Game Composer Reacts to VALSTRAX Theme - Monster Hunter Rise

Crimson Glow Valstrax’s theme actually makes sense by a lore standpoint. Valstrax’s original theme was much more ‘heroic’ as some say. It felt like the embodiment of ‘Freedom.’ The nature of Valstrax was “Whoa! That things so cool! Let’s go follow it!” And the fight itself felt like a duel between two champions, the Hunter and Valstrax. In Rise however, the theme feels a bit more haunting? I think? It’s definitely faster and feels more ‘evil.’ This is meant to signify how Valstrax itself has become corrupted and gone insane due to the abnormal amount of Dragon Element in its body. Not just soaring across the sky but now actively attacking and raining terror upon the local wildlife. The Heroic vibes of the Red Comet still exist, but it’s slowly being tainted by the Crimson Glow inside of it. Or maybe I’m imagining things, I dunno

The flutes could also be a symbol of its wings, since it doesn't have the typical wings with membranes, it flyes like a rocket using its wings as reactors by expelling dragon energy through them

Crimson Glow Valstrax's theme is so cool. Probably my favorite theme overall in the whole game, just as it was in GU.

4:09 To me, the very stationary Bass sounds like a Jet Engine, just droning around. The Woodwinds meanwhile feel like the wind around you as you fly. This part really gives the sensation of being a Jet Plane. I loved the Super Sayian analogy XD

Monster Hunter has always had some of my favorite game soundtracks. It's one of the few franchises that has made me feel such intense music chills that I cry a little

You should react to Khezu's theme next. It's one of *the* best themes to have ever been made in Monster Hunter, and Rise did it some justice.

Valstrax's theme was truly amazing, I was wondering if you were going to react to the Serpents theme as well as Fatalis as well?

The early woodwinds part feels like there are small things that seem insignificant in the hunt's previous journeys that actually matters in the battle the shift from the "flying" to the combat with the hunter's theme is bridging the shift from a monster-focused theme to a piece full of things happening - what the hunter had faced before, his/her journey, successes and failures, tests and tribulations, and the long and arduous road finally come to fighting Valstrax in all its glory, in its crimson comet state (usually this time Valstrax will Ambush/Dive Bomb you, hence the "Crimson Comet" part"). It feels as if you're not fighting a monster anymore, you're fighting the heavens itself. Also, the up and down pattern feels like the music trying to portray the "vertical feel" of the battle, seeing Valstrax is depicted as living mostly in high areas and fights airborne, this part may make you imagine the dragon going up and down maneuvering like fighter jet dogfights. This should help improve MH's normal sensation that is filled with battles of horizontally for this hunt The "Fallen down" part feels so dramatic and epic because it can be interpreted in many ways: the hunter falling to the earth after being smitten by the dragon, the dragon's crashing descent as the crimson comet to end the hunter, or the comet dragon's falling descent from the heaven's grace after its defeat this piece is so emotional and invigorating I use it as my study BGM, also nice music visualization video, consider me subscribed :D

I've always held the MH music close to my heart, but listening to it along with your description actualizes those emotional connections and brings tears to my eyes. I'm so glad I've found your channel.

I never managed to get to the Valstrax fight, but each and every time I hear his theme, I just get this itch to go back and push through to him. And this new version just makes me excited to reach him in Rise!

I first listened to this after getting Rise (got Rise before GU, sadly) and the climax, in particular, fit the game's music motif so much. This drops and the vocal intro + the more tense percussive attacks just make it sound like I can finally catch up to Valstrax's speed instead of being overwhelmed by its godly maneuverability back in GU.

I feel like the rhythm sections you mentioned may also symbolize the way the hunter gets into the rhythm of the fight, learning the monster‘s moves and starting that dance to the death! Crimson Glow Valstrax‘ theme is so unique and awesome! It’s one of my favs in Rise, so heroic and literally uplifting!

Very nice interpretation! For me, right after the beginning (which is like it taking off) that slight pause that goes into the next section made me picture a sonic boom. The parts written get much faster, and much more intense. A while back, I actually did an arrangement of Valstrax's theme a few years ago for a theory assignment in college XD. It's such a good one! My professor also seemed to really enjoy it too!

Rise version has intimidating and restless vibes with higher tempo and fits perfectly with the fierce CRIMSON GLOW Valstrax! I like the cool intro and repeating the high point twice in this theme. Just like almost all other themes, this does a perfect work at incarnating the monster. You can feel a constant tension toward an indefinite point, you can feel the ascension of the elder dragon, you can feel the frenzy of the fight... The feelings just keep flowing while the rhythm just doesn't stop and it almost seems like constantly building up. What a theme!

From my perspective, the GU Valstrax sounds more heroic, while the MHR Valstrax feels more villainous. Like he's the fallen hero gone mad, but there's still hero's heart inside

Read an article about the musical trope of soaring in film and games for my music theory class and immediately thought of this video. Valstrax checks almost every box! The harp in the intro, the ascending leaps, the quick repetitive patterns played by a high pitched instrument (violins, woodwinds). It even mentioned soaring/flight pulling from themes of the mechanical and supernatural, which lines up perfectly with a rocket elder dragon. So cool!!

