Where I live, thrift stores now charge more for high valuable games. This funny enough pushed me way from collecting games at least. Controllers on the other hand 😅

I worked at a thrift store like 10 years ago. They are in such a weird spot. On one hand, they need to price stuff to move. On the other hand, they probably shouldn’t be just giving stuff away either. It’s dumb to me when they priced at eBay price. If I can get it on eBay and have someone deliver it to me for the same price I’ll just do that. Controllers are such a crapshoot. I see why they’re priced is so cheap because half the time they don’t even work.

I'm young enough to be your father. Class of 81' here... And I've been collecting since 1977 with my first 2600 and have collected for many different systems since. Am I bored? Not hardly... Too many games to play into my retirement years and looking forward to it. Games are my form of escapism and there are many worse things I could be doing! GAME ON!!!

Some really good points there PK. I guess a thumbnail like "I have a mild compulsion to buy video games" wouldn't make as good click-bait :-) I love a great deal but if I didn't have the money, I wouldn't be selling all my stuff to enable me to purchase video games. Mind you, Blaze have been making it easier for me to stop collecting for my Evercade with recent shenanigans and weak cartridge releases ;-) Keep up the awesome work!

Nice video. It think the issue is more that some people collect way too much. More than they will ever play so then it’s more about collecting …which means you could collect anything, doesn’t matter what it is. What’s helped me keep grounded is collection curating. Quality over quantity. If you’re not going to play it at some point, you don’t need it. Play and enjoy the games you have. Your collection should represent what your into, not metacritc.. or what others think is good or popular. The lesson is…collect and use/enjoy whatever it is. If you just collect and toss in a corner and constantly keep looking for the next thing….you might want to address that.

People have accused me of being addicted to collecting video-games in the past. I am not, I have a budget set aside each month for hobby purposes. I like buying and playing games. If I don't like a game, I'll donate it to the local thriftstore. I did in fact do so with the majority of my physical PC-gaming collection, leaving only my "Big Box" stuff. Could have sold the lot somewhere, but that's a chore, so to the charity thriftstore it goes. I am not inconvenienced att all by my collecting habbits nor is anyone else, they don't affect my savings, nor my life outside of gaming. So it can hardly be called an addiction, can it? There are one or two people I can point to with what would count as a "Collection Addiction" but often there are underlaying issues, such as the plethora of examples you brought up in this video. A video which was interesting to watch. So, if the rest of your videos are fun to watch, you'll have yourself another subscriber.

I agree more than I disagree. I do think most of the time when the word addiction is thrown around in entertainment circles, it is disingenuous and unfair to compare it to the addiction of something like alcohol. That said, as far as social media and smartphones go, these things are genuinely engineered by massive companies to be as compelling and addictive as possible. If someone thinks they have a collecting addiction, in so many words, they should step away from their phones and social media then reassess. As for my own experience, I admit to getting that dopamine hit when I add something to my collection, especially if it's something I've been hunting for for a while. Anything that spurs that feelgood chemical runs the risk of being habit forming. I think it's good to occasionally step back, reassess, and exercise spending control.
@PKInTheUniverse
@PKInTheUniverse 6 месяцев назад
💯 on that! Exactly, Social media and phone apps were definitely designed to be as addictive as possible. There is definitely nothing wrong with getting those sweet dopamine hits here and there. Some people make it their whole life, obsession, and chasing that dopamine hit and that can be a problem over time. Today my obsession is a game called Faria: A World of Mystery and Danger on NES . It’s a $100 game and I would love to get my hands on it. It’s one of those games people have been telling me about for years, and I saw somebody talking about it again today . I can’t tell you how many times I said my NES collection is complete and I want nothing more . It’s so easy to get sucked into this stuff.

its a case by case basis one guy thatll remain nameless, friend of a larger youtuber, got hurt, claims he had no money to pay his bills, needed new roof furnace...etc etc meanwhile sitting in front of idk $10,000 $20,000 worth of video games on his shelf in the video begging for money? Then demands people help him pay his bills with a go fund me? Another person claimed they couldnt afford $600 crying on camera once again sitting in front of at least $10,000 worth of video games in frame on camera. Theres several people that complain about bills or "hardships" but then their video game habit is still in full swing or they have thousands of dollars of video games in frame on camera in the video behind them. There is some illness or sickness that exists with people.

It absolutely is a thing. Collecting games is been something I almost always think about and prioritize on a near daily basis for the past 15 years, don't tell me it's not a thing. It just spent another $100 today on 3 PS1 games. I'm absolutely manic about the idea of having that "ultimate" collection, where every game that I think is cool has a spot on my shelf. When I started I could get a lot of them for like $5 each all those years ago, now I'm spending hundreds of dollars to keep the same routine up. I literally don't buy anything else, very, very rarely because I couldn't afford anything else with the cost of game collecting, and that's been the case for many years. I know that I don't need this shit, but I want it so damn bad, and it's for sure a mental and financial burden on me. Seems like an addiction to me.
@PKInTheUniverse

Literally at :38 I say 99.999% of the time it ain’t a thing. I’m very sorry that you are .001 of people who has that . My question is, why are you telling some random RU-vidr this? I’m not a professional, but I think you should see a professional and talk to somebody about that because if it’s having that kind of negative effect on your life, that’s really not good. If it’s affecting you in financial way or affecting your family in a negative way you really need to take some action here because you shouldn’t have to live with that and neither should your family. Like I said, I’m not a licensed professional, but I hope you seek out some help.

