saturn I'm doing my own take on it. My view is that link's character is what is dead, not link physically. In oot link is said that his life is entirely about defeating Ganon. That was what he was born to do. Before mm Zelda essentially tells him to leave hyrule fore its good. At this point links life, which has been all about defeating ganon, is essentially over. He has no purpose in life. He's not physically dead but if the owl's words are to be taken seriously, his life is over.
