this game is so underrated i had a lot of fun in this game the story isnt that good tho but the gameplay is decent and the graphics are very good and u will have a lot of fun with this game 100%
This game is absolutely amazing. The only reason it got a bad review is because it's not like other XCOM games. In my opinion it's an absolutely outstanding adaptation into a 3rd person shooter.
For someone new to the xcom universe, but a huge fan of tactical shooters, science fiction and games set in the past I'm really enjoying the game. And will defiantly check out the previous titles.
It sounds like a lot of the issues stated can easily be fixed with ease, especially with modding (if there is any to be allowed) If the devs want this game to shine, they just need to change a few things, and maybe add some things too. The game sounds good and solid, it just needs tweaking and polish.
I enjoyed the game. I liked the combat, and never found the AI to be annoying or walking into mines or gunfire. They got behind cover and stayed there for the better part of the battle. The graphics are pretty damn good, with the models and just about everything striking the 1960s Cold War feel very well, especially the aliens. There were reports of alien abductions around the 60s and the aliens look pretty much identical to what the victim described. The main issue I have with the game though is the lack of dialog. Once I chose all the conversation pieces on the right stick wheel, I didn't really know what to do, especially if I felt enough information wasn't gathered about my current/next mission. No tension or anything about the squad members bleeding out, as it did not happen to me once. Though it is a nice feel that they become canon once they've bled to death. Checkpoint restart fixed everything when I struggled, which only really happened about three times when I was invading the Outsider homeworld. After I finished the game, I sort of felt like I actually accomplished something. Is that sad? Maybe. Sorry for my long ass review, but I just thought I'd add my two cents. Personally, I think the game didn't deserve the mixed reviews it got. Some publications gave it 4.5/10 and others gave it 7/10. Me, I give it about an 8.1/10. Not sure why the game got so much hate when it was actually really enjoyable.
Me this is one of my favorites and it Special to me for being the First xcom game i ever owed and i loved It when playing Its combat reminded me of GoW and i love that kind of gameplay so yea good game i did have a few Bug Here and there but It not to big i say its should have a 8/10 😃
All the problems he mentioned can be solved by actually using some tactics and strategy. in fact; even on the hardest difficulty it was still too easy except for the final battle. I loved this game so much that i was sad when it ended.
I like how they say that reloading a save is the more appealing option for this game than continuing with one less squad-mate. do they realize you can save and load in the other x-com games for maximum cheese too?
I usually trust Gamespot's reviews but I'm gonna call bullshit on that 6. This game looks fun as hell with the combat similar to Mass Effect, I'm getting this and I guarantee I'll like it
That's because you're meant to control them, not them doing all the work for you. Played through the game 2 times and had absolutely 0 problems with squad AI. Granted, I always was the one to control them and issue orders, not just randomly point them towards the enemy. It's 3rd person tactical shooter for a fucking reason.
The game isn't really that bad. It's not perfect, but seriously its fun and the tactical wheel thing really is awesome and helps make the game feel more than a run and gun shooter. I guess that's the problem as a lot of people are either treating it as a sequel to enemy unknown or as a run and gun shooter, to which the game is neither.
I bought this for £1 the other day , I'm on the last mission and by the looks of it I'm the only person who likes it lol I think it's a good game especially for £1 lol
I had no idea the game was going to be like this. I avoided it because I thought they were giving x-com the call of duty treatment--new graphics, same game. This looks more like it was done in the spirit of knights of the old republic/dragons age, etc. I'll have to check it out.
As far as I know Ducktales got very mixed reviews, so it isn't always Gamespot you know, maybe you should check more sources before thinking that GS, are the only ones doing it. And this seems like an quite well made review.
I love this game.I always liked cover shooters like gears and special force team x. I never played any other xcom game btw.This game is fun for its micro managing in the middle of battle,using your team mates to the fullest to win firefights.I play this on the hardest difficulty and you won't win just but charging in balls-a-blazing. It's just a perfect blend of strategy and third person shooter.
"This game is like Mass Effect but without the RPG elements." Take away the RPG elements from Mass Effect and it is just like any other third person shooter. Also, you shouldn't hate the game just because it isn't like the other XCOM games.
Seems up my alley, regardless. Reminds me a lot of Xcom and Mass Effect being mashed together, which I have no problem with. As long as they continue doing the Enemy Unknown style games as well. I'll pick it up if for anything other than to support the Xcom series.
if u like XCOM and Gears of War, buy this game, it's a strong combination of the both. Or more accurately if u like XCOM universe with Mass Effect combat, buy this game.
Okay the fact that they showed him talking to an alien kind of ruins the plot a little, but this game reminds me of mass effect and I like the 50's style so Ill check it out.
Umm they do know that Xcom Enemy Unknown and Xcom The Bureau are two different games right?Plus the Bureau has been in development way longer than Enemy Unknown.
I got this game for £2 last year in the Steam Sales knowing that it was above average. I got it because I bought the main X-COM game and liked the idea of this spin off prequel set in the 60's. The combat is great and spot on and you do have to manage your squad mates to get best results but it's not that bad, it's not that great either but I am enjoying it all the same. I waited to play this alongside the real X-COM game and it was a nice diversion in between and well worth £2 if you like the idea of taking on aliens in 60's America. The NVIDIA PhysX are also a nice touch that helps presentation. So worth £2 if you are into the story of alien invasion but if you don't really care about the story then it's not worth it as there is lots of 9 out of 10 games for £2 in the Steam Sales so most people are always going to pick the high scoring games in Steam sales
The game is bad because it forces you to slow down and think about your tactics, its a tactical 3rd person shooter, I certainly did not expect that o_O
Maybe if everyone stopped comparing it to the other game it would be good. I played it, the story wasn't the best bit the game was very enjoyable. I don't see people comparing uncharted series, or even comparing mass effect 3 to 1. Hell, you don't even see people comparing the new metal gear solid game. Get over it, enjoy the game for what it is and not for what it was

