Andrew is not only an iconic character through all your stories and lore, but he's also such a natural on camera. The charisma and chemistry between both of you is unreal. It's no wonder how you've remained such great friends after all these years. Congrats on your friendship.
Those Lord of the Rings movie tie in games were my childhood! I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve put in to both the Two Towers and Return of the King! How dare you have an opinion different than mine 😆 guys you broke my heart!
n_e_e_t I recently played Return of the King on GameCube. It’s rough, but for me it still kept its charm. The good thing about those games is that they only take a day to finish. So for a quick trip down memory lane the replay value is there
When you guys started talking about selling your collections to get a system and a game, it struck a nerve. Back in 96 I sold my SNES and the 75 games I had for it in order to buy the N64 and Mario, while it was good I hated that system and regretted getting rid of SNES collection. In order to play one game.
I did the same thing! Biggest regret of my gaming life. I did enjoy the N64, but the two games I got for it at launch did not make up for the 40 SNES games I had to trade in. But they sold me on the marketing: "It's 64 Bits!!" And my immature brain thought: '64 is four times as much as 16, so it must be four times as good.'
Derek Padula Sorry lad more for what I did and I hoped no one else did. At least some can be recovered these day, by digital means, yet some are lost to the ages or eBay.
I enjoyed the N64 but man, the releases were slow as fuuuuu compared to the ps1. I was so jealous of the sheer amount of games in the play station section.
Johnny, I absolutely loved the Two Towers video game. Played it when I was 10 years old. I enjoyed it so much I did all the bonus content at the end of the game lol
WHAT!!?? My friends and I looking back LOVE all that generations Lord of The Rings hack and slash's...legit that was a staple game for my friends and I in elementary school
I actually really enjoyed both the Two Towers and ROTK games on the PS2. Maybe I just have my nostalgia goggles on from when I was younger lol, but I definitely had a good time when it first came out.
It's not just nostalgia. Those games were highly praised as some of the best games of their respective years. I don't know what their beef is, but Johnny and Andrew's opinion is unpopular to the point i've never seen it before.
@@albertzinger7132 Yeah, both are excellent. If you like hack & slash and LOTR, there is none better. I'm guessing John just doesn't like games like GOLDEN AXE, or just wasn't in the mood for a slick hack & slash game.
@@albertzinger7132 I guess Johnny is not flawless like we thought. He called orcs "demons" and then says there's "no elegance" even though there's tons of combos and characters, parrying and countering, specific match ups for light and heavy attacks, melee and ranged attacks... All with smooth controls and decent graphics. Impressive for a licensed game
Man, that talk about selling your whole collection for a game/system, oof. I remember doing that, but I was lucky and hit it out of the park getting Goldeneye :p
Hey, I liked two towers. Return of the King was much better though. You get to play as gandald, the hobbitses, and the main three in aragorn, legolas and gimli.
Aww man I loved those EA LOTR games when I was 10 when they came out hahah. Played it a lot with my friends co-op back then, because we were just way into those movies.
Lol Johnny I loved The Two Towers game, it actually gets better later into the game when you start unlocking new moves and abilities not to mention different characters and levels. I remember way back then first playing it not knowing if I'd like it because they just throw you in an epic battle and you don't know what to do. When you beat the game you unlock one of my favorite modes and its Sauron's Tower, it's an endurance mode up Sauron's Tower fighting wave after wave of enemies picking up small items as you go and it gets harder and harder, if you make it to the top you fight Sauron apparently but I've never made it, fun two player co op
it was great to see the story that you have told a long time ago about getting a friend agitated in Double Dragon by attacking his character in it and now have your buddy here to give his reaction from it. This type of video is great and reminds us of what makes video games so much fun. Keep up the good work.
I'm glad you have concent where you talk organically and genuinely, showing that you are not only friends but actually gamers. Nothing here is just being said for the sake of saying it. Love your videos.
Thats so interesting you didn't like Lord of the Rings Two Towers. I have very fond memories of that game in my first apartment back in the day. Also has a 87% Metacritic.
Yeah I'm surprised anyone has THAT negative reaction towards the Two Towers game. I can get not liking it because its simple hack & slash but I don't see whats so torturous about it.
@@spawncalibur1022 It was that we couldn't get past that auto-death-if-you're-not-fast-enough escape level! And once the music latched in our brains as its own theme song, the game was forever encoded into our gamer DNA as something we hate (justifiably or not).
This video is really heart warming. You can tell there is real history between you guys. It’s so fun watching you guys reminisce. Makes me miss the friends I grew up with. This video shows it’s not just talking about games it’s the passion and HCG has it! Can’t wait to see what your channel has in 2020.
Lol 10:53 - 12:04 Johnny is still doing this today to his subscribers!! To many must buy positive review recommendations for modern games on this channel, but I’ve learned to just watch this channel for johnnys reactions and feel good vibes, not to take what he says or his recommendations so seriously...
