It's very interesting how quickly you picked up the disturbing, yet innocent nature of Flandre from the song. For some context, she is the younger sister of the primary antagonist of the game, with both of them being vampires. Flandre has incredibly destructive powers, appearing as an extra boss after the events of the story. When the protagonist fights her, it’s nothing more than a fun game to her; she is playful, yet has the power to destroy absolutely everything. ZUN did a fantastic job at portraying her personality through her theme. Great video and I’m looking forward to more Touhou!

The song title is a reference to an early-20th century murder mystery novel called “And Then There Were None”. It is apparently the bestselling mystery novel of all time. 8 people are invited onto a private island, with 2 caretakers that are already there. UN Owen is the supposed murderer, where the UN are initials for the man and woman who invited them. UN Owen was later found out to have been made up, because it is derived from the word “unknown”. Each of the 10 victims are killed in a way that resembles the “Ten Little Soldiers” children’s rhyming story, where the last one hangs himself, “And then there were none”. I’m sure other people could explain the connection between this and Flandre better than me, so I’ll leave it to them. I just wanted to provide some backstory

I have to say, as someone who is extremely versed in Flandre's character, you've got her down pretty well. The detuning of the instrument to play non-existent notes actually intrigued me because it fits with the circumstances of meeting Flandre: She's escaped from 495 years in a basement, and throughout the entire main plot of Touhou 6, the player character is not told any clues that she even exists. Flandre is very excited at the idea of meeting someone new, 495 years in a basement kind of cripples your social skills. But she comes off as a very intelligent character, and talks about how her sister kept her in the basement. Flandre's special ability is the power to destroy ANYTHING, but her childlike nature means she's easily excited and accidentally kills those who play with her. She also drops a line about the player not being allowed to continue (which is always the case in the Extra Stage of a Touhou game), which shows through a bit of meta dialogue that these tense and destructive fights are, to her, just a game. It's just play time, which leads into that innocence aspect you got from listening. She's an intelligent and highly dangerous foe, she's not evil, but she has trouble holding herself back and is as such incredibly destructive. And her theme is reflective of that, and you analyzed it really well.
@mahbuddykeith1124

Her ability to destroy anything is from being able to grab the “eye” of any individual object and squeezing it. It could be that she’s referring to the hitbox of the characters.

Naa would say that the only thing that remains of all that is that she sees dueling as a game, because nobody really takes dueling seriously and really saying that she contains herself is not entirely correct, at the end of the fight she ended up exhausted she says so herself (her "power" does not seem to be really linked to her physical or combat abilities

@xXTheKingEmothXx Год назад
I think part of why Flandre got the reputation of killing people she plays with is because the Scarlets are new residents of Gensokyo, and so she hasn't had a chance to play with anyone from this new world, which assumes her reputation comes from outside Gensokyo, where naturally, she'd be playing with ordinary humans, likely ones brought in to serve as food by Sakuya. Flandre has expressed a level of guilt in written works for this, and she's smart enough to argue with her sister. She's actually a very mature girl, and is well aware of how to control her ability, and in the latest fighting game, she says some stuff about how she's annoyed by her sister, and she's going through a rebellious streak. She's certainly smart enough to understand and go along with Okina's plan, and Okina seems to think quite highly of her, which is rare, because Okina is a massive douche. Also of note, Flandre didn't really 'break out'. She's actually free to move around the mansion, she just prefers to stay in her basement because she's a bit of a shut-in. It's said that Meiling and Patche play with her a lot. Also, something of note, whenever Flandre is out of her room, Patche makes it rain around the manor, because Vampires hate running water, it acts as a barrier keeping Flandre from going outside.

These characters are hidden bosses unlocked for beating the game without continues on harder difficulties, which itself is very hard to do, making these bosses super hard to unlock in the first place. The name of this song is a reference to a mystery novel by Agatha Cristie called "And Then There Were None" (also known as Ten Little Indians or a title that would probably get this comment deleted), where there is a killer that goes by the alias "U.N. Owen" which is in itself a play on the word "unknown." I don't know if there's a reason ZUN chose to reference this novel in particular. Maybe this comment combined with the other comments talking about Flandre's character and lore implications will put two proverbial pieces of a puzzle together though. Also, I believe at one point in time this song was one of, if not _the_ , most remixed video game songs, full stop. It was very iconic, though I imagine its impact has lessened a bit since there are like, 16 or 17 other Touhou games (not counting spinoffs/fangames) that all have great music.