the 2010 XCOM would've had a good story, seeing how the aliens are fresh and new. i mean, its difficult to make a good and new story with recycled enemies whose reasons for invading is already known.
Just started playing this game amd it's really not that bad at all. Just play on a higher difficulty, use the features given to you, (play on a decent PC to enjoy all the added visual and physics benefits) and involve yourself in the story. I LOVE Enemy Unknown, but it was my first XCOM game, so I didn't come into this game with a fanboy chip on my shoulder. Look at it as a spin off with XCOM lore and some mechanics. Not as a continuation of the actual XCOM games.
Based on what i have seen other people say about it is that they seem to think that its not true to xcom (even though its a reboot from what i have heard) So im gonna get it and look at it in a neutral way :)
Both IGN and Gamespot dropped the ball because both reviewers make no sense. IGN praised combat but got mad at story continuity and Gamespot doesn't get the combat but like the story and setting? Hopefully GT doesn't fumble like these guys

So far I am enjoying the game. Sure its not a Game of the Year - but it is not that bad. You need to use more strategy than most 3rd person shooters. In most 3rd person shooters your partners are just there - but in this game it could be death and it is permanent. The retro look does it good. I will agree - I wish there was an ironman mode and no reload checkpoint. However, on the hardest difficulty i need to use all my squad to take down anything but sectoids.
Well you can thank the people who whine and compare every first person shooter to Call of Duty. It caused such an uproar and negative feedback from people that they scrapped it all together and redid the game.
It's not a bad point, you're right. In my time with the game, I felt that the combat was done very well, even though balancing was occasionally way off. The story, however, was definitely a stumbling point, and certain technical errors on that front made it hard for me to enjoy any time spent off the battlefield.
Not a terrible idea...but clearly terrible execution. Take the combat and mission ideas from enemy unknown. 1 the squad [multiplayer?] 2 destructible environments 3 classes, ranks upgrades etc Already right there you got a cod/battlefield/halo/gears competitor. [basically] And I haven't even got to all the games gimmicks, toys and features yet. When ya think about it, it's hard to imagine how they fucked this up, there is like 3 games worth of stuff in X-com to borrow from easily.
The game should have been a mix between Xcom Enemy unknown and this . I like the universe like a prequel to enemy unknown. Still it would have been cool to have Secondary mission. And manage the bureau between mission. If you played a little like MGS Peace Walker. I think it would have been Great.
Love the art style, but while I would happily buy a game was a flawed, noble attempt, - when then have not even gotten their own lore right, there is no point in playing. XCOM isn't just about the tactical options & risks. Its about the unfolding plot. To say this game isn't finished is an understatement. They got hollow, flawed gameplay without a workable story. Not even going to buy it for $15 on steam right now.
I wouldn't say it's an abomination, as it's fun to see the game from a 3rd Person perspective, but they really did just copy/paste the entire plot of the Enemy Unknown game. I would say I'm getting close to the end of the game and I'm satisfied, but disappointed at the same time.

