Gamerz Tek 8-Bit HD NES Clone 5-Years Later - Is It Still Good!?

In this episode, we take a second look at one of my previously favorite clone NES systems of all time, the Gamerz Tek 8-Bit HD
It's hard to believe but the first clone NES console reviews I ever did went live over 5 years ago at this point. That review? The Gamerz Tek 8-Bit HD. In a time when hardware-based clone NES systems with HDMI outputs were still fairly new, this system made a lot of promises for under $25. While I have always felt this was one of the better clone systems out there, are my opinions still the same today?
The 8-Bit HD is available now for around $30 on Amazon, but when I bought it back in 2017 I got it for under $24! It includes the system itself, two original controllers, an HDMI cable, an AV cable, and a dedicated power supply. The power supply is one of the first things I did not like about this system, as it uses its own proprietary barrel-style connector to go into the system. In 2017, micro USB truly was the standard and now in 2022, this stands out like a sore thumb.
The story behind the system is the fact that it is an update of their original 8-Bit system, but much like that console this one only has mono audio outputs. That's not a huge deal as the original NES only had mono output, but if you're going to connect to a CRT or to some kind of a sound system you'll need a Y-adapter to drive sound to left and right channels.
The included controllers are still amongst my favorite from any clone system. They are definitely inspired by the original NES controllers, but they have their own unique design. The squared-off corners are gone, and the controller is more oval-shaped, almost in line with the Nintendo oval around the logo. The A and B buttons are quite clicky, and the d-pad is also really good. The start select buttons are small, round buttons instead of the larger oval shape from the original Nintendo controller. They're functional, but could be a bit larger. One of the downsides of this controller is the cable is only about 6 ft long, and shortly after this console was released other manufacturers started including 10 ft long cables with their controllers.
Getting down to gameplay, one of my go-to tests has always been the first level of Super Mario Bros and how the coins sound. Unsurprisingly, the 8-Bit HD has reverse duty cycle issues, meaning the audio sounds pitched up when collecting coins in Super Mario brothers. It's strange that all of these clone HDMI systems still have this problem when, for the most part, audio out of the previous generation's composite jacks was okay.
From a color standpoint, I felt the tones were definitely muted and under-saturated. In Super Mario Bros I thought the blocks needed more brown tones to them. In Punch-Out, Piston Honda's skin tone looked off. The graphics were sharp, and they were fairly clean, but the palate was just a little bit wrong.
Game compatibility is about what you would expect from something like this. Battletoads still locks up on the second level, that's something all clone systems do. Famicom cartridges worked with the 60-to-72 pin adapter. I did not have any issues with homebrews, ROM hacks, or multicarts, but I don't own an Everdrive for the NES, so that is not something I could test
Why it RoX:
- Under $30
- HDMI output
- Two very good controllers included
- Works with us, Japanese, and PAL games
- Very compact
What could be improved:
- Inaccurate audio
- The color palette is undersaturated
- Short controller cables
- Mono audio output on composite
- Battletoads does not work
Should you buy one?
I will admit it, I definitely romanticized the 8-Bit HD, but for under 30 bucks, you still get a pretty decent system to get your feet back into the NES library! Yes, the audio is wrong, and yes, the color palette is soft, but overall performance is pretty decent for someone who's just looking for a convenient way to play the NES and connect to an HDMI port. I haven't heard from Gamerz Tek in several years, the last consoles they put out were the Super HD 2 and the Mini Gen HD, but clearly, they're still supplying inventory to Amazon so the lights are still on somewhere. I would love to see them come back and revamp this system, add a longer controller cable, enhance the audio, & enhance game compatibility as I do think this is a platform they could build from. But as it is, I still will have a soft spot in my heart for the 8-Bit HD.

Five years ago, after watching all of your videos on the clone consoles (Clone Wars?), I asked for and received a Gamerz Tek 8bit HD from my wife. I also bought their SNES Clone Console. Both are solid and still used, today. Thanks for the advice and reviews!

I love stories like this! I will tell you as good as the systems are on their own, the super HD2 is actually better than both individually. The last time I went to the Portland Retro Gaming expo I actually gave mine to my brother so that he had something to do as he was going through his latest round of chemo

@@RoXolid Full disclosure, I purchased them separately, because I wanted to play the NES carts with an NES style controller. I have original controllers but found your review of the Gamerz Tek controllers convincing. Frankly, they are as good as you stated. I find that I play with their controllers more than my original NES controllers.

