My friends and I played so much Wingspan when we first got it. I liked how chill it was. But then I bought Wyrmspan, and I just like the theme a lot more. 🐉
It seems like Wyrmspan is finding it's niche with gamers that maybe wanted a little more from Wingspan or just prefer the Dragon theme. I know Daniel had the chance to try Wyrmspan recently and had a really good time with it. -Ryan
I'm not getting rid of lot. Im trying to deep dive the collection and buy less games this summer. But "Kinghill" did make its way to the donation pile. Cool ideas using worker placement and card battling in one game. But it felt half baked. I do hope I see a revised version down the road.
I'm just starting my collection. I was going to buy Gaia Project, but I think I'm going for Age of Innovation instead. Appreciate the heads up on this! If I end up loving it, I may go back and check out OG Terra Mystica and Gaia Project, but with board games, it really seems that sequels almost always are better and there's not a ton of reason to go backwards, unless you're super curious to see how a system evolved.
Yeah I personally don't see much reason to own more than one, but they are all great. I think Age of Innovation is a great place to jump in, though it is a pretty heavy strategic game -- are there other heavier strategic games you enjoy? -Ryan
@RollsInTheFamily I'm almost finished with Jaws of the Lion. I love it, and I feel like I could definitely handle more. I've played lots of RTS and JRPG video games, but after nearly 40 years of that, I'm starting to like the idea of physically having my hands on all the game's mechanics. It provides the same medatative tactile reward you get from a jigsaw puzzle, but it also offers a deeper and more intimate understanding of how every aspect of a game works. You can also cheat or bend the rules if you want much more easily! Anyway, basically, I'm a lifelong video gamer who always loved board games but never had anyone else around who wanted to play them (only child stuff. I did play Magic in high school). I've had Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, and Dominion on my shelf since they came out 20 years ago and have only been able to play each, like, 3 times. There is now this explosion of solo games. I discovered this about a month ago (thanks to good youtubes like yourself). Since then, I have acquired Jaws of the Lion, Under Falling Skies, Maquis, Friday, For Northwood, Warp's Edge, Final Girl, Star Trek Super-Skill Pinball, and like 6 Button Shy games. The Search for Planet X and Marvel Champions arrive tomorrow. Next, I'm considering It's a Wonderful World, Too Many Bones, Burncycle, Ark Nova, Roll Player, Robinson CrusOh my god, there are just so many! But I'm super intrigued by the idea of "perfect information" with little or no randomness, so Terra Mystica might be it. Kanban EV also looks cool. I don't know if I will like it. I am, admittedly an idiot who is bad at puzzles, but I still really love them. I don't like math. I had Night Fighter Ace on my list until I saw how many charts and tables are involved. Given what you've played, I don't think the complexity of Age of Innovation (or other Terra Mystical games) would be an issue. We have a board game swap meet in my area every summer and many people use that to cull and pick up "new" games. This year I sold . . . 1. Gaia Project (I had this game for a few years but I was always frustrated with how the mines go back on your board. It seemed very suffocating instead of fun.) 2. Terraforming Mars (Replaced with Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition. I just liked the action selection and game length better) 3. Dinosaur Island 4. Dinosaur World (Replaced with Tiny Epic Dinosaur. It just seemed like a more streamlined and less fiddly version of the big Dino games) 5. The Reckoners (My game group wasn't interested in playing any longer. So, it never got to the table. Since it has an awkward box size, I was ok with getting rid of it.) 6. Incan Gold (Played out for me. Just got tired of it.) 7. Cubitos (Theme was hard to get into but still enjoy the mechanisms. Then the expansion didn't impress me. Didn't add any player interaction which it should have had.)
I recently reacquired Dinosaur Island. I really missed it after I culled it. Has that ever happened to you? You cull something because you think you're done, but it sometimes finds its way back?
@@petergross7235 That hasn't happened to me yet. I used to be very attached to the games I owned but now I'm ok with having games come and go. I actually enjoy the fine tuning and procurement process. And if a game isn't getting played, say in a couple years, then I'll swap it with something else.
I've had a few times that I end up reacquiring a game due to remembering all the good things about it, but then I play it more and I'm reminded of the parts I didn't like as much, and I end up culling it again. 😂 -Ryan
Unmatched is a hard one for me-my kids love it so I will probably never sell mine, but its not great at 4 and the gameplay is interesting, but feels not engaging enough from my perspective. Thanks for the video as always!
Yeah my kids are too young right now, but it does seem like the kind of game that would work great with kids. I feel like my kids growing older might make me rethink a number of games that I've decided to part with... 😅 -Ryan
Pandemic. I just never enjoyed it. Easy for someone to quarterback the game. Ares Expedition. I liked my one play of it. It just won't hit the table. Codenames duet, air, land, and sea, and mandala. All great games. Just don't need games that can only be played by 2 players in my collection.
Yeah I enjoy Pandemic, but haven't felt the desire to own it over other cooperative games. Haven't tried Ares Expedition, but we both love Terraforming Mars so much, I'm not sure we are that interested in a stripped back version. And I definitely don't get to play 2 player games often these days, but that may swing drastically in the other direction once my eldest son gets older.... -Ryan