John I'd just like to say, as a long term viewer who rarely comments, I love your work and really appreciate what you've done here over the years. You're a staple of my daily entertainment and your overall positivity (apart from this video 😂) is very refreshing in the community and really gives off a humble vibe that means a lot to me. All the best for 2020, and thank you again.
Oh man I remember the Two Towers on the Gamecube. Pretty sure my parents considered putting me in an anger management class after hearing the amount of swearing coming from my room back then lol. Just thinking of that Helm's Deep part where you have to defend this huge gate while getting constantly beaten up by enemies coming in from out of frame still makes my blood boil a bit
I liked Zillion II as well, although I did have to persevere the first level too. After that you just get the game and there is fun to be had. The first Zillion though is better.
Once I beat that game, I thought "Well, I will never play this again," and immediately sold it or traded it in. It was a fine LOTR version of Final Fantasy X, but all the story beats were cliché and the characters were pretty shallow LOTR main storyline clones. The Balrog fight was amazing though, and still the only real fond memory I have of the game.
One of the most underrated games of all time imo. Nobody ever talks about it but ilo it's brilliant. Sure its a copy of FFX, but what the hell. If you're gonna copy, take from the greats! It had an even better leveling and combat system imo. So fun to learn skills. I despise grinding but the Third Age is one of those 1 in a 1000 games that I will grind just for the sake of it, cause it's so fun
That’s hilarious. I had great memories playing two towers and return of the king with friends as a kid. It’s been years since I’ve played them. I wonder if they where actually any good or not lol.
That's how we got stuff back then ^_^ Music, Movies, Games.. Look at box, read title, look at price.. "yeah that sounds and looks cool".. That's how I got my youthanasia album with megadeth, boy was my intuition spot on! :D
Am I tripping or.... isn’t there a good LOTR game on the GameCube or Xbox? I remember playing one and loving it so much. It can’t be the one they’re talking about can it? 🤔🤔🤔🤔
All the LotR games of the PS2 era were amazing. Two Towers, Return of the King and Third Age. Plus if you played on PC you had Battle for Middle Earth 1 & 2. Even Tactics was kinda fun. The only sucky one was the Fellowship of the Ring.
I had to have a go at Zillion 2 after hearing this. I actually acquired both Zillion games, gifts from a friend, in the late 1990s, but never put much time into them. First, I'll say it was probably the wrong choice to have one of those scrolling bike levels to be stage one. It's definitely tough at first, though easily exploitable. I can definitely see it being tougher for kids to figure out. As for the game, overall, it's okay. It's quite simple. And I can understand why it would be disappointing to those who liked the first Zillion. However, I can see how some people might have found the first Zillion to be too complicated, with all the symbols, searching, and ID card stuff. So I can see why Sega wanted to try something different as well. I am surprised to hear that Andrew hated the game almost right away. Back in those days, when getting games was somewhat rare, it was common to go back to playing after a poor first impression to find something fun in it, or to just adapt to what it requires. I've had plenty of occasions when I'd get games and would think it was not so good or too hard as a first impression, but going back to it later in the day or the next day provided a different experience. Then again, I definitely owned and rented games that I never liked, so that happens too.
Hey Johnny and Andrew. I spent hours drawing out and mapping all of the world of Simons Quest, i loved that game. But, like you I literally confronted a brick wall ( or rock cliff in this instance) and was unable to proceed. I evently got the idea of going into Coles bookstore and searching through a Nintendo hint book. "Oh yeah, equip the red crystal and kneel in front of a cliff for 10 sec", why didn't I think of that, how obvious. Still love the game to this day though, very nostalgic.
I Own Lunar from back in the day I loved it, but if I had to sell my collection at time to be able to get and play I would have such disdain if not hate for it then. (however I was in Jr High when Lunar came out so spare money was more plentiful cause I had a job) I loved our sub to Nintendo power and I was lucky never having to call the hotline, My Dad was a big gamer and called it himself for those games LOL. (my dad is now in 70's and still plays all the old games)
couldnt get Final Fantasy I know i KNOW!? heres da frikkin prob! After dude builds the Giant Tank, stops!? Why, you had da frikkin room!! Lunar 2 same thing!!
Randomly watching some HCG episodes and stumbled across this one. Before watching, figured I’d mention that I own both those shirts you guys are wearing. Awesome lol
I just wanted to say that because of this video I sat down and tried playing Zillion II, I've had the game since 09 and never really gave it a chance. After a few hours with it I can say it's a pretty good game, I actually beat it, it's not a very long game only 8 stages long. You need to play it untill stage 5 at least, you can turn into a flying mecha kinda thing and the game has some cool shmup sections.
@3:20...”you knew within 30 seconds...” 😂🤣😂 omg guys I can TOTALLY relate! I’m the same age as you and I can’t think of an example off hand because I’m laughing so hard. But the frustration and bitterness in that quote is so damned funny and sincere!! Lmao Great video!
