Games Workshop featured on TV in 1984. Oldhammer at its finest! A must watch for every Oldhammer fan! Games Workshop appeared on TV in 1984. The TV feature was presented by the legendary author and comedian Ben Elton. Elton introduces gaming then goes on to play Dungeons and Dragons with Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson.
Elton films sequences in the Games Workshop first store in London and interviews staff and customers. Incredibly you can see original artwork on the walls of Livingstone's office!
We have digitally enhanced and increased the video resolution but there are obvious limitations.

In 1984, I had been playing D&D for 4 years already and lugging my rule books from one duty station to the next while teaching my room mates how to play on those long watches in the barracks on the week ends. It was great back then when D&D was some kind of secret mystery world that you only shared with your geek friends.

The same thing to some extent would happen with the majority of companies that go from small independent affairs to multi national billion pound corporations. In that process they inevitably lose their ability to do whatever they want as the bosses are not technically in charge anymore, the shareholders are and shareholders want profits and sustained profits every quarter. If they don't get that then you start getting votes of no confidence in the management and so that ends up seeing the management doing whatever they can to keep shareholders happy. Some corporations can manage to keep all the customers happy, but it sadly tends to be rare.

To be fair the U.S. led the way in RPGs at the outset. Also I think that Ian Livingstone that was doing most of the selling was more of a game designer than salesman and also he didn't design D&D, GW were luck to have landed exclusive UK distribution rights for D&D during the early days.
@gmscott9319

It took so long to take off because it took so long for the kids that used to play to grow up into adults that controlled what is seen and heard on TV and Movies.
@colbyboucher6391
@colbyboucher6391 Год назад
TBH that's partially because TSR hardly knew what it was. Apparently there were discussions among GMs at the time where they expressed frustration at some players choosing to not solve a puzzle because their character's intelligence was too low. Some GMs felt they weren't playing the game propely, not quite getting that their players had realized the real power of RPGs before they had. (I like that old-school puzzle dungeon, psuedo board game style of play too. But it took a long time for nerds to universally realize how much more they could do with it.) Gygax and friends had their tournament dungeons and open tables where they might have six parties running around (in different sessions), all rushing through the world to get as much loot as possible and potentially yank it from each other (hence castle and dungeon building rules). Meanwhile some more isolated groups played... more like people play now. There was a ton of variety in how people interpreted what D&D "was".

That red box of basic dungeons and dragons right at the start. I had that. Now I still prefer basic to all later incarnations - no need for ridiculously long lists of special powers - if you want to do anything fancy just let the DM make up the criteria, then roll and hope the dice are on your side.

@OriginalOldhammerArtwork

When they referred to a board I think they meant in the traditional sense. Games like monopoly, chess and, snakes and ladders which have a constant design. I'd argue they are playing a tiles and not a board. Boards and tiles and not a prerequisite to play D&D but they do make it easier for understanding positions. It also makes it more interesting for the TV programme I hope that helps lol

Same, we didn't have access to the internet until the mid/late 2000's in Bermuda. And even then it was so expensive that it wasn't used that much. So I got to spent my teens and early 20s without that influence

Curious,.... at the begining they said that D&D is played WITHOUT a board or figures, and then, they start playing WITH board and miniatures... It would be hard to "sell" a game in TV without anything to see, I guess
@OriginalOldhammerArtwork
@OriginalOldhammerArtwork 3 года назад
When they referred to a board I think they meant in the traditional sense. Games like monopoly, chess and, snakes and ladders which have a constant design. I'd argue they are playing a tiles and not a board. Boards and tiles and not a prerequisite to play D&D but they do make it easier for understanding positions. I hope that helps lol Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment its greatly appricated :)

@@OriginalOldhammerArtwork it' understandable, they are in a miniature shop and it's better for a TV show to have something to show ;)

Long times that are now gone, but it was so naive and fun that made it true magic. I hope to see players eager to see some kind of content back and be able to go back to dreams and enjoy the hobby, instead of seeing it as just pure "consumer" entertainment as it is now, and maybe we'll be able to get again some quality in terms of fantasy lore (and leave politics , and shallow marketing maneuvers, where they are supposed to be left, in the toilet).
