It's been such a long time since we had a video on Elden Ring music. Glad to finally do one again! And this time it's Regal Ancestor Spirit. Certainly one of the most unique tracks I've heard so far from Elden Ring, if not from all Souls games.

A lot of people interpret this boss fight as sad and upsetting but i think this bossfight is much more complex and nuanced. I personally interpret this boss as a ritualistic step in an ancient culture's death rite. By fighting and defeating the Ancestral Spirits you are partaking in the Ancestral Follower's cycle of death and rebirth that culminates in the Spirits becoming trees. That's why this track starts rather lonely and sad, but becomes more intense and finally reaches the home cord at it's climax. Through death the Spirits find that sense of relief and conclusion through the cycle of rebirth, becoming stronger and closer to ascending into trees.

I agree, IRL stories and mythologies of magical stags and hinds revolve around not just a hunter chasing and slaying a beast, but about a cosmic force or a great spirit guiding humanity into a new age. Elden Ring seems to work with the same type of mythology where the Regal Ancestor Spirit appears a cosmic being that invites the Tarnished to a sort of game or play where the tarnished plays the hunter and the RAS plays the prey. The very hunt itself is the sign of a coming new age, a foreshadowing of the tarnished success in their quest.

This track hits me on an almost indescribable emotional level, it’s absolutely breathtaking. I’m willing to bet that Yuka Kitamura actually performed all of the strings in this herself, she did that with vocals too in some of the other games (mainly in DS3). The ending of the track always sends a huge shiver up my spine, it’s not this bombastic finale, but one of true melancholy and if I’m to be quite frank here, peacefulness. One of the most amazing moments in all of FROM’s games for me, it’s up there with the first time I stepped into Ash Lake. Just incredible

Ancestral spirits in Elden Ring are actually a manifestation of life itself as pure force of energy, concentrating the very definitions of life, death and rebirth of flesh, all in a single being, 'cause this spirits came from the Primordial Crucible, wich is in turn the sorce of all life in the Lands Between, men how i love talking about soulsborne lore😊

This will be a strange analogy but bear with me: the first time I fought the regal ancestor spirit and saw it lumbering towards me I stopped in a moment of reverence before partaking in the spirit-dance. Then the music began and immediately it took me back to 2014 when I was visiting Brazil and met the indigenous Guarani people. I was welcomed into their house of prayer and their leaders (shamans) instructed me to join the rest of the tribe in their dances. The sound of the shaker and the fluidity of the movement takes me back to those dances & it has a very sacred (set apart) feeling to it. It’s incredible for a piece of fantasy work to be able to seamlessly evoke such intimate memories in a person. Truly masterful & the sign of a true artist.

Finally!!! Great analysis as always! This boss fight was a truly mystical and wonderful experience, just like Divine Dragon in Sekiro. The boss itself, the arena, and the music were all breathtaking! The finely honed beauty and serenity of the theme creates an aura of mystique, and gives you some room for your sensibility and imagination. It shakes you emotionally and overwhelms you more than any intense music could ever do. It lingers long after the fight is over, just like ripples on the water, spreading silently and surely. Absolutely stunning. Thanks for the video, Davi!

I love that no other track in the entire game is like this one, it stands out so well and tells a story. A story of a world long left behind, but still there at the foundation, passing on its knowledge and experience in the final moments. It begins almost like a random, but hauntingly beautiful composition that gets more... form as it goes on and an understanding between the Tarnished and the Spirit is made through their engagement.

I really like that this boss theme is so different from the rest of Elden Ring. The Regal Ancestral Spirit is essentially a deity/object of worship from a time before the Erdtree - before the conquest of the Lands Between by the Golden Order, and the culture it's part of has been forced to live underground just barely maintaining their existence; all of which seems to fit with the soft, somber, tribal/primitive vibes you were getting.

Your analysis really made me rethink the purpose of this boss and the lore implications. I really wonder if this track is supposed to take you through the evolution of the tribe that resides in the underground of Elden Ring. I've loved bosses in Elden Ring, but the two that stood out to me stood out partly because of the message behind their music. The Regal Ancestor Spirit (and the Ancestor Spirit) was one of the two boss groups that stood out to me as standing for something different, not just participating in the cycle of conquest and throne-sitting that is demanded of you and all other Tarnished. Regal Ancestor Spirit and Godskin Apostles are my favorite tracks in both games, and you, Davi, have my favorite analysis videos for these two tracks :D

Thank you so much for doing a reaction video of this OST! It is one of my utmost absolute favorite OST's from Elden Ring You caught on the essence of the theme so well, Regal Ancestor Spirit is actually a boss fight but first you need to do a puzzle to be able to access it. And if you would see the arena and what the Ancestor Spirit is and it's abilities and all, it's 100% correct as to what you just described. It is a rather mystic and peaceful creature and you feel like you're in the middle of nature hearing this and ancestral. Which he is, if you ever see him, and he is also venerated by the Ancestral Followers. If you go through the area on the map you can actually see a multitude of people singing to the dead head of the "beast". Absolutely amazing and on point, thank you so much!