The part when he said that everytime you lose a squadmate in XCOM:Enemy Unknown you carry on, hoping to win;while in The Bureau you save scum is bullshit. I save scumed like a motherfucker in Enemy Unknown. My guess is that they got mad with the difficulty, or they just don't know how to properly score a game. Yup Rainbow Six Was Great : ) Good Idea but you need more than that, more like chose from a list a soldier. With Different ability secondary quest all over the world. Choose between different armors, weapon for u and teammate. Make you squad suit your needs. They also could Simply do a Huge X-com Game with both game play. You can play as turn based Tactical game, or real time Action Squad based game. Kind of like Dragon Age do let you choose.

I am playing it right now and my teammates dont die, I play the game like this dipshit should have, succeeded and give the game a review it deserves. 7/10 lacking only in polish, and polish alone. controls could be tighter but aren't causing deaths, and story/character development is not bad

Thing is, IGN is rigged. If someone dosen't give em money they'll find the most absurd reason to drop a game's score down below what the game deserves. I wouldn't be surprised if Gamespot does the same thing.

I think the problem isn't the game but the name if it was called (insert name not related to Xcom here) then it would have done fine its just that people don't like when you mess with something they love while its understandable its also the same reason activision pumps out the same cut and pasted shooter every year because people are so set in their ways they don't want that to change and it is hurting the industry cause developers are to scared to innovate because they know fans will flip out
They tried with XCOM Alliance, but Microprose got bought out before it was finished, so the game was scrapped. You can still find the old trailer for it.
How so? ashamed to say it but I haven't really had chance to play that yet. I assume ya talking about how you manage the base and resources between missions I actually think something more stripped down and streamlined could work or maybe just on a micro level instead of the massive. Ya could do X-com like rainbow six or ghost recon, the focus on a squad and it's specialized and personnal-ized toys. [fun] Like I said I just like the idea of playing a action game version of my favourite veteran.

Man the idea of actually playing as 1 of my super awesome veterans outfitted with ghost armour and grappling hooking around and using my psi powers etc yeah I could go for some of that. Hell a duck and cover action game with a character who can jump through windows or climb drain pipes would be nice. This game doesn't even seem to have any of those cool laser or plasma guns that vaporize walls. Titan armour? jet packs? destructible environments? shit man anything cool actually from X-com ?
You make no sense, 1. Where do you see PC gamers aren't happy? This game is also on the console. 2. What does this have to do with the pc gamer and saying that we are the master race? The only thing i ever see is console fanboys (they are different from console GAMERS) who think their own system is the best and will burn everyone who has another opinion about it. 3. People burned this game from the start as it had nothing to do with xcom's orriginal games, it was made into another shooter.
I would have chucked in some interceptors [x wing or hawks] gameplay in this, maybe some moonraker vintage astronaut action on the moon or something ya know for variety and the lols. Ironically I preferred the not so original X files black goo / 2001 monolith aliens rather than the classic X-com enemies. This game kinda reminds me of like mars attacks and visually feels like it should be all tongue in cheek wink at the camera comedy satire instead of a stupid serious story. that just me?
A subpar game that tries to appeal to more wider audience by making the game much more action oriented than it should be? Now where have I seen this before? Seriously though, not saying this is a bad game, but devs should just stop with games like this unless they're actually going to be doing the series justice, I'm not opposed to third person or fps XCOM as long as it's done really good.
This game didn't really seem like 2K's style. The gameplay looks pretty stiff and it doesn't look that good. I prefer enemy unknown over Bureau anyday.
The metacritic score (metacritic is an average of all official critic scores. In case you didn't know) of the game is 63 (6.3) out of 100 (10). It will most likely change (for better or for worse) because these are the first scores and more critic scores will come in later. However, Gamespot and IGN must have some reasoning behind what they are saying since everybody else is having issues with the game as well. Maybe the same issues. Still thou, It's a shame that this game was a disappointment.
