While some retro gamers may dislike Nintendo, there's still quite a few people who actually do like Nintendo. But what about playing nothing but Nintendo games exclusively? Is that going too far and what does it even mean for a game to be a Nintendo game? I answer all these questions and more!

For a guy that grew up with the NES, Genesis , PS1, Xbox. I have no particular slant to one company over another. I just love good games and few bad ones.
@DonnyKirkMusic
@DonnyKirkMusic 3 года назад
Exactly. Latching onto a 90s console-war mentality is so annoying and elitist to do now especially with emulation being a thing, so you can switch between console libraries at will and have a vast amount of options to choose from; you don't need to dedicate your life to some single game company.

I have been a video game collector since 1977 when the original Atari 2600 debuted back in the day. My father purchased a new Ford Mustang on the west coast and received a free Atari 2600 that I still own to this day. The unit is stamped on the bottom as not for resale demo unit for some reason... Fast forward to around 1986 and I purchased my first original NES... I have been truly a Nintendo fanboy since its inception. After many consoles and games later, anything Nintendo related has been truly magical for the most part. Hard to explain, but for some reason, Nintendo has a touch like no other when it comes to making the most awesome games on the planet!!! Just my two cents and I will remain a Nintendo fanboy forever!!! Now I must go and update my PS & XBOX!!!

Sony having LittleBigPlanet (always a good family friendly game) and Ratchet (started parodying superheros/businesses, then went cinematic family film style and went down hill to social media/babying the player with the 2016 game, the new one will just be like the cinematic family film style again, which is fine, will have to see if it doesn't still have an identity crisis for a family friendly game series). Their other series that are family friendly seem in limbo (Jak, Sly, Wip3out who even knows at this point, Knack didn't go so well but was still fairly fun I found) or for TV/Movies, and Japan Studio did some creative stuff but their gone so... Sure I guess Astrobot and Concrete Genie also count as recent examples but Astro is more like what London studio makes, hardware showcases (PSVR, PS Camera, Dualsense) and Concrete Genie is an interesting game from a smaller studio but with Sony's focus on bigger Mature titles these are rare modern examples from them. Microsoft gave up after the OG Xbox, somewhat 360 I find, with Blinx, Voodoo Vince I guess though more for Teens, Blue Dragon and a few others from third parties, but in a modern era they only have really Psychonauts for modern IPs. I'm excited for Psychonauts 2 and they have said they are considering family friendly IPs or even focusing on Japan but I've yet to see it and don't really believe their claims just yet, for Japan it will be the big deal ones like Namco and Sega still and the family friendly IPs will stay as third parties that just happen to be on all platforms. Fable could count but that's more for teens still. Even Gran Turismo and Forza while for everyone are still more aimed at Racing fans or those like me that grew up with them that enjoy a good racing sim/arcade racer, maybe kart racers. Third parties on the Japanese and West side (the AA's/Indies like Hat In Time, Yooka Laylee as modern examples) do a good job and obviously appear on either console, I mostly jump to these for my fix. And Nintendo's cover a lot of different genres and family friendly but still fun as an adult feeling fun to play I find (not that the other family friendly ones for PS/Xbox aren't fun for adults but the focus at least for many of their games is noticeable). And I started as a PlayStation gamer after all and explored Xbox early on, Nintendo more so from scratch and Retro/Third Parties more over time. In many cases you do get obviously adult theme stories or not and in many Western family friendly games and movies/TV series (depends of course) but they do feel different to Japanese or many Western Indies at least that go for that full family friendly no extra deeper stuff with the story and focus on the gameplay as much as possible.

You know what..... I used to be a huge Nintendo fanboy. I admit! Nintendo was my hero. I would occasionally play a Playstation game like Crash or Final Fantasy, but my heart was with Nintendo. Then the Wii era came.... I wasn't impressed with the graphics and awesome 1st party games were few and far between. Sometimes even lackluster. Then Nintendo's 2008 E3 conference came and it ERADICATED MY SOUL. I was so pissed when they finished off with Wii Music that I remember buying a PS3 later that week and diving deep into Fallout 3. Since gaming on PS3 and PS4, Nintendo has been sidelined as the console that I'll play once in a while. I've played AMAZING games like NieR: Automata, Yakuza 0, Persona 5, DOOM 2016 and those games have made me feel fulfilled and CHANGED MY LIFE. Going back to Nintendo games just feel lackluster and uninspiring. It's just the same thing I've seen a million times now. And that makes me so sad.

