If you'd like to continue listening to and/or reacting to Celeste music, some good ones to analyse are 'Resurrections' (Track 3) and 'Confronting Myself' (Track 16). Truly fantastic pieces in my opinion- I'd love to know what you think. They differ greatly from these previous two pieces as far as I can tell. I would also say that the word you may have been trying to think of throughout the video for the negative feelings and disturbing chords together could be 'sinister'.

To those who haven't played Celeste, know that the music gets exponentially better as you play the game cause they stick to the places and the vibe of the game perfectly. You really FEEL the music in this game. Reach for the summit and Resurrections are also great ones to react to. Can't wait! Though the soundtracks are so long it might be tricky to make videos on them
@GFBFishscratch

The buildup and familiarity of each section of Summit had me absolutely enthralled, as my low dexterity stiff old man hands struggled to get me through them. Then we got to the final section, THAT music started up and they began the Countdown. Its a challenge to think of any moment in my life that got the hype and determination engine going more than that.
@GFBFishscratch

The way it had a Drive and such quick energy in the harmony but a slow, familiar, comfortable melody so you don't get frustrated at it all. The harmony is pushing you to go, do it, run and jump and reach, and achieve. But the melody is saying Hey, stumbling is fine because as long as you dont give up, you can keep going, and as long as you keep going you will get there.

Sensing the despair in the rambling drums at the switch to the final section is really amazing. Seeing the drums as explosive, chaotic emotion is one thing, but calling them out as despair is a really good read of what would call out such a drastic expression of emotion.

You are completely right about the progression of the song. There are three main sections of the level that you can complete in any order, and the song progresses after you complete each one. After you are done with all of them the main drop hits. Then the last section of the song (after the short quite part) plays during a boss fight

In Celeste, the piano is always present in the music, as it is the embodiment of Madeline, the protagonist. The synth is used to represent that “bad” Part of Madeline, the depressed, anxious one that comes to life when Madeline climbs the mountain. The clashing of these two instruments represents the internal and physical fight between these parts of Madeline. Other characters in the game also have instruments representing them.

Thank you so much for actually doing this one, your analysis was amazing! There's a lot going on in the track, so I'm impressed by what you noticed and inferred. So to give some background, this is indeed a level track (the game doesn't really have "bosses"), and it's where Madeline (you) comes across an old, worn down hotel. You are greeted by the ghost of the owner, who desperately hangs onto the hotel and wants you to stay a night. During the level, you help cleaning the hotel in 3 phases, which are reflected in the music. However, Oshiro (the owner) is starting to fall apart in his desperate attempts to let Madeline stay, and his head becomes progressively more chaotic, cluttered and "scattered and Lost", so the progressive chaos is indeed a reflection of someone's emotions, but it's Oshiro's emotions. The piano being drowned out is an interesting one, since I think I heard that the piano often is symbolic for Madeline. It would make sense for her to feel suffocated by the chaos and desperation of Oshiro. The rest of the level is also about Oshiro coming to terms with reality. The level and music both really reflect both Madeline and Oshiro's struggles and how they interact, and you've uncovered a lot of the essence, very well done! Anyways, that's my two cents. I heard others recommend "ressurections", and that's an amazing track as well!

The one thing I loved about the music in this game is the motifs that carried over from track to track, especially those that represent characters. You have to listen to the opening to Spirit and Hospitality to get where the last 2 mins of this song come from and understand that the 2 songs relate to 2 states of mind of the same character
@sauteedpotato

Dude your accuracy with your interpretations are on point. What’s crazier is how perfect all the tracks match their areas and points in the narrative respectively. Reach for the Summit starts with one of the most motivational and moving parts of a track that i’ve heard. When I heard the beginning of reach for the summit and realized it was the same melody from the prologue song I was like “cool” but then it kept building and building and it became such a good song.

Scattered and Lost was always one of my favourite songs in this game. I loved the way it portrayed the feeling of being disorganized and being a mess near the beginning where the notes are somewhat scattered, as it slowly cleans itself up, but unravels into more of a chaotic rage by the end of the song (which really fits well for the level it plays at). Resurrections is my other favourite song in that ost, and I highly recommend you check that one out too sometime

I gotta recommend Chicory: A Colorful Tale OST, also by Lena Raine! She uses a lot more live instruments and the close up and personal feeling gets even stronger. And if you think Celeste has some good musical story telling, Chicory just takes it to another level! For that, I have to recommend "uoY mA I", which is a really interesting song that builds it's theme really well. "Abandon Me" is also one of the most emotional tracks in the game. Or if you wanna just do one big song, "The Mountain Top" is one of the most amazing and beautiful credits tracks I've ever heard!"

