GAME MAKER: STUDIO 3D - RESIDENTIAL MAP TEST

This is pretty similar to the previous video on this map, but I'm very happy how this turned out. The map itself has been ~ 70 hours of work, most of which in the creation & modeling of specific models & textures. The goal of this project has really only been to see how closely I could replicate my real life neighborhood. It's unlikely that I will turn this into any sort of game, but I may change my mind. Regardless, I think it turned out well!

At first glance I thought this was made with Unity 3D, but are you serious? Game Maker: Studio? That's beyond amazing.

I think this just goes to show the power that GM:S is capable of, especially with the right skill set. It's just a shame how much more difficult it is to create something of equal results with Unity in GM:S.

Game Maker is actually an extremely powerful engine but get's a bad rap because of the simplified programming language and how much asset flip crap get's made with either pirated copies or the free versions of the pre-studio versions

@machimanta
@machimanta 9 лет назад
Using GM (what the engine in the video is using), skeletal animations/animations and general aren't natively supported unfortunately. There are work-around's and tricks you can do to implement animations, but nothing ideal. If you really want to get right into decently looking 3D fast, I'd probably recommend something like Unity, as it supports pretty much all aspects of 3D you'd really need.

Question: Which would be simpler to do when developing a small 3D game in the nature of Pokemon X & Y, GameMaker Studio or Unreal Engine 4? I mean, UE4 is powerful and all, but it's not really an FPS or a Physics-heavy game that we're talking about here, just a turn-based RPG with 3D meshes instead of sprites. Would the hassle of getting Gamemaker to 3D be much more demanding than getting up to speed of what UE4 demands, which includes proficiency in C++?
@MrBountyhunter4

@machimanta
@machimanta 9 лет назад
LinkMasterM7 I use the pro version. The main difference is just the extent of extra features and functions you can utilize. Like, with the lite edition, you can't do any 3D. Then there are things like extended draw calls, etc., (which are very useful) which you also can not use. And, I'm not sure if it's still this way or not, but I'm pretty sure the lite edition had the GM/YYG logo plastered onto your game.. which I'm not sure if you'd want. If you are seriously considering using GM, I would recommend buying one of the advanced packages. They go on sales quite often, also.

BTW dynamic shadows come included :3

Is this played in a NASA PC? I'm struggling to do 3D stuff, easy and nice 3D stuff, not using complex models (most of the time not using models at all, just flat squares), not illumination, fog... my PC is medium and it lags as hell when I put some squares and cubes, it's absurd... I boosted the performance in lot of ways but still nothing, and now I see this Q_Q
@machimanta
@machimanta 4 года назад
If you use a bunch of d3d_ objects your game will inevitably lag a ton because its actually very inefficient. Every individual d3d_draw_... function adds overhead to the GPU. These are called draw calls, and it's not necessarily the total number of polygons that is the performance bottleneck, but rather the number of draw calls. This demo only has two draw calls for the entire level, one for the environment and one for the foliage, because the entire map is baked into only two models. This is how you can do stuff like this in GM
@LegendarySSSparda
@LegendarySSSparda 4 года назад
@@machimanta i dont understand It. U say u only do 2 calls, but the plants are moving. Models cant move. Each plant has to be a separate model so you can make the wind move It. Arent they tons of d3d-model-draw? Thanks for the response!!
@machimanta
@machimanta 4 года назад
Raziel Lewach Models can move using vertex shaders
@LegendarySSSparda
@LegendarySSSparda 4 года назад
@@machimanta Hoooooly sh... that's another crazy level! My mental sanity won't handle that xDDD Also I don't know if I can use the "shaders to move models" to animate characters (arms, legs)... sounds crazy and too much at this moment QAQ I still don't understand it. "What consumes is the number of draw calls, not the number of vertexes practically". This seems to match with what I've been watching. But yesterday I did a test. I drawed 1000 models (simple models) and they only consumed 20 fps, and drawing my character that doesn't have more than... 100 draw_primitives, consumes like 60 fps. Maybe it's not only the number of draw calls but another thing? Thanks for the responses ;_;
@machimanta
@machimanta 4 года назад
@@LegendarySSSparda If you are drawing 1000 of the same model, GPUs are pretty smart these days and can recognize that and internally batch them into a single model, more-or-less. Also important to note that these are generalizations, not strict rules. There are more factors that can come into play depending on the complexity of your scene/application. Edit: Also you probably wouldn't use vertex shaders to animate a character anyway. Vertex shaders are better for animating simple things like grass sway and stuff like that

You too clearly don't know anything about coding. It's not the quantity of the codes. I am not an expert on 3D but I'll explain since I know GM for almost 2 years now: 1. 3D models: Use an EXTERNAL 3D editor and just export that and import to GM. I think the model movement is the difficult part. 2. Everything else with 3D (shadows, lighting etc.) is done by code but since it's just repeating for every model it's written juat once - in a script. This is my opinion and my belief so no hate.
