Rivians are def my favorite evs rn solely on looks alone, I love the pill shaped headlights its so unique u know what is from 1 mile down the road and it gives it a very friendly and approachable look 🤣
The price is outrageous, which is unfortunate because I like the way it looks. But I refuse to pay that price for a Kia. If it was 60k for the GT line, then maybe... But 75k+, nah I'm good.
Should drop maybe 5k once they are pouring out of the West point GA plant and maybe the all new hyundai/Kia metaplant in Savannah Georgia opening in late 2024. Ad built in nacs and tax credit for 2025? Should make this extremely competitive in the 3 row full size ev SUV space. 👍🏻
It’s not about it being a KIA. It’s about mediocre specs for this price. The battery should have been 130 kWh, and then we could have a conversation about the price. The RWD with 200HP? For this size SUV? Seriously, KIA? If it were 350 HP RWD with 130 kWh battery with the EPA range at 400 miles, it would be a very compelling vehicle at this price even being a KIA.
Kia is dumping lots of these on dealers…$7500 factory to customer incentive + dealers discounts exceeding $8K…you got your wish of an EV9 GT-line for $60K.
I owned the first Niro EV in St. Louis 3 plus years ago - put 40,000 miles on it, not 1 issues - loved it, my first EV!! We just upgraded to the Ev6 and have owned 6 KIA's over the years, Rio, Sportage, Sedona, Forte, Niro, Telluride - love them all for price and durability. This vehicle looks great and has so many features for the money! The only thing I do NOT love are the wheels - but that is so minor. We will trade the Telluride for one of these soon I am sure! KIA is the only brand I buy! Never and issue!
Im really torn between this thing and a Polestar 3. Had a drive in an EV9 and really found it good. Gonna wait to get a drive in a PS3 before i make up my mind. Although if I go for the EV9 I will be replacing the alloys; they are not my cup of tea lol.
Agreed, we have very little choice in Canada and in the USA for compact and affordable wagons and hatchbacks, especially for those on a dedicated and modern EV platform. It will be interesting to see if Hyundai or Kia will beat Tesla to market, as the EX30 will be quite expensive in Canada.
I have done some tests on the big battery here in Sweden, 350A is the limit on a “800V” charger, unfortunately only 200A limit if you charge at “400V” a charger. Big disappointment if you are a nerd but OK for normal people.
In Canada the vehicle is very close in price to the similar gas Telluride, especially when incentives are available (5k National plus select Provincial rebates)
We don’t have the Telluride in the UK. The nearest we have is the Model X but only left hand drive or the Volvo EX90 both £20K more than the top of the line EV9. Or the BMW iX which is even more expensive spec for spec.
yeah I agree, at close to $80K they are competing against the Model X and Rivian R1S, both of which have air suspension, are much faster, have longer range and more. If the GT Line was $62K it would be really hard to beat.
@@Aegisx5Rivian has more range but The X’s real world range is pretty similar to the EV9. Came in a little lower in Edmunds test while the EV9 exceeded EPA by 34 miles. The Rivian and C still come in over $10k more. And it’s a feature trade off. I would use the Kia’s CarPlay every drive while the 1 sec faster 0-60 is a novelty that’s fun but would rarely be used. I like the look of the Rivian more and it has more cargo capacity but between CarPlay and Kia’s amazing regen control it’s pulling ahead even if they had been price neutral. Better warranty that Rivian (dual motor) or Tesla too.
You guys sure make a good team. Nice job on the videoing. It utterly astounds me that Kyle can remember and keep track of the details from all these vehicles.
About to watch this review. I'm hoping to replace my Chevrolet Traverse with this EV9. This Kia is about $20k more than the Chevy so It has to be good.
@tlangton yes, but greedy mfgs. Aren't focused on that, they just want high priced vehicles, so they can make huge profits on these. The one that ever makes $22k ev at 300mile range , will destroy all others , all this other crap, doesn't really mean anything for 80%.
If these companies are going to use Tesla charging they NEED to put the charging port on the left side. This car will take up 2 charging spaces with the port on the right side. 😠
The regen stuff is just madness. full regen, half regen, no regen. Those are the only useful options. They spend so much time building stuff no one needs
Great video, really excited about this. My wife and I are looking at this to be our first EV, its pretty solid. I hope that the ID Buzz (US Spec) is a similar price to this since that is also on the list for us.
80k KIA man what is happening to the car world. I would never have thought I would see a KIA this expensive. I would never buy a KIA as I had one years ago and nothing but problems.