This is one of my favourite tracks in Elden Ring, especially when that second half kicks in it's glorious. The fact this track is so different to everything else in the game is very much a deliberate choice as those Ancestral Sprites are stated to exist beyond the reach of the Erdtree and therefore get a completely different style of music to every other entity in the game. I love this theme so much but it often gets overlooked I feel, probably because the boss is somewhat hidden and not easy to reach.

Just a dew more thoughts i had while watching the video: - The second ohase score reminds me a lot of mysic in Team ICO games - The strings in the first phase are extremely similar to the background score for Leyndell. For me they evoke a very strong feeling of sorrow and mourning, but in sort of a resteained and defeated way. - I might be way off base but a lot of the instruments have an eastern/east-asian sound tonthem, which stands in pretty heavy contrast to the western orchestral sound that Fromsoft usually goes for. As you mentioned this helps five a sense of a fantasy culture, but I think in the game it also serves to separate it from the modern culture of the Erdtree era, and cements it as an urterly different and more ancient culture

This theme sounds to me like nature itself. The Tarnished (humans) disturbing an ancient creature existing way long before us, peacefully (nature), trying to kill it. Thus the sad music in the 1st 'phase'. When 2nd 'phase' enters, it reminds me that, again, nature will always find a way of continuing to exist no matter what cause it sounds to me more promising rather than sad which the 1st phase was. (it doesnt matter that we kill the spirit in game :P). The enemies guarding the arena and the animals accompanied by them and the whole environment of this area makes me think of that when it comes to an explanation of the track and the boss. Now back to the actual fight, beautiful colors, kinda 'ghosty' and a very nice design of the actual boss. One of my favorite tracks, truly magnificent and haunting in a beautiful way.

i have no idea how this hasent happened yet, but you need to check out literally any theme from the terraria calamity mod! their all great, some even including lyrics. some very popular ones for people to check out are 1: stained, brutal calamity. 2: roar of the jungle dragon, and 3: devourer of gods nonstop mix. for stained brutal calamity, you can find the lyrics in the description (their a bit hard to make out in the song unless your reading along, but tell a story sorta). honestly i recommend checking out the whole soundtrack since 1: their just all great, and 2: alot of them are a great example of finding loop points in songs like you talked about in prior videos

If you're looking for another Elden Ring boss theme to react to, I'd vote for Godfrey or Malenia

It's a bit out of the zone of what you'd usually do, but I highly you take a look at the Furi soundtrack. "Make this right" and "My Only Chance" specifically are songs I'd highly recommend, I'd love to see how you'd tackle them.

Hey Davi, i know you dont usually take the requests of one person, But i thought it would be really cool to see you react to a song from one of my favorite games gravity rush. Its also has one of my favorite soundtracks and i really want to see you react to Night gale, or Angel. I love the vid btw keep it up❤❤❤

Easily one of my favorite scores in elden ring, if not my absolute favorite. I always felt it was such a shame this boss is so easy, people blaze right through it and never get to hear the beautiful music in full (or experience the cool boss phases).

It was only in my most recent playthrough that I got to hear the full theme in game.

Something I only thought of recently regarding the 'fake-outs' in Soulsborne games, the more mellow parts tend to play continuously until you get the boss to their second phase, and then the more bombastic music starts when the bosses step it up. When the music is just put out on its own with both phases playing one after the other it appears as a fake out, but in the games, depending on how powerful you are compared to the boss you may or may not even hear parts of the song, like I always kill this boss pretty quickly, so I've barely even heard parts of this song. Sorry if that came off like gibberish, I've been suffering a lot of headaches lately, so expressing thought has been a bit blegh lately.

@DaviVasc I think you should do 14.3 Billion years from Outer Wilds. It is an amazing song and I think it would be great on your channel. Love your content!

I have a few suggestions you should definitely do: The One Reborn (Bloodborne), Beast Clergyman (Elden Ring), Pontiff Sulyvahn (Dark Souls III), Godfrey, First Elden Lord (Elden Ring)

Don't know if you tried Armored Core VI but you should really listen to some of its OST particulary the Balteus Theme 😄

Just a point of understanding and acceptance. Tribal =/= primitive. We tend to associate the two because it was more prevalent in the past, but such peoples, cultures, and music still exist, and despite all we wish to admire the evolution of music, it’s folly to say one form of it is greater or lesser than another. That said, I know you didn’t mean it in that way. Wonderful video as always

Dude, The Regal Ancestor Spirit is so distracting in the best way. It sounds like no other boss in the game and is the most memorable. Seriously, give this composer an award for Most Beautiful Track.❤️

This track is straight out of a Ghibli film, like Princess Mononoke.
