An updated version of this video is available here: • Gamma Knife Perfexion ...
Gamma Knife radiosurgery at Penn Medicine is one of the most precise, powerful, and proven treatments for brain disorders. It's a preferred treatment for benign or malignant brain tumors, blood vessel malformations, skull base tumors, and dysfunctions such as trigeminal neuralgia -- a painful condition of the facial nerves.
The Gamma Knife at Penn Medicine is a highly advanced machine that delivers a powerful dose of radiation to a precise target in the brain. Patients experience little or no discomfort during the procedure, usually go home the same day, and are generally able to resume normal activities almost immediately. Gamma Knife radiosurgery offers many other advantages over traditional brain surgery.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
The Gamma Knife at Penn Medicine delivers 201 beams of extremely focused radiation to a precise target in the brain. Individually, the beams are too weak to damage healthy tissue. Together, they converge to deliver powerful treatment to a single point.
To establish the target for the radiation, a team of physicians creates detailed maps of the brain using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), or angiography imaging. They then determine the precise amount of radiation needed to treat the disease.
The radiation doesn't remove the diseased tissue; rather, it damages the individual abnormal cells. Brain tumor cells lose their ability to multiply and blood vessel malformations close off, and they eventually stop growing and start to shrink.

Getting the frame attached is the worst part.. It is actually SCREWED into your head. Its a crushing pain.....that lasts for maybe a minute.....then just very wierdly goes away--- and then no more pain. I'd say it feels like a very very tight metal hat, Then - its like nothing is there at all. my Trigeminal Neuralgia is in remission since this surgery ► 9 years ago !!~ after nothing else worked.! TY Gamma Knife !!

a s m sayem I was pain free for 1 1/2 yrs and now it’s back again. I’m doing the Gamma Knife again because it is the least invasive and painless treatment. It’s worth a try for you if you have this. They can do it 2 times and then you have to try something else. Good luck if you choose this.

@roseism Radiosurgery usually refers to a single fraction treatment. Radiotherapy refers to multiple fraction treatments. Gamma Knife is a precise, powerful stereotactic radiation treatment utilizing fixation with a titanium frame to generate the coordinates of exact location requiring treatment. Radiotherapy is usually IMRT or external beam radiation. The radiosurgery treatment is individualized based on patients' diagnosis & treatment plans so the amount of time in the treatment room varies.

Great question! Gamma Knife is actually a safe and highly precise form of radiation therapy. At Penn Medicine, we have a multidisciplinary team of experts that work together to provide optimal treatment and follow-up care for each patient. You can schedule an appointment to speak to a Penn Medicine representative to see if you're an appropriate candidate for Gamma Knife on our website or by calling 800-789-PENN (7366).

I was terrified to have the titanium frame screwed into my skull. Of course it didn't feel good but it also was not nearly as bad as I had imagined it may be. I personally thought it felt worse when it was unscrewed. My head felt like it was about to explode. A lot of pressure. Didn't do a thing for my ATN but took my TN pain away by a good 90%. Although I ended up with ON after the procedure, it was still very much worth it. Very happy with results. Bilateral GKR on 12/28/10 -OSU Medical -Ohio

@@anikomazan8871 I was worried about that too but after a minute or two you kind of settling to it and it's actually pretty relaxing. My gamma knife experience they had running water, incense and nice relaxing music, that part of it was actually relaxing and it was an hour and 7 minutes, I was also a little concerned about being claustrophobic but it was fine, there's also a speaker and a microphone if you ever need or want to talk to the technician during treatment.

I had gamma knife surgery in June (2014) and it is now August. I have had zero relief, in fact the facial pain has gotten worse. It began just at my cheekbone but now goes from my upper lip, behind my eyeball and on up to my forehead. My surgeon wants to do it again, but my thinking is if it didn't work the first time, why would it work the second time? Looking for some advice.

Doctors/Hospitals who offers Gamma knife and not cyberknife don't tell the patients anything about cyberknife. Since they do not have the cyberknife machine which works better and most importantly, it is non invasive. If you are considering gamma knife, my advise is to at least look up for cyberknife.

I have found out I have an AVM of 12mm in my brain deep enough that my Neurosurgeon cannot operate. It is right behind my right eye near the Galen vein and the Neurosurgeon said if he operates I might have half my body paralysed (left side). So he recommended this procedure but I am terrorised to do it...he said I have time but I must do it before getting pregnant if I plan on having children...But I read I might have neurological issues after the procedure as it might damage some parts of my brain around the lesion during the process...that head frame thing is also scaring me too... 😔

I had my gamma knife procedure October 9th 2023 they screw four pints into your head, the first give you four shots of a numbing agent, then two doctors tighten the screws simultaneously. I would say the procedure lasted between 5 and 7 minutes. The pain was bearable, for some reason one of the screws they had to keep tightening which lasted an additional minute, that part was rough and made tremble. But the good part was the pain quickly went away and the frame was just uncomfortable. Also they gave me a medication to help me relax, which I believe is standard practice and helped a lot. Overall I would have to say the experience was not terrible and I'm sure it's nothing like recovering from actual brain surgery. So if you have to have this done I would recommend going in with a positive and grateful attitude, and remember that this day will pass pretty fast.
