

Yea, would be great to see them expand to other popular products like Wasps and 24mm spindles as you said. Maybe they should get you on the R&D team, lol.

In reality if they pick the right drive mechanisms they can make a driver that would work for bare minimum at least 2 brands hubs at once. Best case like 6. Here's an example without throwing shots currently. Wtp Supreme hubs the original ones, and the og shadow rant hub were the exact same hub as each other just different shells. Wtp made ti drivers shadow a ti axle, on the front hub shadow had a better cone nut replacement guard. My wtp supreme hubs had a shadow guard set up on the front and the ti bits from both brands in the rear. Dartmoor mtb hubs and bmx hubs were also the same thing. Another example. Proper magnalite hubs to axle kits work in free night hubs. They're also the same as some other hubs by other brands just different shells. Demolition rolls hub I believe. My MacNeil script og cassette hub had odyssey hub ti bits thrown into it that were actually joytech brand oem ti parts for a different hub. Smart planning and they could at least do axle kits that fit a good number of hubs. And drivers that'd fit all hubs with that driver mechanism. Currently. Halo mtb djd supadrive hubs shadow cassette hubs(high point of engagement model) and another brands 120poe hub are all the same basically. I'm going to be getting a bmx driver but swapping over the bushing set up to give my buddy a 1 piece 9th driver on the halo vs a 2 piece style driver. And getting a ti driver made for it at some point for me and making him one as well along with a few extra for bmx riders. Most brands just rebrand hubs from oem makers. Another famous example. Primo mix hub, the og version was just a street proof hub shell profile hub. Ti bits from each brand worked in the other hubs. Primo made an 8th ti driver was how you got it for profile. Profile ti parts were more common finding used bits and putting them into a mix shell was cheaper lighter stronger then a profile.

​@Brant_Moore some of their ti parts are just for bragging rights though and not really weight savings. Or like the old RNC where it was to for strength not weight or the exotic factor. That said. Ti fork cap bolts look amazing. And gonna be even better then the tree 7075 alloy ones strength wise.

​@@kirkwickham333624mm spindles might be a bigger problem then the hub stuff. Look at 22mm spline drive for reference. We have 2 19mm spline standards. But like 3 in 22mm and 4 if you count f Vintage 22.2mm spindle stuff, and alot of them aren't interchangeable. Meaning you can't take profile 22mm to spindle and throw any random 22mm 48 spline arms on it. Causing a whole issue. They're 22mm spindle is essentially profile spec as the akimbo fit which are same spec as tree and MacNeil which fits profile. They should do the other spline standards so we have all the options covered for weight savings. 7075 alloy spindle bolts to a stock spec so you can just use chromo ones for install or a tool properly but have alloy for pure weight savings but cheaper then ti. Profile ti spindles already come with 7075 bolts and we have that spline style available.
