Many years later to this tutorial, but I'm going to use it for my Renna the Witch (Elden Ring) cosplay! It falls perfectly and I just have to make the hat on a larger scale! very excited :)
Everyone watching who didn't make it: Thank you this is perfect!! People ACTUALLY making this: OMG I messed up due to unclear directions and unspoken seam allowances. DAMMIT. $40 down the drain.
Can't thank you enough for this tutorial! It worked so well and I was at a complete loss before watching this...especially for the brim shape that I wanted. With a couple mods for tip shape I was able to make a perfect hat! Great tutorial!
Amazing tutorial. I just finished my own hat today, and I couldn't have done it on my own without this video. Thanks a ton for making it, My costume was saved!
Thanks to you I am now rocking a sweet Gandalf hat made with an old moving blanket that happened to be the exact color I needed. Plus, it's already stuffed :D Thank you!
One thing that would work as an upgrade to the design is to take a wire and make a loop around the exterior of the brim, just making sure to close up the meeting point for the wire and you get a brim that can be adjusted as you want it to. You could also use one rather than stitching inside the cone to create the bend and make it possible to change as you want there
Great tutorial, thanks! But to find the radius of a circumference you need to divide it by 2π, if you just divide by 4 (or twice by 2 as per your instructions) you are going to get a REALLY big circle, more than you can overlap to get the brim right.
I really wish I had seen this video last week, would have saved me so much stress on that cone part. I'll try to use it for my hat thank you for such an easy video the math makes sense now.
You sound exactly like I imagined Fleur Delacour would sound in Harry Potter, and you make this process look really fun! That makes a good combination lol I can't wait to try this in a couple months x)
I’m in search of good videos on a complete Gandalf costume and here I find your video about the hat . Ten years later . Impressive. I’m sure your studying is over by now. Did you go back to sewing and crafting ?
Hello. Great video and very nice work! I'm struggling to get my hat finished today, but I have a problem. I understood the pattern instructions fine, but when I try to pin the brim to the cone before sewing, the problems begin. It is very hard to work with the two fused pieces, but I get the idea. Unfortunately, no matter how carefully I go, but the time I get it pinned all the way around, I run out of cone fabric and I have extra brim left. I just loose too much of the cone due to tiny gathers going around the curve. So my only option would be to cut off the excess brim (making the hat too small) or cut a new cone with a much larger measurement. Most likely this is a flaw in my technique, but I can't get the two pieces to line up as nicely has you have in your video (could have used shot of the actual sewing as well, since that is challenging on this piece). Thanks!
Sean Kelly Hi, first I would check that the inner brim and the curve on the cone match, then if it does, you can stretch the two pieces to fit each other and make sure you use a lot of pins. These two pieces are not easy to match up =D Let me know if you have any other problem with it and I would love to see a picture =D
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Quick question, how many yards of fabric did you buy for this project? Or more specifically, how do you determine how much you're going to need. I'm not an avid seamstress, but your tutorial is so clear I think I'll be able to make the hat, I'm just having trouble with the supply shopping.
Hi. Awesome vid. I just don't have these skills :( I can fix a car, computer any electrical thing... could I commission you to taylor, make, fabricate one of these for me.. thanks James...
I want to do this to finalise my Gandalf the Grey costume...So, today I brought two or yards two metres of Grey felt. Which right now seems a little too light for the body of a large floppy wide brimmed wizard's hat, so I might order some heavier.I also brought some coils of thick metal wire. Otherwise called armatures. I have about four of these each and they should enough to help shape the cone into a banana type shape that I noticed with every picture I have seen of his hat.I already tried this with the cheap version of the official replica of the hat. Which I found to be too small to stay on my head without forcing it down over my noggin and with a badly shaped cone on top that never satisfied me. also wanted a wider brim. As wire, I did use a spare coat hanger made from wire cover in that coloured lanolin and it almost worked when I tore the stitching on the inside of it where my head goes and shoved the wire inside where I had already fashioned it in a loop to fit over my head and curved arm to influence the shape of the cone more. It only stood taller and the wired kept falling out due my in experience with sowing. Overall, I just wanted another hat that looked closer to what I had seen in the film or any of the official art work I have also seen. I had already wore what might have been considered okay to the casual observer..... scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfa1/t31.0-8/10917940_1512443969035438_7577232244928573289_o.jpgscontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/t31.0-8/10917940_1512442005702301_6977884827851167466_o.jpg Wasn't happy with the large grey nightshirt I was sent when I brought this on Ebay.... www.ebay.com.au/itm/Adults-Mens-44-Gandalf-The-Grey-Lord-Of-The-Rings-Wizard-Fancy-Dress-Costume-/400861167307?hash=item5d552ffecb:g:HBsAAOSwwbdWHZ0g More like a dress, hardly very practical for wizard that can pull off all those martial artist moves that Ian Mac Kellan did in the films I had these dumb looking but every cheap grey ugg boots for foot wear that I kept stepping out of and this small pouch that was not made to hold my wallet and card holder. Lost one of those completely when I wore this get up to the premier of the thirds Hobbit film in my home town nearly two year earlier. So, I'm upgrading costume for convention later this year.Yet, going back to today......I also brought a spool of dark grey thread. and sewing kit that had more threads of every colour except what I wanted, bobby pins, sewing needles, a thimble, a pin cushion and some scissors and I think there is also measuring tape as well. I really need my own seamstress, but will try to wing it and just go by what I know of looping thread over and over to attach what I need. I have some vague knowledge of macramé that I was shown by my mother when I was a lot younger. I also remember how to fold over / cross stitch two different coloured paper streamers for what would pass for Xmas decorations when that stuff still mattered. That's all the know about that sort of thing. And some cardboard, a large sheet of it. It's heavy duty stuff, that may be good to give the brim some hold. Of course, I am not making mine the same as yours and would like some advice about what I have chosen and about the fusing you have used. I not sure what you meant by that.
