when I start the easy installer it says too little space on the system additions then I remove everything and it says "system additions has the correct name bt does not have the expected contents click continue then try inserting a different disk with this name or click stop to stop any further installation"

I'm guessing you're looking for System 6: macintoshgarden.org/apps/macintosh-system-6x When in doubt, Macintosh Garden (or Macintosh Repository). Apple used to have a handy page for all this, but Apple used to be cool, too.

Yeah, I think you get too big, and you waste disk space. But, then, if you need more, you just make another disk image, heh. Yeah, some Macintosh Garden files require System 7's Stuffit versions. Some images also need stuff like Disk Copy 6.x or DiskDup+ or even Toast, even for stuff that works in System 6, like Dubbelmoral, among many others. It's not bad if you have other emulators set up, but if you only have Mini vMac set up, yeah, it's a pain.

Yeah, I think you're right. I think what I did was I bundled the rename with the initial disk setup. I think. Been a while since I've done this video, so not entirely sure on the reason. Regardless, always good to have some more pointers!

Well, Mini vMac's default emulation is a Macintosh Plus, so, the resolution is 512 by 342 monochrome. I'll admit, I'm not familiar with the ZX Spectrum. If this show gets more popular and/or I get a steady job, I do hope to get more familiar with platforms I didn't use in my youth.

No problem, glad I could help. :3 Thankfully, Mini vMac is probably the easiest to set up. Some games require different builds, but, for the vast majority of B&W System 6 games, the default setup works just fine. The most accurate old Macintosh emulation actually comes from an emulator called MESS, but...ehh, good luck on that route, setting that up is a nightmare, not to mention it's a massive resource hog. My dual-core 2.4 GHz MacBook runs that at about...70% speed emulating a Macintosh II. Yeah.

If you're talking about the Mac Plus ROM, you don't have to load it. Just make sure it's called "vMac.ROM" and in the same folder as Mini vMac itself.

That's what I'm doing. It just won't detect it. Could it have to do with me using mac? (ps. thanks for responding so quickly)

I don't know how new your version of Mac OS is, though it's possible. Here's a link to the Mini vMac page specific to these issues: www.gryphel.com/c/minivmac/osx_note.html Apparently later versions of Mac OS X, especially Sierra, Mac OS 10.12, cause some issues that have to be worked around. Considering when I made this, I don't think Sierra was even out yet at the time.

Ah, don't you worry. At least someone's asking legitimate questions, rather than calling me a twat because 'it didn't work'. :) As for the first question, today I learned Mini vMac supports drag and drop. I feel dumb that I didn't know this. But, doing some digging, at actually appears so (I was about to say it didn't!): "When Mini vMac is launched, it can automatically mount disk images named “disk1.dsk”, “disk2.dsk”, up to “disk6.dsk”. Mini vMac will normally look for them in the folder containing the application. In the Mac OS X version, if the “mnvm_dat” folder exists it will look there, in the same way it looks for the ROM image. In the X version, if an argument of the form “-d [directory_path]” is used on the command line, Mini vMac will look in [directory_path] instead. In the Macintosh version, disk1.dsk and so on files may be aliases. In the Windows version, they may be shortcut files. Mini vMac stops at the first image not found, i.e. if there is no “disk2.dsk”, it won’t open “disk3.dsk”, even if it exists." As for copying to the hard disk, there are some utilities for getting files on and off of Mini vMac, along with unpacking files in the emulator: www.gryphel.com/c/minivmac/recipes/sys6util/index.html I have disk images in BasiliskII, so I end up using HFVExplorer and BasiliskII to get files over, though I seem to recall the above utilities working just fine, too. Okay dude, I did everything you said...one thing confuses me 5:03 you re-open the mac os file and there is already files on it.... I'm trying to play some old games and whenever I drag and drop them It says not a floppy disk and it asks to erase everything. Also if I goto the system folder and try to open any files it says busy or missing? Really confused, and yes I have stuffit.bin in the VMac folder and the game.

TheCluelessRU-vidr ~ It depends...if you're running these in Mini vMac, don't worry about it. It won't do anything to your emulated Macintosh. However, if you're running these on a real Mac (or just feel like you want to clean off nVIR in Mini vMac, just in case), look for a program called 'Disinfectant', either on the Macintosh Garden or System 6 Hell. It'll clean things right up.

