I do this kind of thing with my thinkpads, too; usually the issue with the brightness is that the manufacturer sets a whitelist for the type of display that you can use. If it doesn't match that list, windows won't let you adjust the brightness. Works fine in other OS's (I run linux, never had an issue). Figured I'd post this for other people considering this kind of mod. Well worth it for the money, just make sure and do your research for panels and manufacturers for your particular machine. Not all panels are created equal and there are a lot of enthusiasts that keep up on this stuff. There are great deals to be had out there, though! Upgraded my little t440s to a 1080 panel for like 40 bucks.

Also you can use Linux to mod the bios so you can whitelist other hardware to. I have a t430 and flashed the bios for an aftermarket battery. Also link for screen?

you forgot to remove the battery first! 90% of laptops continue to supply the battery/adapter voltage to the backlight circuit even when the computer is powered off, therefore LCD connector is not supposed to be disconnected or connected when there is live voltage on it, there is a risk of shorting out and damaging both the motherboard, and/or LCD when doing it, because the connector of that type does not guarantee that all of its pins will be aligned properly until inserted _fully_ (!).

yes it can do a lot of damage, i fried my laptop's lcd controller because i forgot the battery connected, after that the laptop wouldn't show anything on the screen anymore.

@Linus if you actually go to Device Manager and select the display -> Generic PnP Monitor -> Driver -> Update Driver -> Browse my computer (manual) -> Let me pick from a list -> Select Generic PnP monitor driver and install. Your controls of the screen will most likely work again (brightness, etc.), I've had the same issue after changing my laptop's screen, also this sometimes happens after upgrading Windows version for some reason, but the fix is quite easy. Hope you can use this tip.

Hey bro... I wonder if I can do the same to my MSI laptop? I have GL63 with 60Hz but there are another version with 120Hz available. Is it possible for me to just replace it easily and like this? I texted MSI but they just say no, you can’t... perhaps they don’t want me to disturb their laptop original state I guess? So what do you think? Is it doable for my laptop?

@@mikeyj125 Yes, I actually managed to successfully upgraded my TN 60Hz to IPS 120Hz. It was easy. Just plug n play. You just need to make sure efore you buy the display, it is checked and has no dead pixels. That's it. Though in your case, you better research about whether or not your laptop and the 144Hz version has the same pin connector. Though safe to say, you can get a 120Hz display off Amazon and it'll fit in perfectly. No settings or tweaks required, everything works like a charm. I can't say the same for 144Hz because I didn't research that far back then cause my model only has 120Hz max. But the nagain, you don't really need 144Hz for gaming. Those 22Hz are only extras that you won't really notice. Unless you running a game with low settings expect to reach 144+ FPS.

It's possible to fix it in the bios by whitelisting the panel. But it doesn't work for every panel, the easiest way to check is by looking it up on forums. Or buying exactly the same panel

Welcome to 2021 where we now have 4k/120hz laptop screens and 30 series GPUs! I was able to pop in a 4k 120hz 15.6 panel and got it running! Amazingly, Nvidia support this with their driver now, finally.

I upgraded my dell latitude from a 1280x720 screen with less than an awesome viewing angle to a full hd screen, it was the best thing I ever did to it. Awesome video showing this option.

Brightness adjustment almost always stop working when swapping panels, unless they're really really similar. There's however software tools to simulate the controls via keyboard shortcuts, like ctrl + arrow keys etc. Works pretty well.

@@Jim22150 usually no. For some reason my panel only works with a specific range of Nvidia drivers tho, or the backlight won't turn on at all. Im guessing it's got something to do with the ID of the panel not being in the drivers. Someone with a EDID flasher could try changing the ID to that of the old panel, I just haven't gotten around to playing with it yet as all my games work with the driver atm.

@RectalDiscourse to be fair it really depends on what you want to get out of the games you play. when I play csgo I play in stretched 4:3 1600x900 because I don't care what the game looks like as long as I get my dopamine from frags. When I play the witcher I like to sit and enjoy the landscapes between fights. I don't need to prove I'm better than anyone else so having every possible performance edge isn't of my concern. But the people who speedrun the witcher certainly don't have time for no landscapes and probably don't care about the extra pixels a 4k screen would provide. If I had to choose between a 240hz 720p monitor and 8k 60hz, I'd probably go 720p. I mean netflix can't even play above 720p on chrome anyway so it's not like my media consumption experience would suffer lol.

I've done this upgrade method too on a laptop. The tool he used is really good to exceed limits on panels and try doing some OC on the panel but it's easy easier to change the displays refresh rate. You don't use Intels built in manager, it's horrible. Go into Windows Settings, Click System and inside Display go down to Advance Display Settings. It will then show you your panel. Click the Display Adapter Properties link and it will open up the displays information. If you have multiples screens with newer builds of windows 10 you need to select the display you want from the drop down panel. Go to the Monitor tab and change the screens refresh rate and hit apply. For the brightness issue, a lot of the times you just need to uninstall the Monitor drivers, it may come up as a actual panel name or just be called Generic PnP Monitor under Device Manager. This can also resolve not seeing the right refresh rate in the advance display properties too. The only time this tool needs to be used is if for some strange reason Windows isn't detecting the hz correctly or it's not communicating the support range right and you get the issue like Linus does. I hope this helps!!!

Always remove the battery first (or completely discharge it). When buying another panel to upgrade, make sure you've got the amount of pins right, the position of the connector, the size (ofc) and make sure you have a bit of knowledge about the kind of screen you're buying (TN, IPS, MVA etc.).

I replaced cheep TN for nice wide gamut IPS some time ago without any problems. I was shocked how easy it was. If you are going to do it, remember to make sure you are ordering correct panel. Seller often sells cheap ones as replacements, and don’t clearly mention that. I don’t know why, but it,s really popular in this market.

I did something like this on my Lenovo L440. I changed the screen from a 14" 1900x600 to 1920x1080. Both my panels were still 60Hz tho. My brightness buttons worked though so maybe u need to reinstall drivers or something.

Yes u can, but most people buy laptops to use them for the best part, caryying them. and how the fuck are u gonna just pop into your local starbucks with an extra monitor.

That's some pretty convenient timing. Within the last month or so, I've been looking in to replacing the monitor in my Dell G3 to a 1080p120Hz display.

FemiFTW yes, it was worth it. I play all my games on ultra settings with no issues. The only game that gives it a little stutter is xplane 11 with ultra settings, but it’s because it has had textures and add ons to run to. I also create content and the render times have been cut in half for me. Only downside is the m.2 ssd is too small, so I added a 512 ssd in the empty bay it had. And the absolute worst thing are the speakers. They really suck.

Flash Hobbies alright, thanks for the information, in probably going to be using headphones anyway, and playing on medium setting won’t be a problem for me, (I’m coming from mobile gaming)

I have the older helios and for some reason i have frame rate drops below 20 and then it comes back to the higher frame rate, even thou i updated my nvidia drivers, does someone has the ame issue?

There is an acer predator helios 300 with a 144hz screen btw its the PH315-51-78NP

whats the model number on the helios 300? I upgraded my G3-571-77QK with a 120hz screen but 144hz would be awesome! screen model number would be helpful too!
