wow this was much richer than just a book review. I never knew my natural father, and only met him a few times in my life. My mom, though full of love, had pretty serious emotional issues, and without going into details, I look back on my past as if it was some kind of tragic black comedy. I've always felt out of place and that I don't fit with normal society. While I now feel certain that will never change, I do feel more at peace with it, and that I have an identity and sense of self, just not one that most people would be able to understand. I used to hang at Buddy Saunders & Howard Waldrip's first Lone Star Comics store in Arlington in 1973 and learned about GRRM back when he was skinny (before Sand Kings & Dying of the Light). I kept up with his career. When I saw A Game of Thrones in '96 at a bookstore I scoffed and thought George had hopped on the Wheel of Time bandwagon. But I cannot disrespect him, the first three books of SoI&F are as good as the best of any fiction in any genre I've ever read. Pity they're unfinished, but the ending of the HBO show worked for me. It's all we're gonna get (I heard HBO recently advanced GRRM about 50 million---nothing inspires writers to write more and faster than enough money in the bank to live large for ten lifetimes).
I just started the Blackest Heart. I really enjoyed your stories about the convention, how you got the sword, meeting GRRM back in 1997, etc. Nice asides...
The pacing of the last 2 seasons isn’t the same as earlier seasons. I don’t mind where the showed went but I mind how fast we got there. And can I ask how you felt about the tactics during the battle of winterfell? The show quite honestly broke my heart.
This is another great video Brian. You remind me of the 1974 TV movie The Stranger who Looks Like Me .Did you ever watch it? I'm sixty One and I'm still deeply touched by the dialog in the movie. BTW, did you ever meet with Neal Adams?
You were only joking but you made a good point: Martin should appoint someone to complete his ASOIAF in the instance that he can't. And maybe that someone is you.
Oh wow 😥 I did the same thing imagining my real family growing up. I used to pretend my mom looked like Pocahontas (from the Disney movie), because I thought she was so beautiful. Also, she is as opposite of me physically as one could possibly be. I'm super fair, blonde and curly haired. Being that I had no genetic mirroring (seeing people who looked like me) I thought there could be no one uglier than I was, so I pictured my mother as the beautiful Pocahontas. In the adoptee community we call this The Ghost Kingdom, the story we make up about our origin in the absence of the truth of our identity. I super encourage you to read the book The Primal Wound. It's widely known as the adoptee bible, and is the book that finally validated all my feelings of loss, grief, anger, and pain related to adoption. I'm so sorry to hear that you felt similarly to so so many of us 😓 these feelings are common and so valid. I just barely started reading The Forgetting Moon and look forward to seeing how you write some of your experience as an adoptee into character. Search around. Book two should still be available on Amazon in hardcover. The paperbacks are the same size as the hardcover and just as nice. Get those if u can
just a side note, brian. If i may. Being adopted doesn't necessarily mean you're a bastard or an orphan. it can be very damaging to have grown up thinking this way. i have no idea who or where your biological parents are. you may not either, but there is no need to drag yourself down or denigrate yourself as a bastard or isolate yourself as an orphan if you in fact don't know the circumstance of your birth or if you in fact may have biological siblings/parents still living. i would think such thinking and statements could also serve to discount and diminish the parents who raised you. you may even be dishonoring their love and care and efforts to give you a home that perhaps your biological parents may not have been able to. you are not a bastard or an orphan.
Was so disappointed by this series after all the hype. The show led me to the books and the show's execution (excluding season 8 and parts of 7) is better. Much like Tom Clancy and George Lucas, GRRM is a concept guy, the execution (to me) is lacking. Personal preference. I'm the same way with Tolkien. Tried reading them in high school and barely made it through The Hobbit. His style just doesn't appeal top me.