It's definitely possible there's a faster way to do this, especially by now. This video's years old, and some of the links are dead, especially Apple's old software site that no longer exists, because Apple is on a quest for me to like them less and less as time goes on, I guess. If nothing else, hopefully the basics are still the same and the tools are all still helpful. The Macintosh Garden ( macintoshgarden.org ) is still your best bet on finding everything.

+Eduardo GS Two likely possibilities spring to mind, either an incorrect version of Mini vMac is being used (say, a 32-bit version on a 64-bit system) or the Macintosh ROM you have is for the wrong computer or invalid altogether. Unless you compile a custom Mini vMac version, you're going to want a Macintosh Plus ROM.

I've tested the 64 and 32bits versions and no one worked, so the rom must be the problem then, I'll check later

That's actually not a bad idea. I'll see about that when I get home and append the description accordingly. I believe I made a folder just for this tutorial I never got rid of, so it might actually be pretty quick. I'll try to have that up by tomorrow. Still, if you know the processes, it'll help with any additional software and other emulators, so I'd recommend being familiar with it.

nVIR won't do anything to a Windows system. It really won't even do anything to an emulated Macintosh. If you're running things on an actual Mac, though, I'd put a program called Disinfectant on the drive. Even if you did get it on a real Mac, though, nVIR isn't exactly the worst virus in the world. It'll mostly be a nuisance until you get rid of it.

+Junior Blitz First off, thank you for actually acting a constructive question. A lot of the links have changed, and I have people calling me names rather than asking a question. So, to answer, "System Startup" and "System Additions" are just Disk 1 and Disk 2 of the 1.4 MB disks. If you were installing on a real Mac Plus, you'd have to use the 800K floppy images, but since Mini vMac can just take any size images, well, we're taking the easier way. :3 Though, you could download the four 800K images, the end result is the same. Another tip, the Macintosh Garden is your friend. Here's a sit file with ready-to-mount disk images, contained in a .sit file. macintoshgarden.org/apps/macintosh-system-6x The problem with making a tutorial for this sort of thing is that links are subject to change...thankfully, the process stays about the same, once you find everything!

Well, "Gnop!" seems to be one of the (unfortunately many) files on the Macintosh Garden that requires post-System 6 software to uncompress. At least, I assume that's your problem here. You didn't give me much to go on. One solution is to use SheepShaver and a newer version of Stuffit Expander to uncompress, and use BasiliskII as a middleman to get it to Mini vMac. Tends to be my method, but I already have all three set up. Or, for quite a few System 6 games, you can go to System 6 Hell (link is in the description, under Step 6). There, the games are in convenient, ready to mount disk images, and each game only needs to be dragged to where you want it. "Gnop!" is among the games there. Much easier. However, you may want to disable your antivirus for a bit before downloading any .dsk files. I have Avast, and if I download any .dsk files with it on, it'll completely corrupt them, for whatever reason.

Well, like I said, System 6 Hell has "Gnop!" on a disk image that'll mount right in Mini vMac. No BasiliskII or even Stuffit Expander required. :3 But, I may do a tutorial on BasiliskII and SheepShaver in the future. We'll see. I started with a tutorial on Mini vMac because it's the easiest to set up, so it was the easiest to explain.

You...drag the folder to the trash can? Mini vMac doesn't exactly hook itself into anything.

Step 6, there's a link. To a zip and a bin file. The bin file's probably best to download, use HFVExplorer and get that into Mini vMac.

To clarify, this would be in the description, under Step 6. All the links are there. If the file's getting corrupted or messed up when you download it, anti-virus might have something to do with this.

MrWillempjuh You don't have to extract the sea files. "sea" is for Self-Extracting Archive. Meaning, all you have to do is run them.

+Gabriel Coan You don't really mount .sit files. You'd need to get Stuffit Expander onto your vMac disk image and uncompress the sit file with that. I'm not familiar with file transfer on Android Mini vMac, though.

Really...? A quick Google search for "Macintosh Plus ROM" gets me a GitHub and archive.org page with a bunch of 'Old World' Macintosh ROMs. It's not like Apple's pulling these things down.

I'm not sure of Mini vMac's compatibility or lack thereof with Sierra. My Mac OS experience only goes to Mountain Lion, I believe. Best of luck! Just remember to copy the Mac Plus ROM and call the copy you put in the folder with the emulator "vMac.ROM" (without quotes, obviously)
