I like how after this entire freakout about Arin complaining how obvious the tower's layout are, we see in the trial he's technically STILL wrong (not saying that as a bad thing per say. The twist behind the layout of the towers is something I overlooked too, and I'm sure many others did considering how convoluted it all is).
Yeah it does add a little extra entertainment watching arin lose his mind over them driving home a point he considers so obvious when you know the actual reason they were doing that was just to set up the twist for later
Arin's entire schtick over the Danganronpa series has been getting mad over nothing and then being wrong and then him and all the people in the comments going "well uhmmmmmmm technically it's the GAME'S fault"
@@THENAMEISQUICKMAN That's literally Game Grumps in a nutshell though. They do that with every game. Really it's a wonder they have any confidence to say anything. But you know
my favorite part is that it actually is not the case. like all this extremely obvious shit is being figured out in excrutiating detail to make you feel like "I GET IT ALREADY" only for it to not even be the fucking case and two of the doors being fucking fake
It's a good bit of misdirection. Just keep repeating the misinformation until the player internalized it. And then reveal the twist later. The problem is it means a loooot of excruciating stupid writing as it repeats itself a lot in a short window.
This is actually a horrible tactic: Repeatedly pointing out the seemingly obvious in hopes of misdirecting the player so the now even more obvious Plottwist will surprise them. Like you can almost always tell the accused person in a Danganronpa murder case is innocent because of how much they focus on them being the prime suspect (e.g. Yasuhiro in DR1 case 3-4, Himiko in almost all cases of DR3 etc.) Conversely the characters suddenly act really stupid when an important clue that ties up the whole case together should not be brought up again until the trial as major evidence. The pinnacle of this is the hilariously obvious 11037 clue that was memed to oblivion because of how stupid everyone reacted to something anyone who remotely knows the latin-script alphabet should've figured out immediately.
@@solidzack I completely agree with you. They only needed to state this information twice max. And then during the trial someone could say "How is that [new information] possible if they're the same tower?" And then boom, Hajime and the others collectively discuss their findings to determine they assumed wrong.
@@solidzack well to be fair, as you said, the 11037 clue is incredibly obvious to anyone who knows a Latin-based alphabet. But this game was originally in Japanese, so while you can assume that most of the characters have some knowledge of English (IIRC English is a required class in Japanese highschool), you can't guarantee that they would make that connection considering their first language would not include that alphabet. Granted you still have a good point, I just felt the need to defend that one specifically as a possible issue with translation causing a potential plot hole. Also worth noting that I have never played the games, so I might just be being an idiot.
@@althelor Language isn't the issue here: if you can't read the Latin alphabet this "clue" doesn't help you either way. But even if you only slightly knew the Latin alphabet you should see the solution intuitively. Humans are quite good at pattern recognition. It doesn't matter if something is rotated a certain amount of degrees, you should still be able to easily recognize what it's supposed to represent. Even if chapter 1 taught you to read a different alphabet, just rotating the message by 180 degrees doesn't really make it that more difficult. It would've made more sense of it was typed into a calculator or something to actually mislead the player, although even that wouldn't be sufficient. But the biggest issue isn't that the hint was just obvious, but that it was a spoiler to the entire chapter. Even then it would've been ok if Makoto wasn't that dense and spent most of the trial struggling to find out who was the culprit while the player knew way before the trial started. To me Chapter 1 of Danganronpa is conceptually the best out of all games. It had a really good motivation for the protagonist to try his hardest in the trial despite being untalented, it had a good twist of the victim being actually the culprit/traitor, the execution is still the most spine chilling and agressive one and the mystery would've been awesome since the other clues were sufficient enough to pinpoint Leon as the culpri. This single error throws it all out the window by spoiling the solution early on
What could 11037 possibly mean!? It's just so hard to figure out, what a mysterious clue the victim left in her last moments. If only it was the fucking name of someone here
So, let me get this straight. There's a 16th student lying hidden somewhere in this school… the one they call the Ultimate Despair? I should watch out for her.
Sweet precious little marshmallow cinnamon roll Chiaki Nanami, flipping out and losing her goddarn mind on her idiot classmates who cannot grasp the concept of going through a door. So perfect.