Great video as always! I’ve been fascinated by Celeste music since I listened to Farewell on your video. This piece brings a floating feeling which reminds me of Super Mario Galaxy vibes somehow. This mellow vibe makes me sink into the deep sea of music, but also makes me unsettled. I feel as if I’m drifting through a complex mental world. The delicate piano melody, the spooky theremin sound, the striking drums . . . everything is exquisitely woven together to create an amazing piece. What a brilliant build up! You definitely described what happens in the level this plays in perfectly. In this part, the main character enters a long abandoned hotel, inhabited by only the ghost of Mr. Oshiro, who is stuck in the past, wishing that his hotel had guests again. He basically begs the main character to stay, but she declines, however since the only way to continue is by going through the hotel, Mr. Oshiro keeps trying to convince her. He gets more and more desperate and anxious about the poor state of the hotel, and his emotions cloud his senses. Eventually, once the main character gets to the room Mr. Oshiro wants her to stay in, she apologizes and says that she really just can't stay there. At the point where the frantic percussion kicks in, Mr. Oshiro loses his temper, turning into an angry monster and chasing the main character along the roof of the hotel. It's a disturbing song which tells a story about a disturbed individual who just wants some appreciation, but can't get over the fact that his hotel is so broken down.
@YOM2_UB

Also, each increment before then corresponds to cleaning up the hotel, which is more intense as it removes platforms where you can safely stand thus making the game incrementally harder.

scattered and lost was the first thing i heard of the celeste soundtrack, and i still really like it! it's an interesting thought about the positive piano vs negative synths; in-game, this song is layered to represent the player's progress and it gets more disturbing until that "explosion of negative emotions" you mentioned, it's cool that you picked up on that! you should try reacting to some of the fez soundtrack sometime! there's a lot of really compositionally interesting stuff in there, i like to describe it as "modal ambient".

The thing with the incriminating is spot on. When traversing through the „huge mess“ section, you have to free up big chunks of clutter and every time you do that, the track gets more exciting. Very well explained.

Also about the track becoming progressively disturbing, in this chapter you are in the hotel of a mentally ill ghost, who is slowly going insane and finally snapping, which is shown in a bossfight scene. It’s really impressive, that you can hear this kind of stuff without even knowing the game.

Man that was some intense gameplay collecting strawberries 😂. This is from chapter 3 and I really loved the layers of intensity it got throughout the hotel you’re in. For some quick context on what’s going on, you arrive in a hotel that’s run down, you meet a ghost that’s the owner Mr. Oshiro, who assumes you’re staying at the hotel but you’re just passing through, you get escorted to the best room, mr. Oshiro gets flustered at the state of the hotel but try’s to play it off only to lose hope and make it more cluttered, you help clean up to make it less cluttered which is what you hear throughout the song where it starts to get more synth heavy, later you find his dairy where his final entry shows his refusal to leave the hotel after it closes, you later find him trying to convince you stay only for your bad side to come and ruin everything saying it’s a terrible hotel which enrages him which you hear the drums and chaos part of song. I recommend listening to “quiet and falling” and “in the mirror” together. Thank you for doing this break down I’ll see you next video!

In the soundtrack of Celeste. The piano itself represents the main character you play as, Madeline, meanwhile the synth in the soundtrack usually represents stress, panic, depression, and anxiety. Interestingly enough though is that in this particular track, the negative emotions don’t belong to you. They belong to another Character you are assisting represented by the Theremin. For one of the first and maybe last times in the story of the game, Madeline is in complete control of her situation, however her help she’s trying to provide while being good help isn’t taken well by the person she’s trying to help, leading to his increasingly deteriorating emotional state, represented by the synth and theremin slowly drowning out the other sounds.

You were absolutely right about the buildup part, and the negative and positive forces battling too! If you want to fully understand please read this! Throughout the level you help a ghost hotel owner sort his problems with not accepting his death out, huge parts of the level are cluttered with his “problems” given form as ghostly matter and general mess like dirty towels and books considered to be problems hotel owners have to deal with (problems he creates for himself since his hotel is abandoned), and they get cleared out as you progress, and as you find out more about how messed up this guy’s mind actually got from dying but not accepting it. Ghost boo doesn’t want to be helped, and only gets more insecure as to why you won’t be his guest, that’s why the music gets more and more tense. The negative force is however not only the ghost. The “familiar melody” you talk about is usually portrayed by the synths and are actually your character’s self-doubts given form. This is where the chaos comes from, since while you’re trying to help this nice guy that’s really hard to deal with because of his problems, even when you are introverted to begin with, and your own problems are trying to push you back every step you take and literally telling you that helping this man is useless. I love Celeste’s music, and I hope you read this so you can understand this piece a little deeper too!

just if youre wondering, the main melody all throughout probably represents the whole level and the feelings in it, while the melody at 11:44 represents the character that appears in the level. Where the drums start is where this character gets mad, and a bossfight happens. The bossfight track has the main level melody in it + agressive and chaotic drums representing the enraged character. At 11:44 the melody of the character is heard, confirming its his fight and perhaps a slight link of "There is still a nice person under the enraged boss version of the character, " furthermore indicated by the absence of drums

If you're still taking recommendations, the Cuphead soundtrack is great. I especially like the expansion's "Baking the Wondertart" for its unusual but effective combination of influences.

The thing you mentioned about the piano melody being drowned out is a recurring theme, meant to represent anxiety. There's even another track in the game, aptly named Anxiety, that goes all out with this concept. I dunno if it's worth a full reaction video since it's a very small track with not much to it compared to other tracks in the game, but you should listen to it sometime if you haven't already!

You want good chaos in music. Listen to "Confidence in the Domination" from Valkyrie Profile. So good.

Another good Example of Souls Music I suggest you would be the Sir Alonne theme from ds2. Fun fact, he was a little hidden Boss in a Dlc which not everyone found at first and if you defeat him without getting hit, you got a special animation.

I would love a reaction to one or two dead cells soundtracks, I think "Keep off the flowers" or "Hand of the king" would be really cool

This level is definetly one that makes you feel desperate and anxious. It is also quite disturbing for the mc Madaline. So pretty spot on with the analysis!