I used to be one of those. As a kid I was a Nintendo fanatic. I refused to play non-Nintendo systems, and I tried to get every game made by Nintendo and Rare. But then the Wii came out when I was in college. At first I was really excited for it, but they would slowly trickle out games from their old IPs, while coming out with a lot of what felt like fleshed out tech demos with Miis. (Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Music, Wii Fit, etc.) It felt like they had abandoned their core fans in favor of chasing after the suburban mom demographic. By 2008 I thought I'd give them one more chance and see what gets revealed at E3. That year's E3 was a complete disaster for Nintendo with tons of cringe moments and almost none of their classic IPs even being brought up. I was so fed up with them that I bought a PS3 (Which was a big deal for me at the time), and have only bought a few Nintendo products since then. Today I enjoy a much wider depth and variety of games than I had been exposed to back then. It was such a limitation being brand loyal. Now I'm mostly a PC gamer and couldn't be more satisfied. I still enjoy emulating the games I grew up with from time to time when I need a hit of nostalgia though.

Since the NES was introduced, I've only owned Nintendo consoles with 2 exceptions. A Genesis my wife gave me for Christmas and a PS2 we got my son for a birthday. Still have the PS2, used only for Rock Band. It's not that we don't like other systems, our budget simply didn't allow for buying more than 1 of any generation. Sometimes it didn't even allow for buying ANY of a given generation. (Virtual Boy, Game Cube, N64, WiiU are all ones we skipped) Currently a Switch, that PS2, and a RetroPie satisfy all our gaming needs. Almost forgot, Christmas brought me an AT Games Legends Gamer Pro, too.

I have been telling all my friends that I only play Nintendo since I was in grade school, but I guess what I really mean is the only consoles I feel confident enough to buy are Nintendo ones. It's always been about the consistency of quality releases from the big N that keeps me coming back, for better or for worse. The first party games are almost always right up my alley, and the 2nd and 3rd party stuff provides a sense of variety that I haven't had with other consoles in the past. I've never been into buying every console of the generation, because I've always said that if I can't keep up with ONE console's library, why would I try to keep up with 3? Not only that, if a game was really worth it, it would be a multiplatform release. The first and only way I've experienced Metal Gear Solid is through the gamecube Twin Snakes, and that's good enough for me.

I'm someone who plays almost exclusively games on Nintendo products. I don't really care who the company that made the game is, but Nintendo hardware is something special. One of my favorite recent experiences was importing the Famicom version of Metal Storm and it has become one of my all time favorite games. Nintendo games have a tightness and polish to them that in a lot of ways feel unmatched. I've loved plenty of other series and systems, Shadow of the Colossus was a favorite growing up. But as time goes on and I become busier and older, Nintendo games scratch that "pick up and play" itch that I crave..

I used to only play Nintendo systems myself until January 2015, when I got a PS Vita. Two months later I picked up a PS4 and I eventually got an Xbox One, a PS3 and some retro consoles and games. Together with my Switch and Wii U, my home consoles serve different purposes (i.e.: my Wii U is my main Virtual Console machine, my Xbox One is my main backward compatible machine). That being said, whenever the same game comes out for all three big systems, I almost always prioritize the Nintendo version. Almost. I hate the GamePad restrictions of the Wii U so much it was enough for me to switch to the non-Nintendo version, even if it means giving up not worrying about achievements

Great video and topic! It made me wonder whether I have a collecting philosophy. I enjoy owning "highly regarded games" as opposed to games from specific companies, but even that has its own shortcomings. For one, I end up collecting across a massive array of systems, which can get annoying from a storage and video / power cable rat's nest perspective. I also realized I tend to gravitate towards certain genres: 2D fighting games, STGs, and JRPGs. But even then, I'm more likely to pick up a fighting game developed or published by SNK rather than by, say, Arc System Works. I'm also really into the Fire Emblem series, so I collect those games even though I don't have a passion for any other Nintendo franchise. I like playing games on original hardware in the best possible video resolution, but I'm totally happy using a flash cart. In other words, I own a Neo Geo AES that I play on a Sony PVM, but I don't feel the need to spend hundreds of dollars on individual carts when I could just use a NeoSD. With all that in mind, I guess my ultimate criteria when adding to my gaming collection is: does it look cool and have I read / heard good things about it?
@RetroBirdGaming
@RetroBirdGaming 3 года назад
I think I have a pretty similar philosophy to you. That sounds really accurate to how I think (but just swap out some of the different genres and series). Also, opting for a flash cart instead of collecting AES carts is totally reasonable! Especially if you want some of the popular games like Metal Slug. Yikes those prices!