Many people have good dealership experiences, especially in Canada where selling over MSRP is often not an issue. As supply increases the price gouging will be less of a problem. Some brands are moving to online sales with pickup at a dealership to eliminate prices over MSRP
Re: a start button. I'm known for being something of a curmudgeon, but I've driven two cars without a start button _and did not like it at all_ Bottom line it comes down to this: I want to tell the car what to do, and I don't want it making decisions for me. While 95% of the time the cars-without-buttons are making the right decision, the 5% is supremely irritating - want to leave the climate control on for your passenger while you run out and check a mailbox? Now you have to learn some trick or dig into the infotainment screen to figure out how to do that. Need to just grab something from the glove compartment? I don't need the car coming on and ramping up the A/C compressor. The worst offender to me was the windshield wipers. The XC40 Recharge I just rented decided to turn them on before I had even sat down. That's not helpful! It's flinging water at me since it decided it should turn on by itself. It's a single button push and I don't understand why people get so worked up about it. While I'm all for giving people the option of "drive-and-go" or whatever, I would much prefer that be *an option* and a power button is left in-place for the old codgers like me that want their car to behave as they expect it to behave and don't want to learn new tricks to make it do what it used to do. Plus, I'd rather it be there as a means of emergency shut-down. And if I'm honest, I like the confirmation that I have turned off the car. It always left me uneasy leaving the Volvo since it wasn't apparent at all that it had shut down. Brains are different and what we want is different - I just thought I'd share my perspective because your assertion that a start button is "silly" kind of rubs me the wrong way. I want one and personally will avoid cars without it (at least as long as I can...)
@@TWellington If the climate control comes on before that, and especially if it turns off on its own when I leave the car, that's not an acceptable substitute for me. I want to know what the car is doing and I want to be in full-control of it. Not half-control.
20:43 For a moment I thought this was going to change into a 1990s horror B movie and I would hear and see bones sticking out. EV9 is still a big too big and obnoxious for my taste/use on European roads, something 90% its size would be great. I still don't understand the need for a very long hood in this era. Sure you need some space for motor and crash impact.... it's better - it's not like the BMW iX - but it could still be shorter.
Manual Battery Preconditioning is a big deal! Please do more testing. Can you activate it with less than 20% SoC??? That has been a huge limitation for existing eGMP vehicles!!!
Thank you, Kyle. I'm waiting for Ford's promised 3-row EV SUV, which should be available by the time I'm ready to turn back in my Mach-E GT in July 2026.
67% residual at 10/24, .00308 MF... I don't think anyone should call that "good". For reference, a $94k BMW IX xDrive50 is leasing in the 700's with MSDs at 36/7.5 in CA.
So 10,000-mile limit each year on a lease? I thought average person drove 12,000 miles a year, so this limit seems a bit low... And if you do road trips often, then a 15,000-mile limit would be more fitting...
Kyle, what are your thoughts on the 2 recent cases in Canada where Ioniq5 vehicles were written off following relatively minor impacts with road debris and 60k replacement battery cost quoted? It seems that the GMP design may not have sufficient battery pack ptotection, and a sturdy plate may be required, like the one added to Model S years ago.
@michaelroshko7067 no, it's not. Both customers were quoted 60k replacement cost by Hyundai. The insurance wrote the vehicles off as battery replacement costs exceeded the value of the car
@@jamespaul2587 yes, as in that number being as high as it is is the result of an insurance claim. If you go to Hyundai and ask for a quote for a HV battery replacement on an eGMP car, it’ll hover around $28k.
@@michaelroshko7067dealers mark up that battery plus you got that dealer price ripoff of installation and removal prices they ripped price of 56k is legit lookup the RU-vid videos
Neither the rivian or the model X can even compete. Rivian is way more expensive for a max trim and the X just lacks so many things the kia has so there jus is no competition for the same price and equipment.
i want to know if EVs brake lights turn on when regenerative braking is activated? because regenerative braking is acting like brakes & it's dangerous if it doesn't do that!
I found here in santa ana California i was ready yo buy it but when the told me the price with that damnn mark up i had to say 👋 ✌️. I guess tesla will be my choise
Thanks Kyle and Alyssa for an honest review I'm in regional Australia and we don't have any start ups or local or imported equivalents due to hit our market till 2028....So I have a Kia ev9 GT Line on order for 2024 May delivery. I have been patiently waiting for an EV with the range and power & charging capability specs to tow a caravan. It also has to accommodate my 4 dogs. Australia only has a bench seat version available in the GT Line which suits me fine but I think families would love the option of the swivel captains mid row seats for Baby capsules. My criteria was V2Grid/home/load although Australia is very behind with the option to do this. I purchased a Leaf in 2020 as it was the only EV capable of V2home. The geeky stuff is important when comparing brands or fulfilling expectations of a fit for purpose EV. So appreciate your reviews over the years.
