BELLARMINE VS SAN LEANDRO: FIVE TAKEAWAYS
1. BELLS BACKFIELD GOES BEAST MODE
The tandem of senior Anthony Guttadauro and junior Kyle Macauley at running back was unstoppable against the Pirates defense. These two backs combined for 312 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 20 carries.
2. THE MEN IN BLUE
Mike Janda's defense shut down a Pirates offense that misses injured QB Stephen Johnson III terribly. The Bells picked off Anthony Onciano three times but had two more passes that could have been taken away as well. Free safety Adam Greenlow was the #Playmaker of the game with two interceptions.
3. MEET REUBEN BAKER
San Leandro may have had it's offensive problems but the Pirates definitely have a main threat at wide receiver with senior Reuben Baker. After catching a game-winner against James Logan the week prior, Baker caught 4 passes for 54 yards vs Bellarmine. Those stats may not seem flashy but he is still the most targeted receiver for the Pirates and should improve.
4. REPLACING K.J. CARTA-SAMUELS
Ah, Bellarmine fans remember the name very well. As the former Bells QB is now beginning his college career as a Washington Huskie, I'm trying to figure out who will be full-time starting signal caller at Bellarmine. Senior Griffin Quinn and junior Troy Martig rotated almost every play vs San Leandro and both have different qualities. Quinn is the prototypical passer while Martig will mainly run the option. It will be interesting to see who emerges as the leader of this offense.
5. THE RETURN OF SJ3
I spoke to San Leandro QB and UCLA-commit Stephen Johnson III before the game and he told me the cast on his fractured foot will be off in two weeks. Johnson believes he may be ready to play against Bishop O'Dowd on October 24th but the decision is up to head coach Brad Bowers. The Pirates could have their best overall player back on the field during the heat of WACC-Foothill action.