I was Nintendo only for about 10 years. Then around 1997 Symphony of the Night convinced this Castlevania fanatic to buy a PS1. And I bought a Neo Geo also that same year for the Bloodlines cartridge (completed college and was making more money). Then I branched out to Tomb Raider, was able to play Megaman 8, and it was all good. Nintendo is still more than 90% of my collection though.

That was essentially me for a good portion of my life, I was actually worse than that, because I only played Mario games, and occasionally, licensed games based on cartoons and movies I liked. I eventually tried pokemon, but not because it was Nintendo, but because I saw the anime on TV and I was very much under it's spell. I was a little loosey goosey though, I did play things that were associated loosely with Mario. Donkey Kong Country for example, and Banjo Kazooie because it's extremely loose ties to Mario through Diddy Kong Racing... I only got one video game per Christmas, and Birthday, and my family didn't rent games often. So I was very averse to taking risks and stuck with what I knew I liked, which was Mario. I actually did love Sonic though. I spent a few months trapped at my Aunt's House and all she had was a Sega. I didn't really "get" the concept of console wars, and all I knew was that Sonic felt good to play, just like Mario. He runs, he Jumps, what more do I need? It wasn't until Super Smash Bros brought Mario and Pokemon together that I started thinking "Huh, you know maybe I SHOULD try these other franchises.", it helped that when the game came out, I had a good friend who was willing to lend me the N64 games he wasn't playing, so I got my introduction to Zelda, Kirby, and Star Fox on the N64, plus he taught me how to do emulation. I found it uncomfortable to play on a keyboard but I did manage to beat Super Metroid and EarthBound.. By the time the Wii came around my tastes really expanded and I used the Wii more for virtual console than for actual Wii games. I was also checking out a lot more third party series but I was still a massive Nintendo fanboy and only ever owned Nintendo consoles, and I tended to only really be interested in, as you put it, "nintendoey" franchises. Lots of platformers, cartoonish stuff, the occasional less cartoonish things but with strong ties to Nintendo, like classic Castlevania, Joe n Mac, ect. As for Smash Bros, I do feel like third party characters are getting a bit out of hand, and we have far too many characters that don't really have much of a connection to Nintendo. Like Mega Man and Castlevania were pillars of the NES, Dragon Quest wouldn't be marketed in the west at all if not for Nintendo, Banjo was essentially the face of the N64, but Joker? Cloud? Snake? I don't care if they're icons, they don't belong there... those are like playstation mascots... Then we have people saying that there's no more first party characters left who are worth having on the roster... and that's just not true. It feels like the third parties are making people dismiss the idea of B or C list characters like Dixie Kong, Impa, or retro characters like Mach Rider, Mike Jones, Lip, or the kids from Aonuma's last non Zelda game, Marvelous: Another Treasure Island. As a Nintendo fan it bums me out that Nintendo characters arent even on most peoples radar for newcomers these days unless you're another friggin pokemon.

As a child I was a Sega kid (since there were not as many NES games released in Germany). But I wanted a SNES very much. And it was a shock. Back then I thought the games were - as you said - kiddy.. That changed a lot and I really like some Nintendo consoles. On the other hand I Just net some of the Hardliner faction, which question the quality of other consoles and games without really knowing them, which is something I don't understand. Okay I never understood why many people hold the N64 in such a high regard, but thats okay. I had it but I was really underwhelmed by the games back then and needles to say the graphics are hard to watch today.

I played the NES, SNES and Gameboy as a child. I fell away from Nintendo as a teenager during the N64 days, because I was still awestruck by Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 3 (6), and wanted to play Square’s next masterpiece. I ended up discovering things like Ape Escape, Parappa the Rapper, Psychonauts and Katamari Damacy during my PlayStation 1 and 2 days, but as a capital A Adult now, I just don’t find competitive, photo-realistic first person shooters appealing. I would rather play something fun and whimsical, and Nintendo provides more of that than I could ever ask for. These days, the Switch is my favourite thing. It has retro collections, modern incarnations of my favourite games, but it also has Playstationny stuff like Final Fantasy and Katamari Damacy. The indie scene is huge there too. I don’t know if I fall into the Nintendo-only camp the way you described it, but I definitely only collect for Nintendo systems now.