To enjoy Danganronpa, you have to be willing to put up with a significant amount of BS repeating dialogue. I think it's to avoid leaving players behind in case they weren't paying attention. I can tolerate this no problem, but others (such as Arin) might have trouble. Visual novels are quite dialogue-heavy already, so you have to really like the characters to enjoy this game, so you can just squee over how cute your fave is before she dies. I'm not bitter.
the trick is to be playing the game by yourself so you can just skim over everything and rapidly click through most of the dialogue at your own comfortable reading pace, and Not be playing it on a lets play where you feel obligated to read every single line and voice all the characters. if they weren't recording episodes and just playing the game on their own they'd probably fly through the game, get each chapter done in a couple days Including all the free time events, and still be finished way sooner
I mean the whole reason they do it is that it was a PSP title and designed to be picked up, played for like 20-30 minutes on a bus right or maybe an hour or two here and there. So they threw in a lot of repeats to really drill in information you might forget if its only mentioned once. It can be annoying if your playing it in like big chunks but also... Like Arin misses so much information and completely forgets shit so fast that clearly the game doesn't repeat enough.
@@Murrytmds Thats what i figures when i played the games back when they dropped on vita so I didnt mind much. But its so funny to see them freak out over it cause they are recording 5+ 45 minute episodes in one session
Considering Arin STILL does his usual "what the fuck how would I have ever known this" bullshit despite the fact he can't go a single episode out of like a hundred insisting he knows everything already
As much as I love this game I totally understand why people would criticize the dialogue, so The Grumps complaining never bothered me, it just makes the experience funnier!
There was another comment here that said it nicely: "It's much less irritating when you're playing on your own." Don't get me wrong, the danganronpa games are the epitome of *repetitive,* no denying that, but I do think it's far more bearable when you can read at your own pace. I doubt Arin reading and doing voices with another person to an audience is the most calming thing. That said, Dan and Chiaki are the only things keeping him even remotely sane and I'm all here for it.
@@drumo2273 To be fair, the reason it's repetitive is for the same reason that speeches are repetitive. It helps drill the information into your mind and makes it easier to remember. This makes sense to do in a mystery game like Dangonronpa.
“I’m gonna get you out of here, because I’m gonna kill myself.” Is a really funny line considering the statue of a certain character present in the building.
What's funny is I never noticed the repetitive dialogue while I was playing it. I'm so used to visual novel and detective games that I pay heavy attention to what each character is saying in case it gives me a clue for later.
It's only bad when you read everything out loud. when you read in your head you usually don't vocalize every single word, you just glance at the sentence and move on so it goes WAY quicker and doesn't seem as cheesy
WAIT WAIT WAIT! But if what ends up being revealed in the trial is true.....doesn't that mean....that this ENTIRE GROUP of like 10 people.....were too stupid to LOOK UP and see the other doors to Strawberry house?
This is HANDS DOWN a highlight of their playthrough, greatest hits of all time. Its so completely ridiculous, especially when its proven completely wrong in the trial lmao
Hey Billy, what was your favorite part of the Danganronpa 2 playthrough? I really like the part where every single character points out the obvious for a looooong time!
Having played the game years ago watching those two lose their fucking minds about how obvious the situation was... well it was hilarious. They really went hard onto "DUH IT HAS TO BE THIS WAY" when the fact is that considering they were going to /that much effort/ to establish the seemingly obvious layout should have been a big clue that it wasn't how it seemed. They keyed in really quick to how Mekamaru drawing attention to his sleep timer meant it was going to play a part in the trial but then just.. missed this entirely.
Arin and acting like a smartass only to be completely wrong but then still insisting he was right and somehow the game was wrong when the game decides what is right and wrong, name a better duo
I mean, either way, if it’s how it really worked or not its still bad writing. For straightforward people, like gamegrumps here, they’re going to be annoyed having to read the same thing worded slightly differently multiple times, and for more analytical people they’re going to get suspicious of how often and how in-depth the game is going in describing the tower.
They're not saying that the answer is obvious, they're saying that the game repeats any concept or idea through repetitive dialogue, which causes them to go crazy, cuz by this point this is the 4th or 5th time that they've shoved the same dialogue or idea down the player's throats. It's just funny. Hahaha
I agree with the comments saying playing this for an audience makes it a very different experience. Playing it on your own you can just fly through all the repetitive dialogue and not think twice about it, but when you’re voicing out all the dialogue and have to go at a steady pace for the viewers’ sake, the drawn out dialogue is certainly something.
I'm glad you clipped this because this might be my favorite Arin moment of all time, just watching the poor man lose the last shred of his goddamn mind, while speaking through Chiaki.
Arin: this game is too smart for me Also Arin: *refuses to read in game instructions, preferring to whine all the way through the investigation and trial, pretending the game wasn't already trying to hand hold Arin through his own A.D.H.D*
Love coming back to this. Really perfectly expresses my love/hate relationship with this game. The love being for the grumps exclusively. Im so glad im not alone in hating that they are playing the third game right now (summer 2024). Guess ill go outside on weekends or something...
