Game Engine Popularity in 2024

The Global Game Jam just wrapped up for 2024 and an interesting part of that is we can see which game engines developers used to create their games. Better still, Godot project manager Rémi Verschelde has been tracking data annually, so we can not only see what game engines are most popular (for game jams) in 2024, but also how it has changed year over year.

Quick Note at 7:11, it was said that Unreal went from 7.68% to 9.38%, but this is backwards. Unreal went from 9.38% to 7.68% (an 18.1% drop-off) just as Unity went from 61.23% to 36% (a 41.2% drop-off).

Not sure why people seem to think UE5 is a bad choice for a game jam, you can get something decent done extremely fast with all the built-in functionality and stick to only BPs if you want to avoid the headaches of C++
@PretendCoding
@PretendCoding 6 месяцев назад
@@GS-tk1hk I think the biggest reason is the requirements to run it. If we had to present on some random laptop, it would have run poorly, and because it was a jam, we didn't exactly optimize much. With Godot, I can make something pretty similar and because of the by-default less system requirements, it'd be more likely to run better on a supplied computer if that were the case. It's not super easy to minimize the size of packaged UE builds because of some frankly dumb decisions on epic's part (like including the giant convolution texture used in bloom, even on a mobile build), and a lot of people don't know much about setting up the config files or anything about cvars.

@@KomodoBitGames What lol? With utmost respect etc, honestly both of you should take a step back from whatever you are basing this view on and objectively look at both languages, they're 95% the same, you make it sound like its Python vs Basic or something. I have the feeling you've looked at _different pieces of code by different people_ in both languages and assumed that there was a bunch of difference between them because of the language, but instead of that the differences were because of the different coders/goals/structure/whatever. Its essentially the same things with C# just having a little more helper functions etc & C++ just having a little more performance, so if you want it easier you pick C# and if you want faster code you pick C++ but you can apply the same design principles to both, most functions are the same, most code can be directly moved between them without changes, etc etc.

As an Unreal developer, I think the low popularity in Game Jams is due to Unreal not having a WebGL or Web Assembly export like Unity and Godot do. At some point Unreal had the HTML5 canvas thing, but they removed that in favor of their stupid pixel streaming thing. Are they stupid? I still love Unreal, but not having a WebGL export is something that grinds my gears.

You could have done the math quicker, there are 200 pages of games so you just have to divide by 2 the pages to get the percentage. Also remember during the GGJ Godot users are forced to use Unity because it often occurs in schools and the team are often premade between students and sometimes it is advised by their Unity teachers to participate. Ludum Dare which is done remotely gives a more accurate percentage. Personally I have stopped participating at the GGJ because there are two many Unity students, I had to be an artist to join them but now I want to improve my programming skill. And I think many Godot users don't participate for that reason too.

As someone working on 2D games in unreal, the biggest hudel for unreal and game jams is it's awful 2D tools... The tilemap system has been a beta preview forever, and is a buggy mess, trying to get animtion to work and render properly... Why the skittle am I using Unreal for 2D games you ask? Because kids LOVE blueprints. If Unreal would just realize how much k-12 kids love working in blueprints and would add some 2D featurs the number of kids learning unreal in school would balloon and the number of unreal devs would skyrocket over a geneartion I have no doubt. Especially since a lot of kids actually really like 2D game. 3D stuff is cool, but 2D, especially 2D pixel which is the worst in unreal is often what really inspires them to learn, because then they can make the art themselves.

When participating in game jams and other timed events with theme constraints, developers typically use the game engine they are most familiar with in order to work quickly and meet the schedule. Using Unity is also understandable given its high adoption rate unaffected by its ridiculous runtime fees model. Although these statistics do not directly correlate to commercial usage, they give a glimpse into each engine's 'status' and 'trend'. Unity remains supremely easy for development, but Godot is gradually taking its place. As developers gain more experience with Godot over time, it may eventually surpass Unity in popularity. Unreal's unique development philosophy, architecture and workflow - along with its higher hardware requirements - means it will likely take more time to see gains in adoption rate. But this does not undermine its position as a top professional-grade technology.

For example there are only a handful of RPG Maker games that have been submitted to GGJ but it wasn't the case in SteamDB. Though a game usually takes several years to make so it is not exactly correct at the moment, but it's still relevant.

Unity is still a useful literal tool, but garbage execs and board-directors who only focuses on quarterly bonuses then move on to other companies to hunt for more quarterly bonuses. Unity also has tons of 🏴‍☠ which many including I use alot. As long as you don't buy/pay/support them it's all cool.

If Godot had a feature like IL2CPP to convert its C# scripts into C++, I think most Unity developers would've migrated to Godot
@saul8510
@saul8510 6 месяцев назад
True though you can do c++ in godot yourself with gdextension
@containedhurricane

@@saul8510 Yes, but scripting with C++ in Godot is way more difficult than using C#. It would've been better if Godot had something like IL2CPP and DOTS

Sorry, despite my best effort to convince our programmer to try Godot he insisted on using Unity. Don't have the final say in these things as a lowly artist.