I grew up playing mostly Nintendo and PC games, but have been looking into the Sega Master System lately (primarily because I'm a Lode Runner fanatic and everybody else's Lode Runner games were better than the scrolling screen on Nintendo's version), and by the time the Genesis rolled around Lode Runner wasn't particularly popular. However, looking at other Sega games from the time the color palette on nearly every game I see recommended reminds me of your "kiddy" shot of the gumballs, everything is hypersaturated and there aren't any dark colors (resulting in a lack of contrast) in a lot of those games. It's making it really hard to "pull the trigger" on that particular system. Nintendo games might not be particularly known for being "dark" but, ironically, Sega's games were (generally) actually worse in that regard early on. Edit: I should add that scrolling shooters are a big exception to that, and Sega does them well, but I'm generally not a big fan of the genre.

Another fun video Retro Bird. I can't wait to see the Sega version of this. You can call it, "Sega, the Lost Opportunities" and we can re live Sega mishandling the advertising for Sega CD, not to mention the entire 32X disaster. (Saturn or 32X, just pick one!!!) I am one of those Nintendo only fans. I’ve owned every system at one point or another in my life. On the switch I’ve finally gotten a chance to play some of the great franchises that were long missing from my collections like Witcher and Crash Bandicoot. I have nothing against these other systems it’s just I only have so much free time to play. And Nintendo was my 1st love so it would feel wrong for me to not have their systems. I also really really enjoy their mainline franchises and wouldn’t want to miss out on those unique experiences. If PS, PC or XBOX games were ported over, I would certainly consider playing. It just comes down to having only so much time I can dedicate to games and not wanting to miss those amazing Nintendo experiences.

I'm very mixed on this topic, if you only really like Nintendo games, that's cool by me. But there's also the thing of not willing to branch out just because this thing was made by a different company. As well as claiming to be someone different, like saying "I love all things video games." While only talking and owning Nintendo things, which honestly makes you more of a Nintendo fan than a video game fan. There's always going to be people that truly only like Nintendo, but I really think it's worth giving other companies a shot. If you don't like them, that's perfectly okay with me, all of us are different. Not everyone shares my undying love for the Intellivision, and I'm not gonna throw a fit about it. Also, love that you showed Wario Land here, definitely an underrated game. This may or may not be intentional, but I also like that you have the Wii U gamepad plugged in, the darn thing doesn't seem to last more than a couple hours LOL, great video man!

For your question at the end of the video, yes I only have owned and played Nintendo consoles, and handhelds. My first console was the NES that I owned and played often, and it sort of just continued on after that to every Nintendo handheld/console. I've played other game consoles at friends house, but never got the appeal of them. They always seemed more like an interactive movie, or repeating multiplayer titles that sort of seem the same to me, now that's not to say nintendo doesn't have the same repeating games, but I've always found them more enjoyable than Sony/Microsoft. They(nintendo) seem like actual "video games" to me if that makes sense. I've watched my friends play through other games with long cutscenes, and HD graphics, etc. Sure it looks good, and such but, I've never found it appealing to play myself, but rather just watch as it's not something I want to pick up a controller and play. Multiplayer FPS on consoles, and such just really seem like one of those things where people constantly berate, and troll each other in voice and isn't something I want to participate in. If I was playing them, I'd have to mute the lobby to able to just play. A lot of stigma goes into "Nintendo only" such as, "oh you must be a casual gamer". Not really, I waste just as much time as anyone else does, just with a different console. I know many others that have crazy amounts of hours invested into Zelda BOTW, Splatoon, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Pokemon etc. To each their own though. Also, the "3rd party" titles you were speaking of. I had the most fun with consoles like the Gamecube, and the Switch because of the 3rd party titles that we've been getting. Gamecubes 3rd party like Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, The Sims, etc. Then the switch got Doom, Skyrim, Quake, The Witcher, Civilization 6, Dragon Quest, etc. There are a lot of great games on other consoles, but I mostly like the single player 3rd party type of games, and wouldn't ever trade my Nintendo console out with any of the others or even buy a different one just for a few single player games that I am interested in, because overall Nintendo makes the games I'm interested in playing. I could easily live without the 3rd party ones, but yeah. Hopefully that clears up anyones questions for Nintendo only gamers.