Talk about a blast from the past! I still enjoy my 8-Bit Boy HD from time to time, which has many of the same issues as this (but does have a 4:3 switch at least). I agree - the pack-in controllers are surprisingly good.

I love that you went back and looked at a previous review to re-review it, I actually went back in the old RU-vid time machine and re-watched your original video in that video I did notice that the graphics were actually worse than in this video maybe that it came across differently due to a different device capture card or whatever? I love both videos only thing missing from this one is a complete tear down. Oh and I checked out your website again and I noticed you have the n64 region free trays on sale this is great cause a lot of people are buying the new N64 shells in different colors lately so you have them the cheapest I've seen I'll be buying some from you soon!

And i love it how everything plays that i threw at it, (except battletoads) and makes it much better how its budget friendly... Gamerztek brand is owned by the individual who owns Fallout Games, aka Zed. They continually release product on Ebay from their stores. Until more console patents and other clones hit the market, I would venture to think they won't just throw more stuff out there. Their controllers are the best IMO of the 3rd party NES, and they seem to have less issues with actual gameplay vs the Hyperkin NES consoles i've used, but your mileage may vary.

Neat contraption, it's a paper weight though in houses with if not a NES, a NES mini. I prefer either the mini, my copper ouya, or that square "arcade box" used primarily for mame fun. Pretty sure I scored the box for less than 40.. the juiced up sd card was well worth the price for me. Both the box and the ouya are superb for PSP play on the big screen with stuff like Loco Roco (sp?) and even MK Unchained or whichever it is on the PSP lol. The GTA games on both machines require some know how to get semi decent results on PPSSPP.

I have been playing Dragon Warrior I&II for Gameboy Color on PC with the actual cartridge using the GB Operator from Epilogue. I am definitely getting Final Fantasy I&II as well for GBA. I beat it and sold it long ago but it's time again to play once more. All the bugs are worked out now and it rocks. It dumps games and saves as well and writes to some cartridges even. I made a Super Mario Land DX for GBA using Goomba Color on Windows and put it on a crap Pokemon GBA cartridge. I made a couple more from some bad save Zelda OOA and OOS cartridges because Super Mario Land doesn't use save. Now I just need friends to give them to.🙂

I am running out of desk space... So I needed to find a decent NES clone :) I went with the Classiq N. It's not bad coupled with a RetroTink. I have a few real NES consoles, but I just have no place to set them up under my TV (I know, I need fewer consoles. heheh) I did save $5 on the red/black Classiq. It is ugly as a mud fence, but it works with my EverDrive N8. (the Pro complains, of course, because it's a clone) heh. I say if you're short on space and don't want to mod a top-loader, get either the Gamerz Tek or the Classiq N. Forgot to mention, the NES everdrives (don't know about the clones) don't like HDMI. So if you plan to use an Everdrive with the clone, use the AV connection. It's got lots to do with timings and whatnot unfortunately.... at least from the threads I've read about it.
@RoXolid
@RoXolid Год назад
If you're going to use an Everdrive my recommendation is always to go with something like a retropi. If you're just going to emulate and play ROMs anyways a RetroPi will be less expensive

This looks (and sounds) about the same as the Retron HD NES. Which is to say, bad. I would hate to have anyone experience their favorite childhood games again with something like this. The colors and contrast are awful, and the sound is painful on the ears. I see this as $40 towards an AVS, or even just software emulation.

Oh no you can tell em apart night and day, on Retron HD if you play Tmnt 3 you can see Donatello is a bit pinkish than purple... The sounds are way off on games, and when you play Zelda links white tunic looks pink... He's done videos telling em apart. The only positive i give the Retron HD is the looks of the system and the controller. Works heck of a lot better than that Av/HDMI adapter... Thats for sure.
@videogameobsession
@videogameobsession 6 месяцев назад
@@hectorleon465 Both are awful. There used to be good, cheap options in the 90's, with some cheap $10 SOAC. I'll take some like jailbars, over horribly distorted in accurate sound, and garish looking graphics. For anyone who wishes to not ruin their warm fuzzy memories of their childhood NES, I'd only really recommend an original NES, with RetroTINK upscaler, or a RetroUSB AVS (FPGA), for playing original carts on. If playing original carts isn't necessary, I'd recommend the Analogue Pocket w/ Dock.
