‪@GameGrumps‬
It's officially one year since the game grumps played Santa clause 3: the escape clause on the channel, and as such one year since Danny spoke about House of Leaves. His description of it and the stream of comments on the video recommending the book made me order a copy immediately.
For the first time in my adult life, I was terrified by a piece of media.
There's more to the story that maybe one day I'll share, but without this singular moment - without Dan's brief comments on the book - things would be very different.

The fact that Arin phrased it in that particular way, and in such a cartoonishly exaggerated tone, make me suspect he knew exactly the reference he was making.

This comment got me lmao. Whether you’re reading the pseudo-intellectualism of Zampanò or a Johnny screed the border between reality, perceived reality, and pure delusion is blurred.

The book fucks with you by describing a journey through a labyrinth, while becoming a labyrinth visually.

For those unfamiliar with the book, if you love horror and mystery and surrealism and lots of detail and world building, I highly recommend this book. Fair warning; it is a beast of a novel with several layers to the narrative, the literal reflection of the labyrinthian House depicted through text structure, and an over 100 page index + appendix (provided the purchase of an unabridged copy). It’s certainly not for the faint of heart, but as a slut for both horror literature and academic writing, I think I’d personally consider it the best book I’ve ever read. PS: Whether or not it was intended, the book also makes for a wonderful bludgeon to counteract the ever present feeling of being stalked in the shadows you will inevitably feel after reading it. Something worth keeping in mind especially for those before-bed readers.

@@JohnSothis may be wrong, but i am pretty sure the person did not mean a literary or psychological defense that would be revealed in the book, i think they meant the book is hefty enough that you could use its weight to defend yourself against the nightmares the book would evidently give you. lololol

While I agree, there is a whole genre akin to it: Ergodic Literature. Nabokov's "Pale Fire" comes to mind, which must have served as an inspiration for Zampanó. The extensive (albeit satirical) footnotes and endnotes remind me of David Foster Wallace. The multiple points of view are very modernist, reminiscent of Virginia Woolf. The found media aspect taps into the cultural zeitgeist of the late 90s, rife with reality shows that used raw, surveillance-style footage, the Russian roulette that was the pre-Y2K internet-which now, when explored through the internet archive, feels more like coded messages from a fallen technotopia than its pimply teenage stage-and films like "The Blair Witch Project," which emphasized the fear of the unknown, the supernatural, and untamed nature. Despite its horror and experimental style, "House of Leaves" is uniquely accessible, forgiving, and strangely uplifting. Everyone should experience it at least once without prejudice and fully immerse themselves in its narrative. They should give in to its obsession, perhaps even believe the story is somehow manifesting in their own lives.

I appreciate when someone can describe an experience in a very subjective manner, a lot of the times when I see analysis of things that are supposed to be affecting, people never dwell on the effect without getting too personal, I like this middle ground, where we can explain that it was horrifying but not go into detail, because hell is a personalized place, and when you peer into the darkness your nightmares will look like no one else’s, but you would be lying if the word you used was anything other than nightmare.

one thing to note about the book, just on the off chance that like, you decide to read that book as part of a book club with another person is that the the book, especially the first half is VERY horny. Not in like a "vaugely erotic euphemisms for eldritch horrors" kind of way. In a "narrator spends a lot of time talking about the amount of sex he has and also this one stripper he's in love with" way.

I've been meaning to read it for quite some time but I feel like it will just destroy me mentally. I've suffered from depression and OCD all my life and also live in an old family house that is kinda falling apart and has a lot of dark history to it, and it's just plain creepy, it feels like a cage in the worst way. But I'm planning to finally move out this year, so I'm gonna hold out for a bit before starting this book.

I found it really freaky at the start (to the point where walking around my house alone became a little nerve wracking thanks to some of the ramblings from Johnny) but as I read more I became less afraid and more invested in what was going on. Ironically similar to what will navidson goes through; his curiosity overpowers his terror

Its very much a book that requires you to seriously COMMIT to it, which results in a very high bar of entry considering the way that it’s structured, but to me that’s also exactly how it fully ensnares you into its web and starts making you feel like your becoming paranoid like johnny. I can acknowledge it is ABSOLUTELY not for everyone, but if you like the specific themes, literary contexts, and overall just experimentation with the medium of literature, then it can be an extremely immersive and rewarding horror experience.