I live down south of Denver and yet I have bought two vehicles (2022 Carnival and 2023 EV6) from Fort Collins Kia over the past two years due to terrible experiences trying to deal with other Kia dealerships in the greater Denver Metropolitan area. They treat you like an actual person and are not super pushy, even in the back office. The person I worked with to buy my EV6 actually knew something about EVs, which was definitely not the case with other dealerships (other Kia, VW, and Hyundai) besides Tesla when I was test driving various vehicles a few months ago before buying my EV6. About the car though, I really like the concept of the EV9, but with several young kids, I can't imagine buying a car that doesn't have sliding doors. Here is hoping Kia either releases a full EV van or they at least do a plug-in hybrid Carnival in the future.
3 row EV comparison for sure. Model X, Rivian and this. Yes I would cross shop them. You should get some cheap used car seats to install in the back seats. Super helpful for us family’s to see real world use.
I would love to see the comparison between the EV9, the model X and the R1S. I’m considering all three as a replacement for my current tow vehicle. Contenders must be able to tow a minimum of 5000 pounds and have a towing range of at least 125 miles.
These three SUV's are amazing and you can't really go wrong with either, just depends on your needs. If towing is your main goal, out of these 3 options, the R1S is your best bet. The Model X and EV9 can only tow max 5,000. The R1S can tow 7,500, so if 5000 minimum is your must have, really the R1s is your only option. The range between the three while towing will be pretty similar, but the R1S probably has the edge. The only problem with the R1S and EV9 is the public charging network isn't as good as Tesla, but hopefully that will be changing next year; so my unsolicited two cents would be the R1S. The EV9 and R1S have a more usable third row than the X, so if you need to sit more people and really use that third row, I'd rule the X out. We personally have the 3 row X and that 3rd row is just not enjoyable for road trips. As far as features between the R1S and EV9, I'd go for the Rivian because we can see they are frequently doing over the air updates, making chargers, and really striving for a continual better user experience similar to Tesla through app integration and software changes, whereas who knows how much over the air software changes Kia will do. TLDR: R1S
@@jeffreygeiger3824 I checked out the Rivian R1S and the EV9 at the Los Angeles auto show. The second row seat leg room in the Rivian is tight at only 36 inches while the EV9 is 41 inches. By comparison my Mach e second row leg room is 38 inches. My boat and trailer weigh 5000 pounds so hopefully Kyle does a tow test within the next 6 months
Tow range on an EV depends more on speed and trailer aero than on weight. An empty horse trailer will cut range in half, while a flatbed of bricks won't.

I believe the EV9 will be the fastest to recharge for long range towing. I believe the R1S is slightly slower?
Just ask Kia/Hyundai what happens wenn your ICCU broke down, or you have dead cells in the battery pack. Here in germany actual more an more of this failure pop up. ICCU changes uses months for the customers. And a bad cell package in the battery is also reclined very hard by kia/hyundai. This is very bad for me, to see such a good platform, but such a shitty customer service. "OUR DEVICE MUST DETECT THE BAD BATTERY" "SOH is 98%" -> but customer gets only 50kWh capacity instead of purchased 77kWh... its a pain and actual I would not buy a kia/hyundai EV.
10:33 If I’m not mistaken, Kia’s pack voltage ratings are at around 0% SOC, so 552 V is 552 V dead. For comparison, the EV6 pack is rated at something like 697 V. Presumably this should stay in the “boost” regime the whole time.
I'm a really big fan of the EV9. It's comfortable and roomy and has solid features. The problem I see though is it seems to be about $5k-10k over what I'd expect and I think I'm not alone there. There are a lot of them on dealer lots and Kia is offering a fairly significant rebate already. I hope it sells well, but I think a lot of people with gas vehicles that are considering this will have a hard time paying $20k more than a comparable Telluride. And if people want an EV, It's not drastically less than a Rivian R1S which seems superior in many ways. There's a lot to unpack, I just hope it does well.
Gas in the $3s or less, outside California, I think very very few will think spending 70k+ on this is worth it over the ICE offerings. Spending over 40k is even a tough sell when a lot of people's comparable last car 5-10 years ago was probably 20s to low 30s in this segment. I'm thinking my parents and family members not making corporate or tech money, no way they could afford something like this and I think that applies to a lot of America.