I play basically 97% Nintendo games because consoles are expensive and just playing catch-up with all those games is a huge pain, it's fun, but still a pain. Even as a kid, Mario, Donkey Kong, Pokemon, Kirby, and Smash Bros. (along with a random assortment of Nintendo & PC games) were my absolute jam. Then as I grew up, I started also getting into Zelda, Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, and most recently, Metroid (because little me was terrified of those games). It is true, there are some of what I call "forbidden fruits" (looking at you, SotN), but Final Fantasy VII made it to the Switch in 2019 and I welcomed it with open arms as it "came home" to the Nintendo family and my heart. On the topic of third-party characters in Smash, it's a mixed bag. I can shift from loathing Sonic because of everything he represents, be confused i.e. Terry, be confused and then love them i.e. Richter and Eight, to liking already them i.e. PAC-MAN, to very nearly crying tears of joy when Cloud and Banjo & Kazooie "came home."

New to the channel, great work! Loved the commentary, but could have used about 50 other video examples of Nintendo games other than the few you used. However, I’m primarily Nintendo only because I love the way they pace games and their use of color. This isn’t a unique opinion, but hyper realism with muddy colors does not get me excited about games. I want to live in a cartoon when I play games, I think that’s what makes it fun.

*slowly lowers weapon* 😅 That was a great vid man, I'm a Sega guy mainly b/c that's what I grew up with, but Nintendo games were always very fun and if I could have had all the consoles as a kid I would have. The SNES was right around where it started to click for me, Nintendo games just had a fun factor to them I didn't find anywhere else. I still think the N64 sucks, but when the NGC came out then I got it, Nintendo does their best to make sure their games are fun but also usually a very polished experience...which made me a Big N fan for life. Oh yeah, the Wii U was great!...well imho 🤣

While I don't play exclusively Nintendo, it's still the majority of my time spent gaming. I've found that Nintendo games are just more welcoming and smooth to ease in to than most other games. It's easier to jump into a game of Splatoon and learn the controls than it is Call of Duty for example. As well Nintendo games have this certain charm that seems almost impossible to replicate, and playing a game on my PlayStation 5 just feels weird where as playing a game on my Nintendo Switch feels perfectly natural. Though that might just be because I have so much more experience with Nintendo. With the advent of the seventh generation, it seems most developers went on to make their games as realistic as they possibly could, while Nintendo stuck with their unique artstyles for their various franchises, and I feel that's apart of what makes Nintendo so special to me. Video games are supposed to be an escape from reality, so why would I jump from watching the news of soldiers in Iraq or something straight to a game where I'm a soldier in a gray and brown battlefield mowing down nazis? Nintendo is one of the few to still provide that true escape.

I am not a Nintendo only guy but when it comes to modern games I do tend to support the Nintendo Switch way more than the competition. I do think Nintendo is the best current first party game developer and I like that for the most part the switch games come on the cartridge with much less patching involved. I just think that in the future switch games will be way more playable right off the cart once all the online servers are gone. Some Nintendo Switch 3rd party games do only have part of the content on the cart and require downloading but I don't invest in those titles. Also the console seems to cater to more niche and retro inspired stuff that is compelling to me.

I don’t only play Nintendo games, but I only own Nintendo consoles and the reason for that is the Nintendo games. The Switch is the only current Gen console I play. I bought it for the Nintendo games. I played Mario Odyssey, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Animal Crossing New Horizons, and several others. That’s what got me in the door. But true Nintendo games are few and far between, years and years pass between releases in franchises. So I fill my other time with non Nintendo games on Switch. Over the past 6 months I’ve played The Witcher 3, Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Which, Sonic Mania, Spiritfarer, and Donut County to name a few. Recently, I’ve played more non Nintendo games than Nintendo games on my Switch. And I’ve really loved them. I wouldn’t be strictly against buying the new PlayStation or XBox, but consoles are expensive and I have a whole lot to play on my Switch in the form of ports, 3rd parties, and upcoming Nintendo games. Why drop the $500+? I’ve always been a single console guy because of money primarily, and that single console is almost always Nintendo.