Some stuff I'd like to say 1. All songs from Touhou 6: EoSD are tuned at 456(±5)hz 2. I don't have ear training, correct me if I'm wrong but the chord sequence at 5:05 is "VI - VII - i", ZUN uses it a lot in his songs and I heard it's used a lot of other Minor Key songs too. 5:24 is "VI - VII - i - V", the five here was borrowed from Major, which is why it was a surprise. Same goes for 6:19 where it's "VI - VII - I", where the "I" chord feels much more satisfying because we would usually expect "i" instead. 3. The motif at 8:27 is the BACH motif, used by classical composer JS Bach; it's made up of Bb, A, C, B. Here ZUN transposed it but it's still recognisable.

Many extra boss themes are really good like Mokou's theme from Touhou 8, Suwako's theme from Touhou 10, Hecatia's theme from Touhou 15, etc. Final boss themes (Stage 6 boss btw) are all so so good. maybe you could start from Touhou 17's Final boss theme (widely known as ZUN's best recent work) and move to others from there. You actually got her character far more right by just examining her theme than most outsiders or newcomers do, who usually love to assume she's a psychopathic murderous kid, despite that not being the case at all. And that is just incredible really! Loved both this and your Hartmann's Youkai Girl analysis. There's so many incredible tracks in the series! If I had to pick one I'd love to see it's *Reverse Ideology* also known as Seija's Theme. Another very frantic chaotic theme with a very clever twist underneath! There are hundreds of songs here, and I think we'll be excited for all of them. Welcome to Touhou's music. If I may, I'd recommend the song that immediately preceded this one, the Centennial Festival for Magical Girls. To contextualize this song a bit, this song is from the sixth game of the series, and the first Windows release, the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. It is the theme of Flandre Scarlet, the younger sister of the final boss, whom you encounter as a bonus boss after beating the game. At the time, she is running wild with boredom, and is being contained within her sister's mansion by one of its residents conjuring a rainstorm which, being a vampire, she's loathe to enter. And so you encounter her in the mansion's basement, having been warned of the danger but not quite having the context for what that danger is. Being a bullet hell game, this quite quickly leads to many, many bullets being thrown around. To you, a dangerous encounter you only get the proper context for later. To her, she's found someone willing to play with her, and is very much enjoying it. In the end, a friendship is struck. To give a bit wider context, the Touhou series of games takes place in a realm called Gensokyo - the Land of Dreams or Land of Illusions depending on translation. It is an isolated mountain valley in the depths of Japan, further isolated by a great barrier sealing it off from the outside world and inverting the pressure that a lack of faith exerts on the supernatural. Thus, it is one of the world's few remaining sanctuaries for spirits, monsters, demons, gods, fairies, and many more supernatural beings. Thus, you tend to get a lot of disturbing themes, as characters are, for example, disease spirits, gods of poverty, man-eaters, vampires, spider monsters, evil spirits, monsters of jealousy, oni... you get the picture. And yet they are also, all of them, people. It's become something of a meme that after every peace-shattering incident, be it the moon being replaced by a fake or an invasion of demons due to an over-enthusiastic tourist agency, everyone involved settles down for a tea party to mend bridges. Hopefully that helps, and I hope you'll enjoy diving into the series's music.

I am very amazed how well you figured out Flandre's character and personality based on her theme. As a longtime Touhou fan who never truly dived into the details of her theme, I never noticed how cleverly ZUN portrayed her with music. Very good analysis! I would be very interested in seeing you analyse some Touhou songs that are different to Hartmann's Youkai Girl and U.N. Owen was her, such as Emotional Skyscraper (Byakuren's theme, and my personal favourite), which is alot more calm and sentimental, or Futatsuiwa from Sado (Mamizou's theme), which is also very playful but not disturbing at all.

