The oil tank will eventually start to leak and if the oil reaches the concrete your walls will be destroyed, and if that happens there are no way of repairing it. I highly recommend emptying the tank and find another way of heating your house. And when you can afford it you should also remove the tank because it is almost impossible of getting out all the oil. I can tell you that in Norway these tanks have become illigal and all houses have to remove them because of the potential damages they can cause. Good luck!
@MetalJesusRocks
@MetalJesusRocks 5 лет назад
Agreed. We've looked into gas heat...but it doesn't currently run to our house... but we are also looking at Radiant floor heat and an external heat tank, so there are options in the future.
@oyvindjustin
@oyvindjustin 5 лет назад
@@MetalJesusRocks I have actually removed an oil tank like this before and I know how much work it is but the potential danger to your house if it starts to leak will be catastrophic and I dont know if an insurance company will cover that, you should definitely look into it if you haven't already. I wish you good luck and by the way your RU-vid channel is awesome!
@morph-x7153
@morph-x7153 5 лет назад
It's funny, but kinda not actually, how that works. Oil heating has been banned for ages over here in the Netherlands and i see MJR saying "we've looked into gas heating", whilst our government is on a witch hunt to banish gas and push every single household to more environmental friendly heating solutions, for instance heating pumps generating heat by pumping water deep under ground where it's heated in a natural way and pumping it back up. The US (and so many other parts in the world) are really lacking behind with this kind of stuff... Not hating, just saying...
@kevintjeuh8888
@kevintjeuh8888 5 лет назад
@@morph-x7153 its true, im from belgium, i would have dig up that front yard and fix the outside wall of the basement, not really a big deal, even the draining laks behind if you look at the tube they use, it isnt smooth on the inside and so dirt gets stuck, and how these american homes are build is how i would build my gardenhouse in my backjard
@coolsnake1134
@coolsnake1134 5 лет назад
One thing you could do with the underground oil tank is when it comes time to replace it don’t bury the new one in the yard instead drain the oil from the old one and have them put the new one inside the house in the basement if there’s room.

@samples34
@samples34 5 лет назад
ninjasec ya I know insurance is a racket. If any thing happens to a lot of people in other parts of America and the insurance pays out a lot you can bet your rates will go up so they can recoup there losses. Hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding ya insurance companies will raise your rates no matter if its you or somebody’s else’s misfortunes. If yours ever goes up ask them why.
@dpalmerama
@dpalmerama 5 лет назад
That's the problem with having to make a claim on your insurance. Because you've used it for its intended purpose, and if they pay out without being able to recoup their losses you're premium will go up as you become a higher risk to insure. What's a bigger pisstake is when you just notify your insurers and are doing it through the other parties insurance company and your premium goes up regardless!

When houses are built today, any wall that comes into contact with earthen material is going to have a sub drain installed towards the bottom of the wall on the outside, which allows for any water to infiltrate into the drain and thus be diverted to your main drainage system. Interesting stuff, but yeah a sub drain would be hard to put in there due to the trenching required and the presence of the oil tank.
@pilcrow182

Insurance usually covers carpet, but he did not file a claim. A good carpet company should be able to find something similar and patch it in.

Insurance adjuster here. I wanted to comment on your use of insurance for the damages. Most likely the insurance would have only covered the interior damages to the basement. Anything needed outside would not be covered. The exterior damage happened over an extended period of time, and was caused by wear and tear, which is excluded on a homeowners policy. Hope that helps! Glad you were able to get it taken care of

Insurance what a RIP off. Pay for 20 plus yrs without a claim and all your going to fix is the carpet and the furniture. That makes since you'll pay for the cheap shit and not what needs to be fixed and then raise the rates, like the 20 yrs paid in wouldn't cover this easily.
@michaelmcgovern8825
@michaelmcgovern8825 5 лет назад
No insurance company covers wear and tear. Do you file an insurance claim when your brake pads wear out on your car? It totally sucks that wear and tear isnt covered, but if it was, insurance would need to cover every product ever produced would need to be replaced at the end of its service life and insurance would be 100 times more expensive than it already is.

