We already know the answer to that. Super Mario Bros. 1 was the result of them trying to defend themselves - their race was pretty much genocided. If you read the story, you'll know that Bowser had won. He turned every inhabitant into bricks to build his new conquered kingdom, and Toadstool/Peach was the only one who could reverse that spell, which was why he initially kidnapped her. Not to marry her. Not to make her his wife. But so she couldn't undo what he did. In Mario 1, Bowser had wiped out the Mushroom Kingdom and the people living there. That's why the Mario brothers are such heroes. With his brother Luigi, they reversed it. They saved Peach and brought back the Mushroom race. That's ACTUALLY the story of Mario 1.