Two extra details about Touhou music: 1. The names of the tracks often include references to a wide variety of things, from stuff out of Japanese folklore (like youkai), to even references to literature. This track's name is a perfect example of that. U. N. Owen is the name/alias used by a killer in the Agatha Christie novel "And Then There Were None". The name is a clever alias, basically a word play of the word "unknown" (as the 'k' in that word is silent). In the Touhou game where this track appears for the first time (Embodiment of Scarlet Devil), Flandre is a secret boss, an "unknown menace" you have to confront in the Extra stage you can only unlock if you finish the game without using a continue (no mean feat in the mother of bullet-hells). I must applaud ZUN's creativity in playing like that with the very title of the theme for the game's secret super boss. 2. We did tell you this is a DEEP rabbit hole. And Toby Fox went down it for the technical inspiration to make not only the music, but the basic bullet-hell mechanic of Undertale as well. Touhou + Earthbound were his primary inspirations. Not only is Touhou music certified coolness, it is a great piece of VG history.

This series has a number of songs that are much calmer too, despite always keeping the very frenetic beat. Others that are even more playful and joyous too. Just off the top of my head I can think of "Swim in a Cherry Blossom-Colored Sea" for a completely different, much more atmospheric vibe. Frankly, the best would be to play these games instead of looking at songs individually because you're going to miss out on A LOT if you only go by people's preferred ones. It's a bit like only looking at Megalovania for the entirety of Undertale and Deltarune.

Damn straight I like Touhou! When you like anime/Japan stuff and music or memes, the road leads to Touhou eventually. I now realize I missed your first video in this franchise two weeks ago, but happy Touhou Hijack, lol! I’m not actually as partial to U.N. Owen or Hartmann’s, but they are popular and memetic themes within the fandom. My preference tends to be the 6th Stage Boss themes. There has never been a final stage boss theme in any of the Touhou games I didn’t find catchy or thrilling.

Love the analysis! Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the detuning in this song is actually present in most of the other songs in Touhou 6 as well. Touhou 6's soundtrack is quite a special case amongst its peers in the series (ZUN switched from an SC-88Pro MIDI synth to an SD-90, which had a new sound for all the intruments), and beyond that, the use of detuning really distinguishes it from every other soundtrack in Touhou. I really love the way it sounds.

Very well done with the analysis, you managed to guess Flandre's personality incredibly well. ZUN did a great job in conveying her character through the music. The song is vaguely similar to Hartmann's Youkai Girl because both characters have some traits in common (mainly being disturbing) but the rest of music in the series is very different. If you're up for more Touhou break downs, I highly suggest one of my personal favourites: The Venerable Ancient Battlefield - Suwa Foughten Field.

You are going to get recommended most of the popular tracks, that belong to the Stage 5, 6 and Extra bosses (the hardest and most "wow" tracks) Take a listen to Nitori Kawashiro's theme, Akutagawa Ryuunosuke's "Kappa" ~ Candid Friend. It has some strange melodies, and it's one of the first uses of the synth guitars Zun's known for. Not all of his music is that fast and chaotic, this one is slower and less noisy. Also, Louchan2 has all the songs in the games at the correct length and in high quality (they are also available on spotify)

Really impressive how you were able to get some of the main characteristics of Flandre just from the music alone! Her theme is one of the most popular ones from the Touhou series (even people that know nothing about Touhou may be able to recognize it). I'd love to see your take on certain touhou songs like "Emotional Skyscraper - Cosmic Mind", "Necrofantasia" or "Heian Alien", which are all really great in my opinion, and from the newest instances of the game there's "Tonight Stars an Easygoing Egoist", which is a great final boss theme with lots of instruments and parts with unique features. There's also Voyage 1969/1970, which is one of my all-time favourites, but it's somewhat more on the chill side musically when compared to the others I mentioned Anyways, thanks for another Touhou break down! Always love to see your reactions and how you can get a lot of info from the source just by hearing the songs!