When I first heard this in Gen Ultimate, I fight the monster just to hear the theme because I loved it so much.

This Is pretty accurate to CG Valstrax and his downfall to Demise due excessive Dragon Energy through his body And This makes me want a specific request Can you make a reaction / analysis to Brutish Indigo Rage? The Raging Brachydios Theme from Iceborne, the difference with the Classic Brave Icon - Brutish Indigo Theme could be something interesting :)

Crimson Glow Valstrax, Chameleos, and Allmother Narwa are my top 3 songs from this game its just so magical and has some wonder to the themes

I think that 4:38 is like a Hunter tries to get a grip of himself, like you finally catch up with the Valstrax, but before you realize, it was the moment Valstrax soar up up in the sky leaving you hanging on its back.

yea and thats it what i like about monster hunter they put so much detail and love into the music. I assume they incraeasing the music speed because the game is faster paced than in the previous versions. to give u that feeling and i think it works your mind is kinda syncing with the music i tried it out with and without the music and i play worse without the music. I like the love for the details. Im excited about the Monster Hunter Wilds music!!

Valstrax is the superman of the Monster Hunter universe and it knows it. nothing gets me more than fighting a monster and hearing the Valtrax intro play just to have it fly right into the monster im fighting.

I personally would suggest doing a reaction video of the magala themes (gore magala, shagaru magala, and chaotic gore magala, in that order). The main thing that is interesting about these themes is that these monsters are all related, with shagaru being an evolution of gore.

I love the fact that, if CG Valstrax uses his "Ambush" or "Crimson Comet Crash" move the music just cuts out when he crashes into the ground and you just hear an ear ringing sound, which is just absolutely awesome.

Fighting this monster is so tense.

you should check out its ambush move and how that pairs by silencing the music and using the ringing sounds like something exploded in your ears.

I remember after beating the first narwa fight (pls no spoilers as this was very recent), me and a friend thought we could take on anything and went after a crimson glow, we did not last long but the one thing I got out of that fight was that the music slaps

His theme has the perfect amount of texture seriously one of the best themes in monster hunter imo. Love it in gu and rise but I personally prefer gu. I think if you haven't already take a look at bloodbath diablos theme.

Okay, now I need to know your thoughts on Ibushi, Narwa, and Narwa the Allmother's themes.

Please do a breakdown on Cold Blues and Flaming Red (volcano map theme).

Funny thing about the title: the Red Comet. In a famous mecha series in Japan known as Gundam, there is a character called Char Aznabel, who had this title long before Valstrax came about. I mention this because Char is known as a master pilot able to overtake and decimate the opposition in sub-standard gear, especially the main hero who despite being a complete beginner, is a natural prodigy with superior equipment. I feel like this song is drawing a parallel to that and Valstrax and the Hunter, while the Hunter has taken down many monsters in their career, each deadlier than the last, they’re now forced into a aerial combat against Valstrax: the master of the sky itself. Maybe that’s just me looking too deep into it, but with Gundam being such an important cultural icon in Japan and Monster Hunter coming from the same country, I can’t help but draw parallels and see where the inspiration comes from in the the mecha series, the monster and the music.

That second rhythmic section, where you pointed out the woodwinds, I think that's reflective of Valstrax's most infamous attack - Around the World. Valstrax takes off high into the air, so high that all you can see is the glow from his wings, making him look like a crimson comet or shooting star. There, he races around the sky, showing off his aerial mobility and speed, and his icon on the map will be all over the place. This lasts several precious seconds that you should be using to run, because at the end of it, Valstrax dives to Earth once more with a disastrous blast of Dragon energy, destroying or crippling any hunter or small monster caught in the catastrophe. A dramatic rise, followed by the woodwinds circling around one another, looping and playing in spritely fashion, followed by a tense rest and a sudden and violent crash back into some melancholy notes, reflecting the hunters picking themselves up off the ground or recovering from the living Tunguska event that just literally dropped on their heads. But the fight's not over, the heroic chords start rising, the beat picks up, and the melody begins again.

You should definitely react to MHWI alatreon theme It really is great, i always thought that the theme really rappresents well the hunt, what you are facing lore wise, and also brings back memories from mhtri with some takes

I think the faster version of the theme kinda helps seperate the crimson glow subspecies. Where regular Valstrax is happy to just fly about at speed too fast for itself to perceive, only really doing damage on accident or if provoked. Whereas the crimson glow has gone mad with power, and has become activelt malicious. Which, when you think about it, is kinda sad. Valstrax is a magnificent creature to behold, and to see it reduced to something... less.

valstrax is probably not only my favorite monster hunter monster, but pretty much my favorite fictional creature in any media. it's a fucking jetpack dragon, i love it
