Yeah... I shot the sim a lot when I was at Ft Benning. As well as the simunitions village. Maybe I'm wrong, but I always thought they limited our time/days because that sim room was shared between multiple battalions, not for political reasons. Our cadre always wanted us shooting and training as much as humanly possible.