Im a very new touhou fan but I am a music teacher so here are my thoughts: 0:59 they are actually not, I recommend other boss themes like Remilia's (Septette of the Dead Princess) or even from other games/characters like Reimu's (Maiden's Capriccio) and Marisa's (Love-coloured Master Spark) those are examples that dont have that much of that disturbing sound you'll hear in Touhou 6, the game Flandre's theme belongs. 3:40 Its called Microtones, its the distance between 2 semitones. In my case, since Im starting my journey to do Touhou style music, I found out that in order to match the pitch, you have to go in between 2 semitones, so if A is 440 and A# is 465 I tune my DAW in between so I did 453 and its pretty close to the tuning ZUN uses on these themes. 5:31 in this case it would be IV or major 4th, Remilia's theme also use this and its my favorite sound so far. It is used in pop music too but usually it would be in a major scale like IV - iv - I (D - Dm - A). And yeah it is a suprise major chord in a minor scale song :p 6:22 I dissagree is a major chord, to me it ends on a open chord. I havent had the time to cover this song but even when listening it doesnt have that feel of happy ending, altho there are Touhou songs that do end with this chord progression. To me it ends on a open chord be cause the next section, the one with the xilophone actually stars with the same chord but instead of being (I) 7:40 it transforms into (VI) 7:42 to then modulate on the next (I) 7:44. Its a very cleaver move from ZUN to end the first part with open chords to modulate in the next one. 8:43 I think that seccion its all minor chords from the bass line, but I have not cover this song yet, even tho I did learn it by ear on my guitar. Overall you did a great job describing the relation between the music and the character, something I cant even think to do, these are just minor things I wanted to share, with no bad intentions! Great vid!

If there is one thing Touhou fans love most about the franchise more than the characters, it's the music. For an actual composer to breakdown the songs they love while both showing them what it is that makes the songs so good and deducing elements of the character of the song with such incredible accuracy, you've really struck gold here. Just about every Touhou song is either a boss battle theme or a stage theme. Other users have given some great recommendations for other songs but one I also think would be great to see you dissect is Kobito of the Shining Needle - Little Princess. If you look at a picture of the character the theme is for afterward, you may be in for a surprise.

Omg, he did THE touhou theme (although I guess there's Bad Apple as well)! It's not too hard to see why this theme is as beloved as it is, it's a perfect portrayal of Flandre's entire vibe, someone with unimaginable power that treats the entire encounter like a child-like game. I find it funny how at 0:58 u say all the themes are like this since both this and Koishi's theme are key stand-outs in terms of their composition, at least relative to the rest of the series. There are more themes like this (Nue's theme from UFO comes to mind) but the standard touhou track tends not to be quite so insane. But a universal quality they all share are those those 'suprise happy chord' progressions, they're the bread and butter to creating a touhou theme and if you're sticking to this series you're gonna end up seeing it a lot. Anyway, great vid as always and I think we're all very much enjoying seeing how much fun you seem to be having with the music of the series.

One thing that makes Touhou music so interesting, and the boss themes in particular, is how fantastically well it fits the characters and settings they're meant to represent. You can pick up on so much of a character's personality or design through listening to their theme. Probably the best example of that is the Extra Stage Boss theme of DDC, "Primordial Beat ~ Pristine Beat". There is a much greater focus on percussion, drums in particular, compared to most touhou songs, since Raiko is a living taiko drum. You can also pick up on her abilities revolving around thunder and lightning just because of how much her theme sounds like the rumble of thunder. There's so many themes in the series I want to recommend, but here's a short list of ones that would be interesting to analyse: * "Tonight Stars an Easygoing Egoist (Live ver.) ~ Egoistic Flowers." - the final boss theme of AoCF, for the Yorigami Sisters * "A Star of Hope Rises in the Blue Sky" - the stage 1 theme of HSiFS * "Faraway Voyage of 380 000 Kilometers" - the stage 5 (of 6) theme of LoLK * "Night Sakura of Dead Spirits" - the stage 1 theme of TD * "Akutagawa Ryuunosuke's "Kappa" ~ Candid Friend" - the stage 3 boss theme of MoF, for Nitori Kawashiro * The various title themes - they all share a melody called "The Theme of Eastern Story", which serves as a motif for the series itself, but they also do so much to represent the identities of each respective games