OMG seriously!? I felt you on Lunar after you discussed selling your collection to get it, but the Lord of the Rings hack n' slash games were some of my favorites from back when I was younger lol
Dude.... lord of the rings two towers and return of the king on the ps2 was a good game for me. I loved the fire arrows from legolas and when he shot two arrows at a time.
I finally beat my childhood favorite NES game a few days ago.. The Guardian Legend!!! Through the miracle of save-states i no longer have to deal with those over complex passwords that rarely ever seemed to work..lol
Thats one of my favourite games aswell to me its just as fun playing it now as back then, im so happy for you to beat it. Those damn over complex passwords was a curse back then hehe.
The Return of the King game was awesome, and The Two Towers wasn't that bad...There are so many worse move tie-ins! But wow that story had me in tears 😂😂😂
Just cleaned out a closet today and I found all of my old Sega Genesis stuff!! 1st edition console, 2 controllers, 32X adapter and 30 games!! It all still works!! eBay, here I come!! Maybe.....
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete are infinitely better than the Sega CD versions. I feel bad that people were first introduced to the series by those versions of them, and possibly soured on ever giving any a shot again, since the remakes were drastically different experiences.
@@jboo8966 Same here. Me and my brother are actually currently playing through Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete, and prior to that beat Silver Star Story Complete for like the sixth time. lol
This is a great gaming channeling. Not just always negative and angry but................not just loving everything because you're supposed to. Just like news: we need things that just keep it down the middle.
I didn't own the two towers. But I had Return of the King on the PS2 and I always thought this game was awesome. I get nostalgic about how cool this game was! The combos, and upgrades, etc. Maybe it plays different (looks the same!) but I enjoyed it, personally. It's interesting to see a whole different take on this one.
Simons quest has its flaws but I love it. Definitely in my top 5 on the nes. Simons Quest and Zelda 2 were the games that sparked my interest in action role playing games.
NES Back to the Future. I was a little kid obsessed with the movies at the time. I had to play the game, and I was too young to really know better right away. That game was a fantastic lesson in disappointment.
Zillion 2 was great. Even my friend used to come over to play it. Good paced action.. I don't like zillion 1 with its sluggish controls and confusing layout
The Zillion series has some of the best music of all time; Zillion 1 was epic and underated. So cool the Sega light phaser was modeled after the Zillion gun. Would love to see the series revitalized.
Legend of Dragoon. Got to the disc 3(?) final battle with Lloyd. Got my ass handed, because didn't know he had 'counter-trigger' for Dragoon form (and the Buster.) It's not the battle, or that I lost what frustrated me so much because I have played A LOT of RPG's at that point. It was the game itself that pissed me off. So after I lost to Lloyd I finally asked myself "Do I really care about what is beyond this fight?" the answer was "No", After that I have never touched the Legend of Dragoon again.
@@billycausey9848 It didn't fall off a cliff at all. There are actually a ton of great anime that have come out in the past decade. The SAO clones are a problem but you can find certain gems in that genre too. The medium is doing great. There is something for everyone and the sheer quality of the stories and production value has gone up a lot. Mecha is a bit weird these days but good mecha shows exist.
Johnny should watch Magical Circle Guru Guru(2017) if he hasn't. Its a JRPG parody comedy with a bandana wearing blonde kid. I can't help but think of Johnny when watching that anime. lol
Wow, I can totally relate to the SegaCD+Lunar thing: I sold my MegaDrive/MegaCD collection to afford a SNES in order to play Chrono Trigger. And even if I still think Chrono is one of the best JRPGs of all time, there's now way I'll pay 500+ euros to rebuy some of my favorite ones such as Lunar and Snatcher. But i "miss them" a lot.
My most hated game is Dragon: Bruce Lee Story for SNES. It was 1995, I was 7 years old, and my parents were in a generous mood that day and said I could get a new video game. Awesome, that’s a rare but precious opportunity for lil 7 year old me. I knew exactly what I wanted, Mortal Kombat 2, it was all the rage back then and I remember playing it at my cousin’s house and loving it. So I look around for the “Dragon” on the cover of the box because that’s what I remembered the game case looking like(I forgot the name of the game), but couldn’t find it. Then mom said “there’s Dragon written on this one”, I look and see who I thought was Liu Kang on the cover and thought it was MK2 and told my mom to buy it. Gets home and......instant regret, it was Dragon: Bruce Lee story, basically an inferior fighting game compared to SF and MK, and it was very difficult as well. I still never finished it to this day. It was suppose to be MK2 dammit!!!
Reminds me of a quest I am on. Has anyone ever come across the "Script-book" that the 1-900 NINTENDO help line operators had? I have seen clips of the binder with FAQs and solutions for all NES games but I have never even heard of one coming up on the open market. Does anyone have a lead here?