Also in most cases, the wear and tear is the cheapest part of repairs. If a pipe bursts and floods your home, insurance will cover the water damage, but not the repair to the plumbing. My company pays thousands, if not millions of these claims every year. In MJR's case, the wear and tear was significantly higher than the water damage. In 90% of cases, it's the other way around. In

My company said they wouldn't even cover personal items, furniture, carpet or drywall in my basement no matter what, even if a pipe burst in my house (found this out after my sump pump failed and had some water come in after days of rain). They only cover stuff like AC/heat, water heater, electrical, washer/dryer, and chest freezers. Same with federal flood insurance. Apparently furnished basements haven't been the norm for 20+ years and they are only for housing utilities, doing laundry and storing extra food, but not personal items. Not sure I will be doing the basement theater room after all.... don't want to drop nearly $10k on furniture and electronics that could be wasted if one of my crappy 1990's copper pipes burst above that basement area (right under my kitchen).

Looks like galvanized pipe for the oil fill, another thing waiting to break. @04:24 , they aren't under pressure from what I know about it, which is why they last a lot longer than say if that ran through your whole house. If you still have galvanized pipe in your house - just remember it WILL break, and you'll have to convert to copper and do a whole house re pipe. Hopefully the previous owners did that for you :). @07:38 Good guy, someone who volunteers to come over and work like that is awesome. I worked with a lot of great people in construction, and a few....well they weren't so great lol. I respect this man. $2500 is a STEAL for that type of work. Just looking at the scope of work he did is crazy. Last item, for a basement everything done so far is awesome. Personally I would have taken an extra step and I would have gutted the walls and then put masonary waterproofing paint on the interior. Yes, it's another fix on top of the other fixes, but if this is a forever home then it's something I would have done. I understand I'm construction oriented, got 15 years in it before I switched to IT (about 10 years ago) but I remodel houses on the side all the time. For you, this would have costed another couple grand. You'll be fine with the outside and the inside, just putting in my 2.5 cents in :)

True, galvanising is just adding a sacrificial metal coating (usually zinc) onto a steel/iron pipe. Once that layer has gone the real corrosion starts.

Depending on what region you live, I'd get another French drain installed asap. Also, clean out any drains as much as possible, and add a grill to stop anytjing from getting in. If you do add a grill, make sure it is easily accessible to clean out if/when it starts to get clogged up.

Liscensed insurance agent here (not in your state so the info I'm presenting might be incorrect. I would suggest calling your company and asking for exact details.) But insurance is designed to protect against sudden and direct loss. Things like rot/mold/leaks aren't usually covered because they occur over time. The loss is something that takes time and is more akin to wear and tear. I've seen similar claims get denied numerous times. I'm not aware of any provider that will cover that kind of loss (in the 3 states I'm liscensed in). Im not liscensed as a claims person so I'm only speaking from experience of field underwriting. It might be covered, I'm not sure how that looks in your state. Generally speaking Insurance companies cover more like the falling tree that you describe.
@timg2727
@timg2727 5 лет назад
I'm licensed in 42 states (including Washington), and I can pretty much guarantee that it wouldn't have been covered - not only since it wasn't a sudden, direct loss, as you pointed out, but because most homeowners policies exclude damage from ingress of exterior water. Water damage would typically only be covered if the water source was inside the home (such as a burst pipe, etc).
@insaneapples1559
@insaneapples1559 5 лет назад
I concur. Also work in insurance. If you called, they likely would have denied the claim and raised your rates anyway.

No basements here on TX coast, but positive my homeowner's covers water damage caused by foundation issues. I did have to bump up a tier to get that IIRC. Seems like this would be a foundation issue, no? Or are basements a different deal? Sucks because any pipe busting is really gradual wear even though the event is sudden.

I'm with Allstate but not in your state where I'm at we cant cover any damage over time. Loss has to be an immediate occurrence, also no water seepage or earth movement. They would consider the erosion earth movement.
