Jons sword "Longclaw" was the Mormont family sword. That sword is made of Valeriyan steel. The sword would have been passed to Jorrah but after he broke the laws and got exiled, he left the sword. Lord Commander Jeor Mormont gave it to Jon after Jon saved the Lord Commander from a wight within castle Black. He also replaced the pommel from a bear to a wolf to represent house Stark.

Oh I completely agree. That’s why I said moment. The last twenty minutes of this episode definitely holds its own with the battle of black water, the red wedding, and a certain event that happens later. But yes, everything before those twenty minutes isn’t memorable.

Well not yet, but there is a lot of hints that a hardhome expedition will happen in the books, it will be after the white walkers have destroyed it though as Jon has recieved letters from a previous expedition force of there being "dead things in the trees and dead things in the water" whatever the hell that means.

There is a "behind the scenes" video out there where the producers and the director talk about how they had all kinds of problems making the script for this episode work until they realized that they were coming at the Hardhome fight the wrong way. They had initially been seeing it as a battle, when they should have been looking at it like a massacre. And once they figured out just how out-classed the Wildlings and the Night's Watch were, how easily everyone could have died and were dying, and how it should all be chaos and fear and death, it all came together for them. Lord Commander Jeor Mormont gave Jon the Valyrian steel sword Longclaw. It had been in the Mormont family for a thousand years, but since Jeor's son Jorah betrayed the honor of the family by engaging in the slave trade, Jeor didn't think Jorah worthy of it. So he gave it to Jon, the closest thing he had to a son who he felt was worthy of it. By the way, now's the time to start coming up with a list of the people out there armed with Valyrian steel blades that we know of, because -- and this is not a spoiler, just basic rational thinking -- they suddenly became a lot more important. Turns out the White Walkers hate Thenns too. I do love the fact that they cast Birgitte Hjort Sørensen -- she played Karsi, the female Wildling leader, the one killed by the zombie kids -- for just one episode. Its sort of like getting the Danish version of Merryl Streep to do a one-time cameo on your show.

Steven, you're right, that was Mormont's sword. It was meant to be passed down to Jorah, his son, but since Jorah was banished, he gave it to Jon instead for saving his life. It was their family sword, but Mormont only had one son, who was disgraced. Changed the pommel from a Bear(house Mormont), to a Wolf(Stark), before giving it to Jon.

You know, I think there is more to that look that we know about. We know nothing about these White Walkers, but I still wonder if the Night King had either visions or someone tell him a prophecy a long time ago like Cersei was told hers by that witch, and he was told that one man would give him trouble, and now he knows who that man is. It's all speculation of course, but the way things are tied to fate, magic and premonitions, I won't be surprised.

The way they look at each other is testament to how much they are a good match. They smile at least once a sentence when they are discussing the show.Also, Steve continually looks at Nikki when there are some really emotionally tragic scenes to make sure she is okay. I see Steve getting equally as upset about the deaths of children and dire wolves like Nikki as show continues.

It doesn't matter when the White Walkers and their army are coming. They'll steamroll over everyone. Now we see the unique properties of the Valyrian steel sword. This may also give you a clue as to why Ned Stark, the Warden of the North, possessed the huge Valyrian great sword named "Ice." After the Wall and the Night's Watch, his lands (the North) would be the first defense against the Army of the Dead. This reality was reflected in the size of that weapon.

The reason this episode is so good, especially the battle part, is that it just keeps one upping itself. Whenever we saw white walkers up until this point it was for quite a short while whereas here it got more and more intense. You go "Oh shit, OH SH- OHHH SHIIIIT" for the entire Hardhome-part. Also after all that intensity and swelling dramatic music it's so chilling when the last moments of the episode is just silent. One of THE episodes of the show.

This is why I awaited this episode, the reaction did not disappoint. A few thougths: - This season was kinda rough, this is when I got "back in", Jon's side never dissapoints. - It's so good to watch how Cersei played the game to much and ended up playing herself in the process. Her punishment is golden. - Hardhome is my favourite episode, bacuse it shows how meaningless the whole other side of the wall is: the fghting in Kings Landing, all the plotting and sceaming... it's all nothin compared to the army beyond the wall, the treat is so immense that it puts everything in a new perspective. - I also love how JonTormund forms this comradery with Tormund an the wildling warriors, it has a good wibe.

This is the episode that changed my attitude towards the series. Even though I knew the Wall stuff was important, that was always the more boring part for me. I preferred the politics of King's Landing and watching what happens to Arya and Sansa. But then this episode happened and my whole perspective changed.

Loved this episode for two reasons. First it’s a true wake up call for Jon, the force they are up against cannot lose a battle and gain strength with every one. Secondly, we learn that the white walkers have something more than an instinct to destroy life, at least their leader has intelligence enough to taunt Jon at the end there. Instead of mindlessly moving onto the next task at hand.
@jcompton8507
@jcompton8507 5 лет назад
I'm not sure this wake up call was meant for Jon, per se; he was worried enough about the White Walkers to offer to let the Free Folk south of the Wall, going against thousands of years of being enemies. I think the wake-up call was meant for us as viewers more than anything. It was meant to drive home that the fight for the throne matters little in the grand scheme of things.

This might be my favorite episode. That one minute silence after the dead are awoken is insane. Especially after the "AMAZING" music that made you feel how horrid the situation is. But the silence is the audience and the survivors realizing the only thing that matter is the survival of the living. It really helps sink in the threat of the white walkers. I always get chills watching that part.
@San4311

Winter itself is just a season like real life. Except it lasts for years except 4 months. Westeros in the timespan of Game of Thrones just had a very long summer, so ''Winter is Coming'' is being drawn out so much because it has been a long time since. Yes the walkers bring winter with them, but it obviously can snow without them. Also, Valyrian steel is a steel smithed in Old Valyria (thus ''the last Valyrian steel sword has been forged before the Doom of Valyria'' as mentionned in ''Two Swords'', when Tywin reforged Ned's Ice, which was House Stark's Valyrian greatsword.) As revealed in this episode, Valyrian steel has the same ''power'' as obsidian being able to both kill walkers, and withstand their ice-weapons. Also, compared to normal forging steel, Valyrian steel never loses its edge and remains sharp forever (thus, for example, when Ned got executed, it was a clean cut, because it was done with Ice; same with Jon executing that scared cunt whose name I forgot). Also, yes, Longclaw, Jon's sword, was House Mormont's ancestral weapon, before Jeor gave it to Jon, and after Jorah ''denied'' the weapon when he got exiled to the East.
@iloveyourunclebob
@iloveyourunclebob 5 лет назад
Mormont gave the sword to Jorah. When Jorah went into exile, after getting caught selling people into slavery to support his wife's life of luxury, he left the sword. Mormont's sister sent to sword to him at the wall. When Jon saved him from the wight with fire, it got damaged from being hidden away in a storage. Mormont had a wolf's head pummel put on with two ruby eyes and gave it to Jon for saving his life.

One of the top 3 best episodes of the series, this show is great about making emotional connections to characters. The female chiefton that was killed by the walker children impacted me, as it seemed to impact Nikki, even though she was only in this episode and it was a shame she was killed bc she had the potential to be a very good and strong character.

I always like point out with this episode: it just gave us characters, dialogue and zombie action better than most movies and It's a TV show that had nine other episodes in the same year. Also, it's so intense when Jon gets in a battle because we have seen so many times that GRRM doesn't have a James Bond, ie a character who can't realistically die.