@@PKInTheUniverse I think anyone who has a massive room full of this stuff has a problem also. I'm commenting not for help, but because I think you're missing the context of where this discussion originates, where it's not just a poor decision making habit. Everybody has bought maybe too many games at some point, I don't think that is what is implied by "game collecting addiction". It's not the same as having walls full of cartridges and discs until you have no more space. A lot of guys on YT have these massive hoards, and maybe they can afford it maybe not, but they've spent an unreasonable amount of time and money on it, and yes I think most of them have an addiction, as do I. To me, this is where the discussion originated. These are the kinds of folks who are often positing the question of "game collecting addiction", and not those who just buy too much into Steam sales, or goes to thrift stores often hoping to grab whatever. There might be some smaller channels of folks who don't have these hoards, and they are tapping into the discussion and giving their two cents, calling themselves addicted. Yeah, they don't have the same problem. But if you are familiar with certain names and circles of the gaming collecting community here, then absolutely you will see it. 001% is far low of an estimate, but it's impossible to place a number on it.

So you’re watching a bunch of RU-vidrs and looking at what other people are doing on social media? Yeah, that’s the point of the video. you went from talking about yourself to talking about others. So you think you’re part of the 99%? Cool , glad we got that cleared up.
@warmsignal
@warmsignal Месяц назад
@@PKInTheUniverse I'm specifically talking about videos of collectors struggling with the same thing giving their insights on the addiction aspect, but I find your videos suggesting it's not even a thing. You realize you are one of the very few saying this? Why is that? Seems like a contrarian point of view. This notion that just because you're influenced by someone else to get into a thing, means you can't become addicted to it? No for the most part, I don't follow much collector content specifically, a lot of it has become stale and mundane, but those 200-300 more games I want are still really heavy on my mind.
@PKInTheUniverse
@PKInTheUniverse Месяц назад
@@warmsignal why are you watching those kind of videos? Are you trying to find out if you have the same problem? I never said it wasn’t a thing , I said for most people it’s actually not a thing. You said that I said it was not a thing. I think you’re trying to argue with me for the sake of arguing. Yeah, I get it , you have goals for games you want to collect. That’s not an addiction. It’s OK to have goals and have hobbies. I really don’t understand what your point is and I don’t think I probably will understand it. You seem like you’re making a whole lot out of nothing. I think compulsion and addiction are two different things. I think calling game collecting in most cases an “addiction” undermines what actual addiction is. It also ignores the fact that people who collect video games to excess might have some other problems and in a lot of ways this is kind of a form of self medication for a lot of people. I think you’ve misunderstood the point of the video .

It’s ironic you put this out. It’s along the same lines as my last video on gaming, collecting, mental health and neurodiversity. I agree. Most people don’t have genuine addictions but rather very strong habits. If it was an addiction then they would have issues in their day to day lives like work, hygiene, etc.

I started recently collecting physical games over the last two years or so -- getting classic games from my childhood and getting more modern (ps4/xbox one) games i missed out on. The hunt for the game i think is what's more fun than the games themselves sometimes. it's sort of like modding a console. I'll spend hours researching how to do it, how to get the most out of the console, hidden gems for the games, etc. but then i end up taking advantage of like 25% of the things i researched 🤣 i definitely think that I'm done collecting for now, I should probably limit myself to just a handful of games for the rest of this year. I have a pretty modest collection.

I have taken sort of a break from collecting. I have a nice collection of games. A few days ago I stopped at Second & Charles and while there I saw a few games that tempted me and a few other games that were overpriced. $30 for Excitebike??? While there I saw Lego City Undercover for the Wii U for only a few dollars. I also saw Ogre Battle 64 for sale which as a Nintendo 64 collector, is not only a game that I do not have in my collection but is one that I have always wanted to play. Guess what? I bought neither! Even though those were games that I wanted in my collection, I did not buy them. I have been playing fewer games as I used to and have been buying less games. I have been using my time and money for other things besides gaming. Sometimes when I play a game that I have not played much but have had for a while, I think to myself why I have not played this earlier because I find it fun. Surprises can be found within your own collection.

Technically no it's not an "addiction" per se. It's collecting behavior and it doesn't have anything to do with social media - maybe that can add to it for some. But adults and children, we collect things. That's why some collect action figures. Some stamps. Some spoons. Some "skylanders" (lol). Stats say about 40% of US have some kind of collecting behaviors. Collecting can therefore be a psychological problem too (which is like addiction) if it has a negative effect. It depends how it affects you, your finances, your family. This turned into a video rant for you for some reason. Did you intend for it to go like that? Because for some, collecting behavior can be a legitimate problem in need of some professional help and I think that is worth a mention if it is out of hand.

This is a pretty good summary of my video. Most peoples game collecting habit is heavily influenced by the internet because where would they even know to know about these games without it ? They aren’t reading video game magazines anymore. This isn’t an anti-Collector video , collecting isn’t unusual at all. This is an anti-bad habits video.
