Such an amazing quote on it's own, but awe striking when put into the context of the rest of Tolkien's quotes. A quote that was exempted from the movies that Gandalf also stated, “Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement.” This was in reference to Frodo stating that Gollum deserved to die. Remember that in the end, it was Gollum that made the ring fall into Mt. Doom. When you put these quotes together, you get the moral that you only have to simply rely on the fact that evil is self-destructing, and that good people only need to reach that point by doing what good they can do along the way. Add on top of that the quote about how it takes courage to spare a life rather than take one, and you have quite the lesson.

´True wisdom is not when to take a life, but when to spare a life, very true at the scene with faramir, where frodo could have killed gollum, but spared him, wich was crucial, since in the end it was gollum that destroyed the ring, and not frodo, frodo failed the test, and without gollum the ring wouldnt been destroyed.

​@@ElchupanibresAnd of course with the scene in the goblin tunnel between Bilbo and Gollum. When Bilbo was wearing the ring and was escaping, he could've easily killed Gollum but in that moment he pitied him.

And this is connected to the lines before- gandalf is afraid from evil and he knows great power won't be able to protect from it. Bilbo gives gandalf courage because he is loving and kind, hence representing the ability to keep evil at bay.

Now that I think about this... this friendship between Gandalf and Bilbo... Gandalf's fondness for Hobbits... I wonder if that served as the inspiration for Fizban's fondness of Tasslehoff Burfoot in the Dragon Lance Series...

I always thought that bilbos ability to go foward without any desire for power or glory, or that being him brave makes gandalf remind himself that if there is someone who has the right to be afraid it's bilbo. Bilbo has had chances to turn back, yet he never did.

it is even deeper. Before Gandalf departed to Middle-Earth, he was afraid of Sauron. Manwe, the Leader of the Maiar, comforted him in much the same way.

The more powerful the more susceptible to corruption… that’s why the least powerful race, hobbits could resist the one ring significantly more than any other race.

Gandalf is actually one of Illuvitar’s agents (he alluded to this when he states his identity to the balrog on the bridge of Khazad Dum) who came to middle earth taking the form of an old man. He takes this form so that the men of power who he wished to council would not find him threatening.