+vidstarr Your costume on the first picute look great =D If your felt fabric is a bit light, you can apply a coat of pva glue once it s completed, it will make it stiffer so no need to buy more fabric. As for the tunic, you re right it looks a bit like a night dress but when your costume is all on it s not really noticeable. You could diy it to make it a bit more real.As for the fusing, go to a fabric or craft store and tell them about your project and what you intend to do, they should help you. That's what I do when I am a bit unsure of what to do or buy, they usually know their stuff. I hope that helps =D
+CraftGyver I have two yards of blue-grey felt that looks the right colour of how his hat was described in the book. Yet, might need another too yards to conceal the fusing I intend to support it with. Otherwise, it's going to look out of place. So, I either intend to buy another two yards of the same coloured felt when more of my money comes through from a refund or I could use the two yards of grey felt I brought in the first place and dye that with blue bye. yet, I don't have any of that write now, but fear that a blue grey hat with grey lining would also look out of place. I have also ordered a grey type of trench coat that is made for women, but can you tell here? Without buttons and other modern contrivances attached, it does seem kind of old world to me. I like and the only thing that bothers me about this is that it may not be longer enough to loo like a wizard cloak. The main thing is that it's the right colour and made from suede. Just like the pants I have got. Which are certifiably medieval..... The boots will should be arriving later this week... I
when you make the cone for the top of the hat on paper, you said to measure the circle and then divide by two to know where to stop, but what exactly are you measure? circumference of circle or like diameter? sorry i just don't want to mess up :-)
On the cone part the instructions are not clear, when you say measure across for the cone? Do you mean the whole circle or do you mean half. Ive cut my fabric and it has come up short due to this, though i followed your instructions as clear as possible
You need to measure the inner section and divide it by 2, as you’re making pattern and cut your fabric on the fold to get a symmetrical shape. I would suggest making a mock in a cheap fabric for the fitting before you cut your good fabric.
When you make your hole at 9 inches, then make that slit to overlap the other side (to make the slope)... The hole gets smaller and smaller. There's no way to regain that diameter of 9 inches. How do you solve the issue? Make the hole larger??
Thank you for a great, very clear tutorial! This will be very helpful for the Gandalf the Gray costume I'm making for my son. Question: How do you keep the stuffing up in the tip? Do you do anything to secure it?
Amazing looking hat, but I don't really understand what you mean at 2:48, when you say "measure the inside circle" how would we measure a circle after we trimmed some of it off? Then you say "take that number and divide it by 2 and that'll tell you where to stop on the curve". I only know the diameter of the cone, i don't know anything about the curve. Then we can skip ahead to 4:34 where we see a lining for the inside of the hat but it got there or its measurements is never really addressed. Other than that, the hat looks great and I hope that you can clear some of this up so that I too may have a hat like yours.
Hi, how are you? -To know how big the base of your cone will be, you need to measure the inside of you brim pattern, these sides need to match, because they will be sewn together. - To make a symmetrical cone, I put my paper on the fold, that is why I am only using half of the inside curve on the brim pattern measurement, you need to cut through the two layer of you paper to have a full con pattern. - I made a mistake with my editing, I did cut this part off, I am going to fix it ^_^ -The head measurement at the beginning is just a staring point, once my brim pattern is done (trimming and all ), it becomes a reference for the cone pattern. - As for the lining, the cone pattern is used to cut an outer piece and a lining piece. I did put all the necessary information about fabric and what you need to cut in the description box, as I didn't want to overburden the video. Thank you very much for bringing these issues to my attention, I will be able to fix the video ^_^ and I hope I answered all your questions. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask me ^_^ Have a great day, Cynthia.
What if you wanna put a ribbon all around at the brim of the hat? I want my hat to have yellow all around the brim of the hat, but do I stitch it in last?
Nice video, very instructive. :) I'm trying to make a hat like this but I'm having some problems with the brim. What was that white material you sewed in between the layers so it won't go all floppy?
Yeah it is not waterproof, you could try waterproofing spray for shoes or coats, or you could apply some PVa glue on the hat, it might leave some stains and it would make it more rigid =D