I think the reason why it was repeated so much is because the way the elevator was placed it was strange because if it was a normal elevator the towers would be on the opposite side of the building
"Chiaki, it's called a 'porte' in French because it trans(port)s you from one place to another, in English it is called a (port)al because it is derived from the word 'porta' which in Latin means door, 'portalis' which in medieval Latin means 'like a gate' and finally, before late middle English, 'portal' from old French means 'gate' or 'gateway'" -Danganronpa character probably
They were at such a risk of spoiling the twist. I actually didn’t see it coming! Kind of glad that I talk myself out of that possibility. The reveal was a shock to me.
What is it with the Arin hate? I've never understood why I can't go into a comment section of game grumps without seeing people simping over Dan and hating Arin
Because Arin actively complains while Dan, who also complains, also has shown to be a little interested to the storyline/some of the characters so it somehow cancels out his complaints
@@LG_Hakubi i disagree, arin, obviously likes people like chiaki and both were equally excited to see monokuma again. There are probably more moments but i cant think of any off the top of my head, but point is, Arin (while complaining about the game) is probably enjoying it for how ridiculous it is.
I cannot wait for these two to play and deal with the insanity of the third game. Idk if that’ll be 3 or v3 but ether way it’ll be crazy and fucking funny
My problem with chapter 4 of this game in general was the overly repetitive dialogue and a convoluted case. The amount of times I heard "grape" or "strawberry" tower was...ooh boy 😅
Ive never played DR2 so this playthrough was my first experience....but when i got to this part...i had to drop it as it was driving me crazy too. But seeing the comments that the trial proves the entire thing wrong maybe I can pick this back up
I think the writers of this scene were just reeeeeeeeally hungry, specifically for strawberries and grapes, and just wanted an excuse to write about the fruit they were craving.
I mean the funny part is, none of this super obvious shit is actually true even a little bit. Like that’s the best part of the funhouse trial, but I forgot how obvious they had to make it so you can even catch the base assumption
I do get a little annoyed with the fact that arin is literally the exact person they needed to repeat the dialogue so much for yet he also gets the angriest about it. Like he forgets shit immediately after it’s said in every single episode and yet never seems to put it together that him and others like him being like that is why the game keeps repeating stuff
I get it, I truly do get it. But visual novels sort of have to do this! And when they slow down and explain something repeatedly like this, it’s because something convoluted or unexpected is coming and you should pay attention (they did not pay attention and were confused by the twist)
Is that a surprise (that they don't pay any attention and end up confused by then end)? I think ending up confused for not paying attention is Game Grump's ultimate skill...
this part ended up confusing the hell out of me and I ended up thinking they weren't the same until they came to that conclusion because of how they were fucking talking. like I knew and then they started talking and my iq just dropped
XD yeah I get the Grumps don’t really pay much attention ( somewhat Dan he actually is the type of player who is interested in a game’s story ), but even I lost my mind XD Besides, not like it’s the first time anyone has ever forgotten info or didn’t pay attention to a video game or DR games in general.
Especially when they're not playing the game for like 4-8 hours a day, they're likely doing other stuff, and playing other games. Things get jumbled up, especially when they take a break from the godawful writing after a while. XD
I was forced to sit in a discord call and play danganropa with my friends and I’m so serious when I say this, it gave me the worst migraine I’ve ever gotten in my entire life. This game is just 15 hours of special ed kids stating what things are.
…in hindsight, it’s odd that Chiaki of all people would be the one to lead all others to believe a wrong interpretation of the building layout. Wouldn’t she know?
She is just stating "the obvious" they were trying really hard to make the players understand something is off without straight out stating it. Every time Danganronpa goes on an hour long explanation of something obvious it's because something is up. Like saying under the table 50 times to hopefully make you realise the floor isn't the only thing under the table or in this instance to give you enough time to ask if that's really the only possibility for the structure because if it's trivial why are they even thinking about it? And then people get angry and say the logic makes no sense and it's all for dumdums but they get to the trial and have no idea who did what and how and push buttons until the game reveal it. The only way to really enjoy Danganronpa is to sit before the trial, go over the evidence alone and try to solve it. This here and Nagito making a scene about jumping down into Hajime's face later are the clues that let you figure out the "ultimate weapon of the fun house" without seeing the outside of the building. But then most players do what Arin did and get angry at the game because Nagito was "withholding vital information"
AS a veteran of the world war that is Chapter 04, the fruit hell, I was hoping their reaction to this accursed place would be biblical. I'm not disappointed.
This game induces despair into their players by making the characters say the dumbest shit at every second. This is the true conspiracy of why the game was made. XD
