I'm from Java.. Indonesia.. ☕️ 🇲🇨 Definitely this gamelan is Balinese Gamelan. Javanese Gamelan sound more calm, but this Balinese Gamelan sound more energetic.. My Grandfather usually play this kind of music in our tape cassette, for taking a nap in hot middle day, back in those days when I was still kid..
Ellis,,this one not Javanese gamelan but Balinese gamelan. The sound of Balinese gamelan is different from Javanese gamelan. Javanese gamelan has one percussion called "GONG". You can check it. I'm sure you will say " saya suka ini 😂😂
@allislamarworldmusik...you can reaktion.. folow "BALAWAN GUITAR or DEWA BUJANA . alipbata balines musisi ....thank .. me to😁 sory i can not speek englis jush bedik bedik ..moga kamu ngerti jak maksu tiange ...
the wave you hear in the resonance is called Ombak, it is an acoustic beating caused by each instrument being tuned in pairs with a 7-10hz difference between them so that when the same note is played on all instrument a wave/vibrato/beating is created. this is specific to Balinese gamelan, other gamelans in indonesia do not this particularity, or it is not has pronounced as in bali (I am artistic director of a professional Balinese gamelan in Montreal Canada, and have trained as gamelan tuner among many other skilled related to playing and teaching Gamelan ;) )
Ellis, if you come to Bali, you will feel different, you will say, oooohh this is Bali. You can't find in another place like Bali. But not only in Bali, in another place also have some beauty, but different culture. So....Wellcome to Indonesia. A piece of heaven in earth.
As Balinese, I play this gamelan Bali myself. My position is as the Ugal, the person who sit higher than others as leader. Thank you so much for reacting to our gamelan. There are a few more types that you can check out. 👌🏼
I will say your analysis of a lot of the musician's role and of what's going on is fairly accurate. in Balinese gamelan the two drummers (Kendang) at the front are basically the leader of the ensemble, they make various cues within their pattern that guide the speed and the dynamics, when to switch sections, etc. The player in the center (Ugal) is the secondary leader who leads the xylophone-like instruments and the rest of the group when the drums are not playing. fun fact, the way the higher registered instrument are able to play at crazy speed ( you can find even crazier example online for speed) is because the patterns in those moments are always devided among two instruments, one that plays on beat the other off beat and together they form a resulting melody, this even applies to drum who play their rhythmic pattern in the same way.
Indonesia has thousands of traditional musical instruments and each province has different musical instruments, different regional languages and different customs and cultures, sir.
Selamat datang dizona budaya multi keindahan yg penuh dg ke arifpan budaya lokal... Gamelan, merupakan instruments yg bisa dimainkan secara kolektif maupun perseorangan...💪🇮🇩❤️
That is Balinese music and usually combined with dancer. Ellise, come to Indonesia and enjoy our hospitality. 😊 That is one of thousands of Indonesian cultures.
Gamelan Bali itu seperti musik alam ..,kadang Sepoi poi ...kadang cepat ..keras ..lalu melambat ..,dan kadang menghentak .dan break .dan saling bersahutan ...itulah filosopi musik Bali mengikuti mudik alam ciptaan Tuhan...
Do not feel stupid or embarrased. Indonesia has more than 100 cultures each with their own unique languages. I myself as an Indonesian, this is the first time I hear Balinese gamelan. I heard Javanese gamelan many times when I lived in Java Island though 🙂 it was so peaceful. This Balinese sounds like energetic wind chime in nature to my ear. Soo beautiful 💓
Hi Jess. Yes, it was a Balinese-style gamelan, which is very dynamic. In Indonesia, there are many different styles of music with gamelan in accordance with the culture of the region from which it originates. Such as the style in Central Java which is calm but full of meaning, the style of West Java which is more dynamic and beautiful, the style of East Java which is funny, etc.
Basically, a gamelan is like an orchestra. It's consist of different instruments, differ in every region of Indonesia. Though it's a great Balinese gamelan performance.
Gamelan is a traditional Javanese, Sundanese, and Balinese music ensemble in Indonesia that has a pentatonic scale in the SALENDRO and PELOG scale systems. Consists of percussion instruments used in karawitan music. Other names: • Javanese Gamelan (Gangsa), • Sundanese Gamelan (Degung), • Balinese Gamelan (Gambelan).
You got to be there to witness the astounding place, surrounding and ambience. When you wake up in the morning and walking in the ricefield (ubud), and you hear the Bali gamelan from distance, you will fill refresh, tranquility and also bit mystical.. aw man now that's nostalgic.
Balinese gamelan is very dynamic. Javanese gamelan is slower and more meditative. Sundanese gamelan sounds like wind breeze. There are still lots of such compositions in different styles throughout Indonesia, according to the regions and places and the ethnic people who play the gamelan, as well as the philosophy of life which makes the people. Indonesia is very rich in cultures, yet we are one as a nation. We call it Bhineka Tunggal Ika; diversity in unity. Happy exploring! You'll never run out of material to explore 😁
Hi Ellis ... nice to know you ... This is Balineese Gamelan ... one of among alot of Indonesian Gamelan from various region in Indonesia, such as east java, central java, west java, Banten, various area of big & small island like Sumatra , Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku etc, etc (17.000 island) ... imagine ...
it's a Balinese gamelan, if you want to see the original and more complex gamelan you have to look at the Javanese gamelan. Javanese gamelan has more types of instruments used