Yeah that's my point. I put out a video a month or so discussing the pricing and being worried it won't sell well. Considering most people are getting them at MSRP and Kia is offering attractive lease deals and rebates already, that's not a great sign @@tazeat
Mine just came in and test drive it today. It was great but felt it was $10k too much, esp for the range. I would rather spend a little more and get the base r1s w more range and power.
@@Wasabi9111 yeah that's my thoughts. I really liked the GT-Line and the Land trims when I got to spend some time with them, but I just worry people will not be willing to spend the money on them over an R1S or Lucid Gravity when it comes out.
Wow. I was excited for the EV9 before this video but now I can't wait. Manually-triggered battery conditioning?! I need that on my I5. I was surprised by the strange voltage range on the big battery; hopefully that doesn't cause issues with DC charging. Adding to the chorus: I'd love to see the R1S vs. EV9 comparison specifically. Including the Model X would be a bonus, but I think a lot of buyers will be primarily cross-shopping the first two since they are more traditional SUV shapes with more cargo space. (Just ask the dogs!) As always, I love all the details in these videos. Thanks, Kyle and Alyssa!
I have watched many dozens of your videos. This was my favorite so far. I like how Alyssa is now comfortable in front to the camera. Well done Kyle! Oh, BTW EV9 seems near state of the art!
Hint: set playback speed at 1.5. Thanks Kyle and Alyssa for the review! Nice work snagging the review car from the dealer; win / win for the dealer and for the channel.
Great review as usual guys. Love that we're hearing so much of Alyssa's perspective these days as well. I think I share the perspective that Kia keeps surprising us with steps up the ladder in quality, styling, new ideas, etc. given that old timers like myself can remember the entry level cars Kia/Hyundai focused on in my youth. They seem to be moving a bit from the approach of copying the competition by making comparable cars that win on price to one where they are now taking the design and production lead, especially in the EV space. Hopefully their cars won't start to price their traditional customers out of the market going forward.
What’s funny to me is,e, is how so many folk forget Honda, Mazda, and Toyota had the same progression. They were the Japanese junk back in the 70’s and 80’s, and Toyota now owns the world market. Nobody in America wanted to even sell the cars except one dude in California, and A,Erica’s car dealers talked about him like a dog. He was scorned for peddling that “Asian Crap”….. Give Kia/Hyundai a few more years. They’re killing the tech/features/luxury game for the buck. All they need now is stability in the reliability and they’ll definitely be ahead of the pack. Their overall value cannot be beat, but it’s gonna take more reliability to lift their resale value.
Overall it's a super compelling vehicle but I can't help but think that they missed the chance to absolutely hit it out of the park. If they had taken the time to make the front trunk a bit more "Lightning-ish" then it would have been a slam dunk. 3 row SUVs are always a bit challenged in the cargo department but EVs offer the opportunity to remedy that with amazing space up front to augment the rear. I really think they dropped the ball by making the frunk such an after thought.
the lightning sucks as an electric truck, as a plain transport vehicle its ok. So the KIA design/function/efficiency and build quality is far superior to FORD. Just google ford ev problems...
@@daisycutter869 dude, I get that you're biased but I was simply talking about the design of the frunk, they dropped the ball not making it more useful and large like the lightning's design. It would have made the EV9 an absolutely killer vehicle
I really hoped for the EV9 to be that next EV SUV I get. I own a Model Y and an ID.4. When Kia announce the specs, I was disappointed. One has to choose between decent range and decent power. The RWD is ridiculously anemic with a 200 HP motor and slow acceleration. The AWD doesn’t have enough range for a new EV in 2024. Now we know that there is no 800V charging either. The EV9 is overpriced. This EV can’t be a family long tripper. It can be a family hauler around town, but why would I want to spend this amount of money on something so mediocre in 2024? A family road tripper must have more than 300 miles of range to be seriously considered a road tripper. It’s not just about how fast it can charge. It’s also about how far you can get on one charge because charging infrastructure is not ubiquitous in the US. Personally, my next family SUV will have AT LEAST 350 miles EPA.
I wouldn't use the EPA as your gold standard for evaluation since all of their ranges are non-realistic. Base your life on a non-corrupt organization. Besides what SUV even gets 350+ miles of range?
You mean, instead of making a small car, that gets requests in the comments of practically every video ever posted about any EV, Tesla should do something bold and different and make . . . The Model X??
