I did this without any flux with a very shitty iron. It was messy ! Definitely listen to that guy's advices. Also, double sided tape is very helpful to hold the chip and ease the future stress the soldering point might take in the future.
Hi Sam, great video best out of the one's I've seen, good camera angles and in depth advice. I have installed the chip, it starts red, then turns off for a second and goes solid red again, according to you that should be OK. I did the pot tweak and got it to 200 just to make sure, but it's not reading original or burnt discs! I've tried to make sure all the joints are solid and I tinned them at the beginning! Any ideas what else it could be? I'm not an expert nor novice at soldering etc. somewhere in between, any help would be awesome man as I'm trying anything I can think of. Thanks.

Love the video. Thanks! Quick question - I read somewhere that ohm settings for DOL-001 and DOL-101 Gamecube models are different. ie. 450-600 Ohm for DOL-001 and 150-250 Ohm for DOL-101. You seem to have DOL-001 with HD port but still getting about 245 Ohm default. Please shed some light.
From my experience repairing and modifying GameCubes typically the model 001 or 101 isn't a direct indicator of what the resistance will be but more of which drive model it will have. There are two drive models, an 06 and 08 drive. That being said sometimes this rule isn't followed either, so I think (just my theory) GameCubes may actually be each factory calibrated differently from drive to drive. My rule of thumb is generally never below 200 ohms but the main thing to keep in mind is to slowly lower the impedance in small increments like 20Ohms and try again each time until you have success. If you have a GameCube that started at an impedance around 200Ohms you may have to go a bit below. Keep in mind that this fix doesn't repair the GameCube long term, you are simply giving the lens more power than the factory calibration to compensate for an aging drive. I really like to idea of SD card drive replacements for longevity sake of the console for this reason.
@@SamCampbell Wonderful. Thanks for the detailed and prompt reply. i just opened up a stock non-modded DOL-001 PAL Gamecube and potentiometer was set to 216 Ohm which I believe would be factory set. I did buy it second hand though. I installed the XenoGC modchip. Tweaked the potentiometer to 200 but unfortunately it doesn't read backups. I just need it boot up a Swiss disc and then I will play from SD. Do you think lowering below 200 would help or is there something to do with Xeno chip install. Anyway to check if Xeno chip is functioning properly or patched the firmware correctly? The original games still play perfectly.
SaminPK if you were going with a high heat or taking a long time on the joints, you may have fried the chip. Or you need to double check your soldering. Sounds like the GameCube is working, but the chip is not. Try holding start and see if you get the XENO menu.
Thanks Sam I've recently bought my very first ever GameCube I've ordered a xeno mod chip last night from eBay my total spend so far including console is £34 😉 i got the platinum console and wires with 1 control pad no games for £32 and got the chip for £2 and got free postage this is my first time moding anything my next purchase will be a cheap laptop to get the games burned to disc's I'm looking forward to my chip arriving 🙆 I'm trying to keep this at a minimum of £100 Inc the laptop i need but will get that 2nd hand then hopefully get around 40 playable games and I'll be happy with my £100 spent
Hi there, I don’t know if you still do modifications, but I bought a GameCube that supposedly have had the Xeno chip installed so that both English and Japanese Gamecube games work. Right now I’m having problems with Japanese games, as my GameCube is freezing upon loading, the same spot every time and I tried about 15 - 20 times. Is there anything you can suggest I can try or something you can check out for me? Please reply when you have time. Thanks very much.
Since the only XenoGCs that really exist anymore are knocks offs it's hard to tell whether some functionality will work correctly. So if you are having difficulty reading Japanese games you can always manually switch between NTSC-U and NTSC-J with the mod shown here www.ifixit.com/Guide/Nintendo+GameCube+Regional+Modification+Selector+Switch/35482
My Cube seems to properly read the Xeno chip I installed in it... you can visit the BIOS screen, although it shows up in a blurry PAL format. Problem is, it just won't read burned discs! I've lowered the pot to 150 ohms, but dare not go any lower than that... the laser already looks like it could bore through concrete as it is! Not sure if the installation isn't quite right or I'm just not burning the discs properly.
It could be the ISO you are trying to use. I'm assuming you've verified that an official disk works. If you've tried other ISO images, also make sure that you are writing the disks at the lowest speed possible. Another suggestion is to try Fujifilm mini DVD-Rs, for some reason people seem to have the most luck with them. Either way, good luck!
Official discs do work! But I'm not sure if that means properly burned copies will. I think the brand I was using was Ritechs, or some rebranded version of the same. I wanted to put Swiss on a disc so I could run the Game Boy Interface instead of the official Game Boy Player disc, but that didn't work so I had to install it on a memory card instead. :( I dunno. Does it matter if it's a later GC model, the one without the digital video output?
Shockingly, I DID do the mod correctly! I just wasn't burning the discs right. It was an embarrassingly easy fix... I just needed to burn them at 4x speed in ImgBurn. They start right up now! Unfortunately, now I'm a little concerned that I turned up the laser too high, and I don't really wanna open the system back up to adjust the pot. :P
What he doesnt tell you is that this is zoomed in alot. The chip is about the size of your thumbnail. If your a novice really think about using wires, these points are so small.
I try 200ohm for burn disk and the lens not read at all, my best is 126ohm in burn game run perfectly im confuse many people set around 175 - 201 ohm and i set like them my gamecube lens not read at all
This is a pretty good tip. My philosophy when making this video was to try and keep it simplistic. However my decision is a bit of a contradiction, because flux would actually make this easier, as you say, yet many won't want to be bothered to get some and find the guide over complicated.
@@SamCampbell I always douse everything in way too much flux.but i have been using an elliptical tip exclusively - mainly because thats what came with my cheap soldering iron (cheaper than yours). thanks for the chisel-tip tip :) i guess i didnt understand the fundamentals of soldering well enough lol. surface area can be your friend
Makes me so frustrated. I get a solid red light. I check and reheat I get red flashing flight. I check with braid. I get solid red light. I try again. red flashing lights.
Tested Chibi Robo Japanese loaded. Tested Alien Hominid USA loaded. Tested Zero FX UK loaded. The only thing is that when using a Pal console the Japanese games load but the text is Neither Japanese or English. Comes up like a weird f shape!! So to get Japanese text you still do need a Japanese console. But hey not bad
Stop scrubbing, you‘ll only hurt yourself. Try flux instead. - But seriously, get yourself a flux pen, it would have saved you a lot of trouble with non flowing flux in this video.