I hope you can see it all, the art of Indonesian traditional music that can add to your insight into the world of music. good job ellis👍👍👍 🙏🙏
We have Balinese (this video), Javanese and Sundanese. You are great, analyzing modern music and also traditional arent easy and you done it both. Tone is your univers.....
Hi Ellis, they usually perform this gamelan for traditional Bali dance, if you are sitting in front of this group, you will hear it so different, you re gonna love it, strong suggestion to visit Bali, part of Indonesian Archipelago
The guy in the middle who sits a bit higher than everyone else plays a special role called "ugal." He helps signal the players around him, especially during the unmetered sections. That's part of the reason for the exaggerated hand motions. The other part is that it looks cool 😎. Still, in a gamelan (whether of the Balinese, Javanese, or Sundanese variety), there is no real conductor. Every player and every instrument has its own role and responsibility.
Gamelan is a musical instrument that most of the musical instruments are made of metal, so now you understand that Indonesians are "metallica people" 😁😎
Thanks for reaction... If you come to Bali, if you want see the live show this part and this group, please come to Ubud.. see our performance every saturday night at Pura Dalem Ubud..
This is what Alip Ba Ta always do to his guitar.. mimicking sounds like bell sound. He mimicking Gamelan instruments sounds. For example in his Original Song BALINESE.
Ellis, just grab your bag and fly to Bali immediately. You will be hypnotized when you watch it directly with your own eyes and listen with your own ears. It is worth the experience in your life if you are really a musician.
Hii Bro Ellis...gamelan is an Indonesian culture that has existed since the days of the kingdoms in the archipelago, before Indonesia's independence...each region has its own characteristics, gamelan in Java is different from gamelan in Bali...and what needs to be noted, gamelan makers in this world only in Indonesia, where the material is made of bronze or brass, and only expert gamelan makers are able to adjust the tone according to the keys of music in general...
It is the most divine music on the planet in the sense that the complexity really tries to break you out of your mind box. My favourite traditional music in the whole world.
Hi Ellis...balinese gamelan is very dinamic , it is really different from the one comes from Java. You may come to my country and learn about this art. Most foreigner like and admire our tradisional culture.
Ellis..come to Indonesia, enjoy a variety of Indonesian traditional music, meet the friendly Indonesian people, you will find many things that you don't find anywhere in the world in one package in Indonesia.
Ellis, you better go to Bali to see & hear the gamelan clearly and you can ask the expert there. From Bali, you can go to Central Java to see & hear Javanese gamelan. I think you'll feel amazed by the gamelan

You should listen to gamelan live, the sound is INCREDIBLE. Its very loud, the lows are very majestic. Powerful instruments. Plus theres a mystical conotation to them, youre not allowed to step over the instruments etc.
It's Balinese Gamelan and those people are not just practicing it for the show, but it's kinda way of life or tradition. Most [if not all] kids are learning to dance and play gamelan every day. I know this because I live in Bali 😜 There are other types of Balinese gamelan which made of bamboo called Rindik. Also other places in Indonesia have different types of gamelan, like in Java and North Sulawesi called Kolintang [although it's different than the traditional gamelan as I think it's from the colonials influence. Not sure either 😉] If you have time, spend few months of even a year in Indonesia to see and learn about lots of 'new' things, such as foods, musics, languages, costumes, dances, etc etc. Or even better if you probably can collab with Indonesian artisan. Cheers!

For everybody whose wondering, the leader is the one whose holding the drum or kendang, every tone base on his command, you can hear the space between his play which gave command to the other player
